Some people in the West like to stay at home during their weekends. They work in the garden, visit their friends, read books or watch television. Many families take their lunch to a park or some where far from the city. They like to eat under some trees or near a nice lake. If they live near the sea, they often go to the seaside. There they can fish, swim or enjoy the sunshine.

    Some people in the West like travelling. They think travelling and outdoor activities are interesting and exciting. They work hard to save money, but their main purpose is to travel.

    Most Western students often make use of their weekends to camp. There are thousands of interesting camp bases in Western countries. They can swim, go fishing, attend lectures, and take part in many other activities there. It can help them quest for the secrets of nature and teach them how to be self-reliant(自立的).

    On Christmas Eve a few days ago, an English couple, the Hardens, got a very special call. It was only a 20-second call but it was very 1. The Hardens' 15-year-old daughter has gone 2 six months before. On Christmas Eve she rang them. ＂I'm phoning to wish you a happy Christmas,＂ she said, ＂I love you.＂ Ronals and Edwine Harden were so 3 that they started a special telephone service （服务）called ＂Alive and Well＂. The service helps 4 to get in touch with children who have run away from home.

    Young people can phone ＂Alive and Well＂ and leave a message for their parents. The telephones are answered by answering machines. So 5 can speak to the child or make him return home. Parents of runaway children who are 6 eighteen can ask the police to bring their children home. So children do not want to tell their parents where they are. Through ＂Alive and Well＂ they can telephone their parents and they do not 7 about this or give out their addresses.

    The Hardens and their helpers 8 the telephone messages and connect（联系）the addresses given. About 30,000 British teenagers have left home and many of them are probably in 9. For only two pence（便士）they can go into a telephone coin box and call their parents. They can dial 5675339 and 10 a parent worrying: Is he dead or alive?

Barry and Ann are twins(双胞胎), but they like different sports. Barry like soccer. He is in the school soccer club,and he plays soccer every day. He has nine soccer balls in his bookcase. He always likes volleyball. He has two white volleyballs and two blue volleyballs. But Ann doesn't like soccer or volleyball. She likes tennis. Tennis is interesting. She is in the school tennis club and she plays tennis every day. She has  seven tennis balls and two  tennis  rackets in her room. She also likes baseball. She has five baseballs—two green baseballs and three yellow baseballs.

It's 6:00 p. m. Kate's family are having dinner. There is rice, eggs, salads, strawberries and some vegetables like tomatoes, onions and carrots on the table. But Kate doesn't like vegetables. She doesn't want to eat them and puts her bo wl away.

" Kate," says her father.

" Where are my hamburgers?" asks Kate.

" Don't think about them. We need to eat healthily," says Mom.

" How about some ice- cream, then?" asks Kate.

" Kate," Dad calls her name again. He thinks the dinner is nice.

Kate takes a bite(咬一口) of the tomato and quickly spits(吐出) it back into the bowl.

" Kate! Room! Now!" says Dad. He doesn't like her bad eating habits.

Kate runs to her room and cries, but she soon stops. Usually, her parents will get her some other food she likes if she doesn't eat dinner. So she waits.

At about 7:00 p. m., Mom tries to get Kate to eat some vegetables, but she says no.

At 9:00 p. m., Kate wants to eat something, but her parents still don't give her anything to eat.

At 10:00 p. m., Kate goes to the kitchen and sees some vegetables on the table. They don't look so bad. And you know what? They don't taste so bad, either.

Kate learns that she should eat health y food and live a healthy life.

There is an animal in the last drawing, too. Its head is an apple. Its hair is black. It has a long mouth, and it is a banana. Its two legs are carrots. What is it? Lisa says it is a horse, but it doesn't look like a horse at all.
