That day, my parents were leaving for our hometown and I went to see them off. In fact, my father had never traveled by air before, so I just took this 1 to make his experience wonderful. In spite of being asked to book train tickets, I got them air tickets.
The moment I handed over the tickets to him, he was2to see that I had booked them air tickets. The excitement was very 3 on his face, waiting for the time of travel. We went to the airport together, 4 the baggage, asked for a window seat and then waited restlessly for the security check-in. He was enjoying himself and I too, was filled with joy watching him 5 all these things.
As they were about to go in for the security check-in, he walked up to me with tears in his eyes and 6me. He became very emotional and it was not as if I had done something great, but the fact that this7a great deal to him.
I felt surprised at his 8. But later, thinking about the entire matter, I looked back on my life. How many 9 did our parents have? Did they come true? Without understanding the 10 situation, we, as children, asked for cricket bats, dresses, toys, outings, etc. Did we ever say thanks 11 they have done for us?
12 my Dad saying "thank you" to me, I want to say "I'm sorry" for 13 him wait so long for this small dream. I do realize how much he has sacrificed(牺牲)for my14 and I will do my best to give the best possible 15 to all their wishes. Being old does not mean that they have to give up everything. They have wishes, too.
Eat like a king in the morning, a prince at noon, and a farmer at night. This saying is all about the importance of breakfast. And now scientists can tell us just why it's so important. According to a study carried out at Imperial College London, UK, skipping the first meal of the day not only means you eat more at lunch, but also that your brain wants to find more unhealthy foods.
The study suggests that there is a special part of our brain called the orbitofrontal cortex (眶额皮层), which plays an important part in making choices about what we eat. It is used for identifying the taste of food, especially when skipping breakfast. It is more likely to target high-calorie foods when you're on an empty stomach.
Scientists did an experiment on this. Dr Tony Goldstone from Imperial College London, scanned (扫描) the brains of 21 men and women, around the age of 25. On the first day, these people skipped breakfast before the scans. On the second day, they had cereal (谷物), bread and jam as breakfast. After the scan on both days, they had their lunch.
When the volunteers had skipped breakfast, they ate around 20 percent more at lunch, compared with days when they had eaten breakfast. Their brain scans also showed the orbitofrontal cortex was especially responsive to high-calorie foods. "We believe that it identifies the value of foods – how pleasant, how delicious something is," Goldstone told The Guardian.
① The volunteers skipped breakfast.
② The volunteers had lunch.
③ The volunteers had a brain scan.
Billie Holiday was one of the greatest jazz(爵士音乐) singers in America. Her life was just a mixture of success and tragedy. Her singing expressed her experiences and feelings.
Billie Holiday was born Eleanora Fagan in 1915 in Baltimore, Maryland. Her parents were Sadie Fagan and Clarence Holiday. They were young when their daughter was born. Their marriage failed because Clarence Holiday was often out. He traveled as a musician with some of the earliest jazz bands and inspired his daughter.
Sadie Fagan cleaned people's houses to make a living. But she could not support her family with the money she earned. So she moved to New York City where the pay was higher. She left her daughter in Baltimore with one of her distant relatives.
The young girl Eleanora Fagan changed her name to Billie, because she liked a movie star, Billie Dove. The talented Billie Holiday loved singing. She sang and listened to music whenever she could. In one place near her home there was a machine that played records. The building was a theater where many famous singers also performed their newly-made songs for free.
Billie cleaned floors and did other jobs for the theater so that she could listen to the records. It was there that young Billie first heard the records of some famous black American blues artists of the 1920, she heard Bessie Smith sing the blues. And she heard Louis Armstrong play the horn. Both musicians had a great influence on her.
Billie Holiday once said, "I do not think I'm singing. I feel like I am playing a horn. What comes out is what I feel. I hate straight singing. I have to change a tune to my own way of doing it. That is all I know."
From the first use of the rocket to carry satellites into space to the setting up of space stations, human being have been putting great efforts into space research. And so far, we have achieved many successes. But there are still lots of tasks in front of us and we should not stop trying progress.
The international space station is an important step we should take in space exploration. It is not only helpful but also necessary. It provides a proper space environment for many experiments that we have wanted to do for a long time. It is also a base for the observations of the earth and the universe. It could also be an important base for later travel to the moon and Mars. In a word, if we want to explore space more, the first thing we should do is to set up a space station.
As the space station costs a lot of money, it is hard for one country alone to establish one. The USA seems to be the only country that has the ability to build a space station alone and it has tried to do so, but not very successful. So it aggregated many other countries to work on it together. Though it is still extremely expensive, it is much cheaper than doing it alone. It is really a job that needs everyone's effort and will benefit everyone.
But even so, the funds needed are still a big problem. As for the USA, it seems it has too many things to spend its money on. Although it is the richest country in the world, it has much debt every year. It has to make arrangements about its finance, and try to find a balance in all these issues.
I was always told that the three Ps, patience, positive thinking and perseverance, were a sure path success. But this advice does not always work as planned. My high school maths exam is one example. The exam, was originally to be held in our classroom, (change) to the library at the last minute. This, , didn't bother me because maths had always been my strongest subject. I patiently walked to the library, took my seat and did some deep breathing to help relax . But my mood changed quickly when I saw the first question. I had no idea how to do it .I tried to stay (positive) and persevered I finally found the solution. With the problem (solve), I felt proud of my achievement. (fortunate), I then noticed that I had just 10 minutes left (complete) the rest.
