The world's first hydrogen-powered(氢动力) trains have begun running in Germany last month. The new trains will run 100-kilometer trips and can travel up to 140 kilometers an hour.

A French railroad company called Alstom built two hydrogen-powered trains. Teams in Germany and France cooperated on the project, which was supported by the German government. The new train model, called the Coradia iLint, signals the beginning of efforts in Germany and other nations to move away from pollution-producing diesel(柴油) trains.

Compared(与…相比较) with diesel trains, the Coradia iLint is designed to run on non-electrified train lines with low levels of noise. It uses a process that combines hydrogen and oxygen to produce electrical power. If the system produces more energy than the train needs at that time, it can store the extra energy in batteries. The only emissions(排放物)are water and steam.

A single tank of hydrogen can run a Coradia iLint train for about 1,000 kilometers. This is very similar to the distance a diesel-powered train can run on with a single tank.

Hydrogen-powered trains cost more than diesel trains to build. But Alstom officials say the operating costs are much lower. The company plans to provide another 14 Coradia iLint trains by the year 2021. Several other European countries have also expressed interest in developing hydrogen train systems. France has already said it wants its first hydrogen train to be operated by 2022.

(1)、What's the topic of the passage?
A、A new kind of train B、Diesel(柴油) trains C、Water and steam D、A French railroad company
(2)、Compared with diesel trains, what's the advantage of the Coradia iLint?
A、The Coradia iLint uses electrical power. B、The Coradia iLint can store the extra energy in batteries. C、The Coradia iLint is designed to run with low levels of noise. D、All of the above.
(3)、How many Coradia iLint trains in total will the Alstom have by the year 2021?
A、Two B、Fourteen C、Twelve D、Sixteen
(4)、According to the passage, we can infer that __________.
A、Alstom is the name of hydrogen-powered(氢动力) train. B、The project was supported by the French government. C、A diesel-powered train can run about 1,000 kilometers with a single tank. D、Only one European country has interest in developing hydrogen train systems.

A desert is a very dry land where there is hardly any rain. In the day, it can be so hot that you could fry an egg on the ground. But during the night it is sometimes so cold that water would turn into ice.
Many deserts are covered in sand. But some have mountains, rocks, or lakes that have dried up in the heat. The Great American Desert has cliffs(悬崖)that have been made into amazing and beautiful shapes by the wind. The Sahara Desert in Africa is mostly sand. The Australian Desert has red sand.
Sometimes it does not rain for a whole year in the desert. But there is water deep under the ground and some plants have roots that go very deep to find it. Other plants have roots that spread out a long way so they can suck up the rain as soon as it falls. One desert plant is the cactus, which has long, spreading roots. The cactus stores water inside its hard skin. This skin protects it from heat and cold. Camels are a bit like cactus plants! They store water too—inside their bodies. They have special fur which protects them from the sun during the day and keeps them warm at night.
Some other animals live in deserts, too. They have to be very good at seeing and hearing because most of them only come out at night. This is why many desert animals have extra big eyes or ears. A desert fox has bigger ears than a normal fox. A gerbil has huge eyes, so that it can see at night. It stays cool in the day by staying underground, like most desert animals.
Some people live in the desert but they always make their homes near an oasis. An oasis is where water comes from an underground river. Near an oasis, people can grow lots of plants and keep animals.
Life is hard in the desert, for people, animals and plants. But desert people like to live there.

Do you know cosmic radiation(宇宙辐射)? Have you ever seen the auroras ( 极 光 ) in the sky? Cosmic radiation creates these pretty lights in the North and South Pole areas. It seems that cosmic radiation is a beautiful gift from space. But for some people, it can be dangerous.

A 53-year-old flight attendant(空中乘务员) in South Korea, who spent about 1, 022 hours flying each year, passed away due to cancer. His death was thought to be connected to great exposure (暴露) to cosmic radiation. During his lifetime, nearly half of his flights crossed the areas in and around the North Pole, where cosmic radiation is very strong.

Cosmic radiation from space is hitting Earth nonstop, coming from both the sun and other stars in the sky.

____ . Earth's magnetic field (磁场) and atmosphere (大气层) protect us from most cosmic radiation. The magnetic field is the strongest near the equator and the weakest at the poles. People living at higher latitudes (纬度), like in Heilongjiang province, are exposed to a bit more cosmic radiation than those living at lower latitudes, like in Hainan province. Also, when you go higher in an airplane, the thin atmosphere increases exposure to cosmic radiation.

Cosmic radiation can create health risks. However, what makes cosmic radiation dangerous also makes it useful. The high speed and energy of cosmic radiation have provided wonderful ideas for treating some cancer. Scientists can now produce man-made radiation similar to cosmic radiation. Compared to the present ways of treating cancer, it can work better with less harm to healthy parts of the body around them.
