The forest in Senegal, a country in western Africa, is full of the chimps' usual noises. Suddenly dogs bark. Larger male chimps drop from the trees to face the threat while the others climb to safety. Then the dogs' young human masters appear.

One mother chimp with a tiny baby tries to run. The dogs attack and separate them. The two teenage boys quickly catch the baby chimp. But they don't act out of sympathy — they save the baby so they can sell it.

After the teenagers return to their hometown, they visit a man who is said to be very interested in chimps. When they ask the man, Johnny Kante, if he wants to buy the baby, he replies, “That's not what we do.” Kante is a member of a scientific team. Although Kante is angry with the teens for capturing the chimp, he hides his anger and persuades them to take him to the baby chimp.

Unsure of what to do next upon seeing the chimp, Kante calls Jill Pruetz, the head of the chimp research team. “I'm really worried,” says Pruetz, doubtful that the mother is still alive. But knowing that wild chimps sometimes adopt orphans(孤儿), Kante and pruetz decide they must try to return the baby chimp to its wild community.

Kante pays another visit to the teenagers. After he explains how much trouble they are in, because chimps are an endangered species, he requests they should give him the frightened baby without payment. They agree. Kante takes the baby chimp to his home and feeds her milk from a bottle whenever she cries.

The next morning, Pruetz and Kante leave the baby with another team member and begin their search for the wild chimps. Pruetz quickly finds the group in the woods. She recognizes the female that is without her child.

Pruetz is so excited that she runs the entire mile back to bring the baby chimp to the tree where the chimps are hanging out. The researchers place the baby on the ground near the tree and back away. Almost immediately, a male chimp drops to the ground and stares at the baby curiously. He carries her back to where the mother is waiting.

Pruetz still can't believe how fortunate they were to have reunited the mother and child. “Surprising is the only word I can think of,” she says.

Our local Community Youth Club is a very popular organization with young people in my town. I have been a member for four years now and I've taken part in a lot of interesting projects. These include fun activities such as holiday camps and discos. We have organized sports competitions and we even made a video.

But it isn't all just enjoyment, we have also started doing social work to help people in our neighbourhood. We have organized activities for small children during the holidays. We have also formed a social support group to help young people stop smoking.

We are particularly proud of the most recent group we have created. It organizes regular visits to the local old people's home. This idea came from a school visit to an old people' home. My class spent an afternoon at a home and everyone found the visit very rewarding.

The old people at the home were very excited by our visit. They were very talkative(健谈的) and they told us their personal stories. During our visit, the home was filled with the sound of laughter. We sang songs and played games with the old people and had tea together. But we realized that life wasn't always easy. Some of them were in poor health and were very unhappy. They couldn't go outside the visits by children brought some sunshine into their lives.

Many young people like me do not live with our grandparents and we have very little contact with elderly people. As a result, many young people don't know what they are like and we have a lot of wrong ideas about them. We have little or no idea of the kind of lives they lead in their homes. After this visit, my friends and I decided we should do something to help improve the quality of their lives.

Since the creation of our visiting group, over twenty volunteers(志愿者) have joined us. Up to now, we have organized three group evenings and a concert. But it is the individual(单独的) visits which are the most important. Club members regularly visit old people and everyone finds the experience rich and rewarding.

Dogs are man's best friends—they are very good for children's health. Researchers found that family pets helped to protect babies against breathing problems and infections (感染).

A team from Kuopio University Hospital in Finland studied 397 babies born at their hospital between September 2012 and May 2015 for their first year. They found that babies who lived with a dog or a cat spent fewer weeks with ear infections, coughs or runny noses. They were also less likely to need antibiotics (抗生素) than babies in homes without a pet.

Study author, Dr. Eija Bergroth, said dogs brought dirt and bacteria (细菌) into the home, which helped children's immune system (免疫系统) to be strong. This improved their defenses against bacteria.

As part of the study, parents filled out weekly diaries starting when the children were nine weeks old, recording information on babies' health as well as their contact with cats and dogs. They recorded if they had fever, ear infections, coughs or running noses. They also put down whether they needed antibiotics.

Based on those diaries, the researchers found that about a third of the children spent most of their first year with a pet dog and 24 percent in a home with a cat. And children with no dog contact at home were healthy for 65 percent of the time, compared to between 72 and 76 percent for those who did have a pet.

The researchers also found that contact with dogs, more than cats, was tied to fewer weeks of sickness for babies.

However, the researchers said they couldn't rule out the possibility that people who own dogs are less likely to get sick for another reason, not due to any protection offered by pets.

Directions: For each of them. There are four choices marked A, B, C and D. choose the one that fits best according to the Information given in the passage you have just read.

Hot Air Balloons

A hot air balloon is made up of 3 main parts:

The Envelope

The actual fabric balloon which holds the air.

The Burner

The unit which pushes the heat up into the envelope

The Basket

Where the passengers and pilot stand

The basis of how the balloon works is that warmer air rises in cooler air. This is because hot air is lighter than cool air as it has less mass per unit of volume. Mass can be defined by the measure of how much matter something contains. The actual balloon has to be large as it takes a large amount of heated air to lift it off the ground.

The burner uses propane gas to heat up the air in the envelope to move the balloon off the ground and into the air. The pilot must keep firing the burner at regular intervals throughout the flight to ensure that the balloon continues to the stable. Naturally, the hot air will not escape from the hot at the very bottom of the envelop as firstly, hot air rises and secondly, the floating power keeps it moving up.

To move the balloon upwards, the pilot opens up the propane value which lets the propane flow to the burner which in turn frees the flame up into the envelope. It works in much the same way as a gas grill: the more you open the valve, the bigger the flame to beat the air and the faster the balloon rises.

The “Parachute Valve” at the very top of the balloon is what is used to bring the balloon down towards the ground. It is a circle of fabric cut out of the top of the envelop which is controlled by a rope which runs down through the middle of the envelope to the basket. If the pilot wants to bring the balloon down, he or she simply pulls on the rope which will open the valve, letting hot air escape, decreasing the inner air temperature. This cooling of air causes the balloon to slow its rise.

The pilot can operate horizontally by changing the vertical position of the balloon because the wind blows in different directions at different altitudes. If the pilot wants to move in a particular direction, he or she simply arises and falls to the appropriate level and rides with the wind.

Shot in more than 40 locations in L.A., the musical La La Land is "a love letter to the city". To coincide with UK release, we asked a local writer to pick some of the film's amazing settings.

    Judge Harry Pregerson Interchange

La La Land's opening scene is a six-minute dance that plays out in L.A.'s bad traffic. It is also where the film's leading roles, struggling actress Mia and jazz pianist Sebastian, first encounter each other—in a road anger incident. The scene is said to have been filmed over two hot days in south L.A.

    Smokehouse Restaurant, Burbank

This is the setting for the scene in which Mia discovers Sebastian's talent for the piano. The fictional Lipton's restaurant—where jazz purist Sebastian was reluctant to play Christmas music—is in reality a place long frequented by actors, producers and other show business types. It has been on this spot, across the street from the Warner Bros studio, since 1949. In the film, the outer wall of Lipton's is the You are the Star mural (壁画), which features Marilyn Monroe, Charlie Chaplin and others, which is on the corner of Hollywood Boulevard and Wicox Avenue in Hollywood in reality.

    Warner Bros Studios, Burbank

Mia works at the studio's coffee shop, where Sebastian comes to meet her. As they wander the studio's lot, Mia points out "the window that Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman looked out in Casablanca." It's one of the film's numerous nods to movie history. Warner Brons is still a working studio, with 35 sound stages, 14 exterior sets and visitor tours.

    Cathy's Corner, Mount Hollywood Drive

This section of the road that winds through Griffth Park is the setting of their dance play. It overlooks the San Fernando Valley and features on the film poster. Cathy's Corner is near famed Mulholland Drive, but prepare for disappointment if you're expecting a park bench and street lamps, which only exist in the movie.
