A rabbit is running into its hole. You may ask, "What happened?"

    Well, when a rabbit sees something dangerous, it runs away. Its tail moves up and down as it runs. When other rabbits see this tail moving up and down, they run too. They know that there is a danger. The rabbit has told them something without making a sound. It has given them a signal.

    Many other animals use this kind of language too. When a bee found some food, it goes back to its home. It cannot tell the other bees where the food is by speaking to them, but it does a little dance in the air. This tells the other bees to go with it to find food.

    Some animals say things by making sounds. A dog barks, for example, when a stranger comes near. A cat purrs (发出呼噜呼噜的声音) when it is pleased. Some birds make several different sounds, each with its own meaning.

    But human beings have something that no animals have—a large number of words about things, actions, feelings or ideas. We are able to give each other information and to tell or inform other people what is in our mind or how we feel. By writing words down we can remind ourselves of the things that have happened, or send messages to people far away. No animal can do this. No animal has the wonderful power of language.

    No one knows how man learned to make words. As centuries went by, he made more and more new words. This is what we mean by language.

    People living in different countries made different kinds of words. Today there are about fifteen hundred different languages in the world. A very large English dictionary, for example, contains four or five hundred thousand words. But we do not know all of them. The words we know are called vocabulary. We should try to make our vocabulary larger. Read as many books as possible. When we meet a new word, look it up in the dictionary. A dictionary is the most useful book.

Clark and Dale were staying in the same room in a hospital. Clark was so sick that he could not even move his body._He had to spend all his time lying on his back. Dale could sit up in his bed for an hour each afternoon. His bed was next to the room's only window. 

Over time, Clark and Dale became good friends. Every afternoon, Dale would look out of the room's only window, describing the scenery outside for his friend. He told Clark about the flowers in a park outside the window, the people walking by, the green trees beside roads—anything that might interest a man. 

One morning, when a nurse came to check on the two men, she found that Dale had died in his sleep. As soon as the room seemed tidy again, Clark asked if he could move to the bed next to the window so that he could look out of the window himself. The nurse agreed. Slowly, he could take his first look at the world outside. To his surprise, he could see nothing but a blank wall of another building. 

The nurse explained that Dale had been blind. He had never seen anything outside the window at all—but he described beautiful scenes to help his friend feel better. 

Once a wise man and his student traveled on the horses to a mountain village which even couldn't be found in a map. They were well 1 at a small house by a family of five. The wise man asked, "How do you live in such a lonely place?

"That's what keeps us going," said the host, pointing to a thin and tired cow. "She gives us 2 , some of which we drink and some we make into cheese. When there is extra (额外的), we 3 the milk and cheese for other food."

The wise man thanked them and left the village. When he reached the first turning in the road, he said to his student, "Go back and get the cow, take it to the cliff (悬) and 4 it off." Although the student was shocked and angry, he followed his master's order.

Years later, the student still felt a sense of 5 about what he had done, so he returned to the poor family to find out what he could do. 6 , in place of the small house there turned into a large one with trees all around. He recognize (辨认) the host standing on the opposite who once treated him. He went over to the man and asked, "What happened?"

The man replied with a smile, "Our cow fell off the cliff and died. Firstly, we lost heart and didn't know 7 to live our life. Later, we accepted the fact and tried to come up with new ways of doing things and develop new skills. And so, we are now much 8 ."

Sometimes our dependence on something small and limited (有限的) is the biggest obstacle (障碍) to our growth. 9 you free yourself of the thought "it's little but it's certain and comfortable", then your life will really change. I hope you have the wisdom to recognize your "10 " this new year, and the courage to push it off the cliff.

As a child，I was a quite active boy. I was running around and getting hurt almost every day. My mom was worried. A neighbor advised me to learn to fish. I liked the idea，but my mom said no. A few years ago，I was kept away from any body of water!

At last，my mom wanted me to read books. Every day，she made me sit on a chair and read for an hour. As a boy，my uncle，a teacher，just put it down and pick another one，" he said. 

I started off with The Enormous Crocodile（《巨大的鳄鱼》）. After twenty pages. I was lying on the floor and laughing. This crocodile wants to eat children for a change，so he makes himself lock like a seesaw（跷跷板），I read Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Fantastic Mr. Fox. Both stories were exciting and easy to understand. 

As time went on，I started reading longer and more serious books. I was in the middle of Adventures of Huckleberry Finn when my mom said I should spend more time playing outside. But the book was too interesting to put down. To this day，I make time to read every day. 

If you haven't yet experienced the fun of reading，take my uncle's advice and find the "Right" books. They'll give you enjoyment，teach you something new, and even change your life.

The first International Basketball Expo（IBE）（国际篮球博览会） is from November 8th to 12th，2023，in Fujian. In the Basketball Expo，we can see great love for the sport. 

Song Yihong loves basketball very much. He is 11 years old now. He plays basketball for 6 years. At first，he does this sport because he wants to be tall（高的）. "I'm too short. I'm not happy about that. And my mother wants me to keep healthy，so I play basketball. "He plays basketball every Thursday and Friday evening，and also Sunday afternoon. 

At first，he finds it difficult but now he thinks it interesting and useful. He thanks his P. E. teacher and friends very much because they give him much help. He thinks he is ready（准备好的） to meet difficult things because basketball helps him to be strong（强壮的）. 

"I know many students love basketball too，but they think it's not easy. Don't be afraid（害怕的）. Just play and you can have fun!"

A Special Day

 One day when I was seven years old, I went to a park with my parents and sisters. We played on the grass and sat on the see-saw(跷跷板). It was a wonderful day. 

 Now, as a parent, I often think of how my words and actions might influence my children. Something ordinary might just become a special memory for them. 

 Last year, when my son turned four, we had a special day. In the morning, we drove to the train station and bought two tickets. We stood on the platform, enjoyed the sunshine and watched the trains come and go. Soon afterwards, we caught our train. We took two window seats and watched houses, bikers and cars whiz by(呼啸而过). 

 After getting off the train, we walked to a restaurant. We sat, looked through the menu and asked each other what we would like to eat. We waited patiently for our food and tried everything we had ordered. The foods were all our favorite. 

 Then, we walked around the city center. We visited a toy shop and ended up buying a train. After all, it was the little man's birthday. We also enjoyed some hot chocolate at a coffee shop. Finally, we made our way back to the train station and returned home. 

 Every so often, my son will look at me with dreamy eyes and ask, "Mama, when can we have a special day again?"

 Sometimes, we go to a park; sometimes, we try out a new restaurant. We don't do this too often, or it won't be special. But we don't do it too rarely, either, or we might forget how much we both love having them.
