We should not use more water than we actually need. If we do, we will not have enough water in the future.{#blank#}1{#/blank#}It is not a difficult question to answer. If we remove more fresh water than nature replaces, we have taken too much.

    Many cities run campaigns (运动) to get people to stop wasting water. They show them ways they can cut back on water use.{#blank#}2{#/blank#}What's more, they carry out programs that offer money to reduce water use. For example, they give people shower heads and toilets that use less water.{#blank#}3{#/blank#}

    Another threat (威胁) to our water supply is pollution. When our sources of fresh water get polluted, we can no longer use this water. This also endangers (危及) the animals that depend on the water.

    {#blank#}4{#/blank#}We can save lots of water by not letting taps (水龙头) run while we brush our teeth or by turning off taps right after washing hands. By collecting cold water when we're taking warm showers, we can also save water.{#blank#}5{#/blank#}In this way, we can make full use of water.

Holidays are not necessarily for fun or rest. Doing something meaningful can also get special pleasure. When the final bell rang, the 1 were reminded that there was no school on Monday —Labor Day.

Kayla was excited about the news. She loved breaks. She wanted to go out to play with her friends. When the school bus 2 Kayla off, she ran into the house and told her mother happily,"Mom, I am excited about no school on Monday."

Kayla slept in the next morning. Saturday was her 3 day of the week. She could enjoy playing video games all day. On Sunday, her friends came 4 and they played basketball for several hours.

Then it was Labor Day — the extra(额外的) day off that Kayla was looking forward to. But her dad 5 Kayla early that morning. He told Kayla that in honor of Labor Day, the family would be cleaning both inside and outside the house. Kayla couldn't believe it. As Kayla wiped (擦) her eyes, she began to wonder if this was just a bad 6 .

When she sat down at the kitchen table, Kayla asked her parents, "Are you 7 about working today? Isn't Labor Day a holiday?"

"Yes, Kayla. It is,"replied her dad,"but your mom and I thought working hard today would make 8 know why Labor Day was celebrated in the first place."

At first, she was against the plan from the bottom of her heart, but she had no 9 . First, Kayla was arranged(安排) to wash the breakfast dishes. After that, she was asked to give their dog a bath. It was a hard 10 and needed a lot of tiring, careful and patient work. So she slowly got down to the work with great unwillingness(不情愿).

When Tom started talking, he couldn't stop. 

"It was. it was about my sister. She's bigger than me and she always picks on me. And then I broke her MP3 by m{#blank#}1{#/blank#} and she kicked my computer and I hit her with my tennis racket and then my mum saw me and I started r{#blank#}2{#/blank#} I didn't want to stop. I heard them call my name but I didn't look b{#blank#}3{#/blank#}. I was very angry. I didn't want to see them ever again. Never ever. But when I stopped running. I was l{#blank#}4{#/blank#}. I didn't know where I was! "

"And then I walked into the fair …"

"And you found a hole in the wall of the Ghost Train, "Jack said. 

Tom nodded. 

"So did I, "Jack said, smiling.

"And I had a fight with my mum, too! "

Tom tried to smile, but he suddenly looked very s{#blank#}5{#/blank#}.

"Are you cold? "Jack asked. Tom nodded. "Here, "said Jack. He t{#blank#}6{#/blank#} off his jacket and put it over Tom Jack felt really cold now, but he tried not to show it. 

"Do you think your mum and your sister are m {#blank#}7{#/blank#}you? "Jack asked. 

"I don't know, "Tom said.

"Really? "And then Tom l {#blank#}8{#/blank#} down at the floor. Jack though the was going to cry. 

"Well, don't think about it now, Tom. Go to sleep, said Jack

"Thanks, "said Tom

"And don't worry, "said Jack.

Tom gave a little smile and closed his e{#blank#}9{#/blank#}. He didn't wake up until six in the morning. Jack didn't s{#blank#}10{#/blank#} much either. He was busy thinking about his little brother Jim. And he was thinking about his mum and dad. For the first time in his life, he didn't want to be travelling on the road or on the sea or in the air. He wanted to be at home.

Helen Keller was both blind and deaf. 1 she had these disabilities, she became a skilled writer and speaker.

Keller was born on June 27, 1880, in Tuscumbia, Alabama. When she was 19 months old, she became very 2 and the illness left her unable to see or hear.

When Keller was 6, she got a teacher named Anne Sullivan. Sullivan used Keller's sense of 3 to teach her. She handed Keller a doll. Then she traced(摹写) the letters of the word "doll" on Keller's hand. Keller 4 the connection between the letters and the object she was holding. Then she learned that things had names.

With Sullivan's help, Helen made progress 5 . Soon she could 6 sentences by feeling raised words. A few years later she learned Braille(盲文), a special system of writing for the blind that uses raised dots(凸起的原点). People read Braille with their fingers.

Even though learning to speak was a bigger challenge, Keller decided to face it bravely 7 giving up. Keller 8 to do it by touching the lips and throat of a person who was speaking. Then she could feel the way the lips and throat moved. At the same time, someone spelled out the words that were being spoken.

Keller was very 9 and learned quickly. She graduated(毕业) from Radcliffe College in 1904. Then she wrote magazine articles and books that told people about blindness. In 1913, Keller began giving speeches, mainly for the American Foundation for the Blind. Her efforts have a great 10 on the whole world with more and more disabled people being treated nicely and fairly.

In the eighth grade, I had a good friend, Peter. He was an excellent sports star.1 , I never seemed to be any good at sports. But when Peter joined a team, I did, too. Or . at least I 2 .

Peter was in the JV field hockey team. He was talented, so he learned the basic skills 3 . I, on the other hand, couldn't seem to hold the stick comfortably. Then Peter spent more and more4 with the other boys like him andI was beginning to feel lonely.

Deciding to  5 our friendship; I asked my mom to buy me my own hockey stick so I could practise at home. Peter looked at my 6 , and I could tell that he was thinking it was a waste of money.

I was7 by his reaction(反应`, and felt sad. I thought I simply had to be good at this sport8 I was going to keep Peter as a friend. So I practised and practised. I often felt like there was no     9 , but I kept at it. Just during that dark time, Steve became my new partner.

Then, one day,10 happened. That day, when Steve sent me his first throw, l caught 11 . Then I caugnt his next throw, and the next. The stick was actually feeling12 in my hands.

I still don't know what exactly happened that day, but I will always be13 for it. At the end of the season, I was chosen to14 for the JV team. I scored 12 goals that year. My success on the field gave me the confidence and the true 15 that I really needed. And Steve turned out to be a great friend.
