People like to keep different animals such as dogs as pets. But cats are the most popular pets among Americans. So it is not surprising there are many expressions about cats. Do you know any of them? Now let me introduce some to you.

Some cats like to catch small birds, like canaries. If someone looks very proud or pleased with himself, we say "he looks like the cat that ate the canary".

Sometimes, a cat likes to play with a small animal it catches. So if you "play cat and mouse with someone", you keep him in a state (状态) of uncertain expectation. For example, a child might repeatedly give something sweet to her little brother, and then take it back when her brother is confused or relaxed.

A cat will often catch a small animal and show it to its owner. The saying that "looks like something the cat dragged in(把……拖进来)" means something in bad condition.

"A fat cat" is a person with a lot of money.

There are many other expressions about cats in America. How interesting! Which kind of cat are you, or which kind would you like to be?

Do you know how chocolate is made?Recently my class had a field trip to the Cadbury Chocolate Factory in Toronto,Canada.

We were divided into 10 groups and visited an old building.The guide first explained the history of the factory.Then we got some earbuds(耳塞) to protect our ears from the noise of the machines.We also needed to wear disposable(一次性的) lab clothes and hairnets(发网)

After these preparations,we went upstairs and entered the chocolate﹣making area.The floor was filled up with many machines.Each machine has a different job.The whole floor only has two people working,because machines do most of the work.Next,and there were more than1,000 people working in the factory.But now the factory is very different.It's amazing how technology is changing people's life.

Later,we saw the chocolate﹣making process.We got a cocoa bean,some powdered(粉状的),kind of like dark chocolate.It is the raw material used to make chocolate.The powdered chocolate tasted good already.It is a combination of cocoa bean,milk and sugar.The final product tasted delicious.

Finally,we bought some chocolate at a shop in the factory.It was at a very low price.I learned about the chocolate industry during the field trip.And I also realized how important technology is.

Woodcarving (木雕) is a traditional folk art form in China. Chen Jia, a young woman from Chaozhou, has concentrated (集中精力) herself on passing forward and innovating (创新) Chaozhou woodcarving.

Chen, born in the 1990s, began to learn the craft (工艺) when she was14 years old under the influence and support of her family. "I wanted to give up several times during the learning process, as I often hurt myself. It's also very difficult. My father wanted me to give up woodcarving and find an easier job. However, I fought on." Chen said.

Chen recalled that she had a strong sense of achievement when her first woodcarving artwork, which took her several months to finish, was sold. "Since I have learned it, I just keep going." said the artist.

To finish one woodcarving piece, a woodcarver usually needs more than 30 carving knives and wooden hammers of different sizes. A common theme for carvings includes different sea animals. In the past, Chaozhou woodcarvings were mainly used to decorate buildings, including serving as furniture and ceremonial objects. However, they have started to lose their charm among people living in modern life.

To attract young people to better appreciate the traditional art form, Chen has innovated on the craft in terms of its themes, shapes and usage. She now carves out small decorative objects and articles for daily use, hoping that more and more people will accept the art works as their liking.
