When I was 12, all I wanted was a signet (图章) ring. They were the "in" thing and it seemed every girl except me had one. On my 13th birthday, my Mum gave me a signet ring with my initials(姓名首字母) carved into it. I was in heaven.
What made it even more special was that it was about the only thing that wasn't being "replaced". We'd been burnt out in fires that swept through our area earlier that year and had lost everything—so most of the " new" stuff (东西) we got was really just to replace what we'd lost. But not my ring. My ring was new.
Then, only one month later, I lost it. I took it off before bed and it was missing in the morning. I was sad and searched everywhere for it. But it seemed to have disappeared. Eventually, I gave up and stopped looking for it. And two years later, we sold the house and moved away.
Years passed, and a couple of moves later, I was visiting my parents' when Mum told me that she had something for me. It wasn't my birthday, nor was it Easter or Christmas or any other gift-giving occasion. Mum noticed my questioning look." You'll recognize this one," she said, smiling.
Then she handed me a small ring box. I took it from her and opened it to find my beautiful signet ring inside. The family who had bought our house 13 years earlier had recently decided to do some redecorations, which included replacing the carpets. When they pulled the carpet up in my old bedroom, they found the ring. As it had my initials carved into it, they realized who owned the ring. They'd had it professionally cleaned up by a jeweler before sending it to my mother. And it still fits me.
That most Americans are falling short of the recommended eight hours of sleep per night is nothing new. Over time, staying awake in the night can come with a high cost. You should stop your night owl (夜猫子) habit.
Compared with people who turn in early, those who go to bed very late are more likely to suffer from repeated negative (消极的) thoughts. The findings suggest that sleep disruption (扰乱) could actually be linked to the development of negative thoughts. Psychologists suggest that focusing on good sleep habits can help.
Have you been getting into a lot of arguments lately? There's one easy way to fix that. Too little sleep tends to leave people feeling bad-tempered and stressed. It means that little things that might not normally be a big deal can cause you to fly off the handle. The result is more misunderstandings with those around you. Being well rested, on the other hand, will help you control your temper and you'll get along better with others.
According to AAA Foundation reports, people who sleep six to seven hours are twice as likely to have a car accident as those who sleep for eight hours or more when driving. People who sleep for five hours or less increase their risk up to fivefold. Go for 24 hours without sleeping, and your skills behind the wheel are the same as someone who is drunk.
Research suggests that the less sleep you get, the more likely you are to be overweight. How so? When you lack sleep, you have less energy to exercise or make healthy food choices. Plus, studies show that the later you stay up, the more you eat. Night owls who stay up until 4 am. eat about 550 more calories than early birds who go to sleep at 10 p.m.
I am a strong believer that if a child is raised with approval, he learns to love himself and will be successful in his own way.
Several weeks ago, I was doing homework with my son in the third grade and he kept standing up from his chair. I kept asking him to sit down, telling him that he should concentrate better. He sat but seconds later, as if he didn't even notice he was doing it, he got up again. I was getting annoyed, but then it hit me: I started noticing his answers were much quicker and right when he stood up. Could he be focused while standing up?
This made me start questioning myself and what I had been raised to believe. I was raised to believe that a quiet child was more likely to succeed. This child would have the discipline to study hard, get good grades and become someone important in life. Kids that were active and loud would not be loved.
Now people perhaps come to realize that their kids are born with their own sets of DNA and personality features, and all they can do is loving and accepting them. As parents, throughout their growing years and beyond that, we need to be our kids' best cheerleaders, guiding them and helping them find their way.
I have stopped asking my son to sit down and concentrate. Obviously, he is concentrating, just in his own way and not mine. We need to accept our kids, and their ways of doing things. This way may have worked for me but doesn't mean we need to carry it through generations. There is nothing sweeter than seeing our children being individual (个人). It makes us happy and that's just the way I want my kids to live life.
A good book can be satisfying. If reading is a habit you'd like to get into, there are some ways to develop it. Realize that reading is enjoyable if you have a good book. If you have a difficult book and you are forcing yourself through it, it will seem like a task.
Set time. You should have some time during every day when you'll read for at least 5 to 10 minutes. For example, make it a habit to read during breakfast and lunch and even dinner if you eat alone.
Always carry a book. When I leave the house, I always make sure to have my car keys and one book at hand. The book stays with me in the car, and I take it into the office and to appointments and pretty much everywhere I go.
Find a place in your home where you can sit in a comfortable chair. Don't lie down unless you're going to sleep. There shouldn't be a television or a computer near the chair, and no music or no noisy family members/ roommates. If you don't have a place like this, create one.
Reduce television/ the Internet. If you really want to read more, try cutting back on time on TV or the Internet. Still, every minute you reduce of the Internet/ TV, you could use for reading. This could create hours of book reading time.
A. Wherever you go, take a book with you.
B. Go to bookstores.
C. Have some good tea or coffee while you read.
D. Find a quiet place.
E. This may be difficult for some people.
F. If this happens, give up the book and find another one that you'll really love.
G. It means you will read no matter how busy you are.
I was shopping in the supermarket when I heard the young voice. "Mom, come here! There's this lady here, my 1!"
The mother rushed to her son; then she turned to me to 2.
I smiled and told her: "It's okay." Then I talked to the boy, "Hi, I'm Darry Kramer. How are you?" He 3 me from head to toe, and asked: "Are you a little 4?"
"Yes, I have a son," I answered. "Why are you so little?" he asked.
"It's the way I was 5," I said. "Some people are little. Some are tall. I'm just not going to grow any bigger." After I answered his other questions, I shook the boy's hand, and left.
My life as a little person is filled with 6like that. I enjoy talking to children and explaining why I look different from their parents.
It takes only one glance to see my 7. I stand 114 cm tall. I was born a dwarf (侏儒). 8 so, I did all the things other kids did when I was growing up.
I didn't 9 how short I was until I started school. Some kids picked on (找茬) me, calling me names. Then I knew. I began to 10 the first day of school each year. New students would always stare at me as I 11 to climb the school bus stairs.
But I learned to smile and 12 the fact that I was going to be 13 my whole life. I decided to make my uniqueness an advantage rather than a disadvantage. What I lacked in height, I 14 in personality.
I'm 47 now, and the stares have not 15 as I've grown older. People are 16 when they see me driving. I try to keep a good attitude. When people are rude, I 17 myself: "Look what else I have — a great family, nice friends."
It's the children's questions that make my life 18. I enjoy answering their questions. My 19 is that people will accept their peers (同龄人), no matter what size and shape they come in, and treat them with 20
Tomb Sweeping Day is important Chinese holiday that has been celebrated for centuries. It falls April 4 or April 5, depending on the lunar calendar. It is a (nation) holiday in China, with most people having the day off from work or school to allow time to travel to the grave-sites (墓地).
The day is meant to remember and pay respect to a person's ancestors. Thus, on Tomb Sweeping Day, families visit and clean the grave-site of their ancestors (show) their respect.
First, weeds (remove) from the grave-site and the tombstone is cleaned and swept. Any necessary repairs to the grave-site are also made. The new earth is added and willow (branch) are placed on top of the grave-site.
Next, joss sticks (香) are placed by the grave. The sticks are then lit and an offering of food and paper money is placed at the tomb to honor (they) ancestors. Paper money is burned while family members show their respect by (sincere) bowing to the ancestors. Fresh flowers are placed at the tomb and some families also plant willow trees. In addition to (visit) grave-sites, people also go for walks in the countryside, plant willows (柳树), fly kites. Other traditional activities on Tomb Sweeping Day include playing tug-of-war(拔河) and swinging on swings.

I am happy to introduce a Chinese restaurant about you for your birthday party. I go there with my family last weekend. There are several reason why I like it. First, it is located in the city center but Bus No.11 will take him right there. Second, the environment inside is very much comfortable. It is very clean and the atmosphere is pleasant with fantastic music and amazed pictures on the walls. Third, the service there is real excellent. Last but not least, it offers a variety of dishes, who are delicious but not expensive. So I am sure this restaurant would be good choice.
