March 22 is World Water Day. Believed to be the source (源头) of all life, water plays a great role in the beginning of Chinese civilization (文明) and has inspired wise ideas in Chinese philosophy (哲学).

Chinese civilization is one of the world's ancient river civilizations. It began thousands of years ago along the Yellow and Yangtze rivers, linking the culture to water from its beginning.

However, the way people and water get along has two sides. Water is highly important for life and growing things, but if we can't control it, it can cause big problems. Knowing the strong power of water, Chinese people have always tried to use it in the best way possible. For example, Yu, the first ruler of the Xia Dynasty (朝代), controlled floods by changing and digging the waterways so that the water could easily go into the sea.

The Dujiangyan irrigation (灌溉) system in Sichuan was cleverly built It makes full use of the natural features of the area without harming the environment.

Water is also given philosophical meanings to educate Chinese people and rule the country. According to Xunzi, Confucius (孔子) believed water had qualities such as justice and courage. He once said that: "He who is wise loves water; he who is virtuous loves mountains." So, Confucianism suggests that people should learn from water and train their sense of morality (道德感). Inspired by water, Laozi gave birth to the idea of "overcoming hardness with softness and non-action". These ideas later inspired rulers to follow the rules of nature and respect the will of the people.

On May 15，Zhang Rongqiao wiped tears from his eyes as China's Mars rover （巡视器） Zhurong landed safely on Mars. "I was so excited，" said Zhang.

As the chief designer （总设计师） of China's Tianwen Ⅰ Mars mission （任务），Zhang was chosen by the journal Nature on Dec 16 as one of the top 10 people "who helped shape science" in 2021.Under Zhang，China made a huge step in interplanetary （行星向的） exploration. "I got a taste of the old Chinese saying ﹣ it takes 10 years to sharpen a good sword，" Zhang told Nature.

In the Mars mission，Zhang led a team of thousands of researchers.The team was not only responsible for technical work like launches and flight control，but also for scientific research on Mars.

There were many difficulties.They knew little about the strange and complex environment of Mars. "We may not even know what we do not know about，" Zhang told Nature.

During the process，Zhang played a key part in the decision to send an orbiter （轨道飞行器），a lander （着陆器） and a rover to Mars together in one shipment （运输） ﹣ making China the first country to do so. "That's a big leap （飞跃） because China is doing in a single go （what NASA took decades （数十年） to do），" said Roberto Orosei from the Institute of Radioastronomy of Bologna in Italy.

Zhang also made the important decision to land the rover on Utopia Planitia，where there are special landforms （地形） for scientists to study.He hopes that the mission can do as much research as possible and bring back "rich" information.

"The buck stops with him （他敢作敢当），" said David Flannery，an astrobiologist （天体生物学家） at Queensland University of Technology in Australia.

The human spine（脊柱） doesn't just help us stand up straight. Inside the spine is the spinal cord (脊髓) {#blank#}1{#/blank#} The legs and feet send "sense" information to the brain, saying they're hurt or hot, for example. And the brain sends messages to the lower body, telling the legs to walk, dance or sit down. 

When someone's spinal cord is hurt, information about senses doesn't reach the brain from the lower body. And control messages can't make it to the lower body from the brain. {#blank#}2{#/blank#}

Surprisingly, now scientists in Switzerland have given three paralyzed men the ability to walk again. All of the three men had damaged their spinal cords in motorcycle accidents and couldn't move their legs. To help them walk again, a special device (装置) was put directly on the lower part of their spinal cord. 

The scientists controlled the device from a computer. {#blank#}3{#/blank#} In the past, scientists have had some successes with the similar device in the lower spine. Some patients have even trained themselves over months to be able to walk. 

But this research is different. {#blank#}4{#/blank#}Instead, the computer tells the device to send "walking" messages. The scientists use computers to create patterns of movement—like taking a step—that work well with each patient. The patients then choose the pattern they want, and the muscles (肌肉) move in the chosen way. 

Over time, the three men are able to walk on their own, using a special walker with buttons to trigger (激发) each leg. {#blank#}5{#/blank#} The scientists are hopeful that in the future, this technology will allow more paralyzed people to walk again. 

Last night one of my Chinese friends took me to a concert of Chinese folk music. The piece which was played on the erhu especially moved me. The music was strangely beautiful ，but under the beauty I sensed a strong sadness and pain. The piece had a simple name，Erquan Yingyue （Moon Reflected on Second Spring），and I began to understand the sadness in the music. 

The music was written by Abing，a folk musician who was born in the city of Wuxi in 1893. His mother died when he was very young. Abing's father taught him to play many musical instruments，such as the drums，and in the year of 1910，Abing was known for his musical ability. However，Abing's life grew worse. He was very poor. Not only that，he developed a serious illness and became blind. For several years，he continued to sing and play on the streets. He performed in this way for many years. 

Abing's amazing musical skills made him very popular during his lifetime. By the end of his life，he could play over 600 pieces of music. Many of these were written by Abing himself. It is a pity that only six pieces of music in total were recorded for the future world to hear，but his popularity continues to this day. Today（伤口） from their own sad or painful experiences. 

Most people don't have interest in rainforests. {#blank#}1{#/blank#} Secondly, they seem dark and dangerous. There are snakes and dangerous plants everywhere. However, Jeff Corwin is different from most people. He has been interested in rainforests since he was a child.

Rainforests produce much of the air we breathe every day. {#blank#}2{#/blank#} Since then, he has had one goal, to tell people the importance of rainforests. Besides, he is most interested in the special animals living there.

{#blank#}3{#/blank#} Many of the animals there cannot live anywhere else. The rainforests are important to these animals, and these animals are important to the rainforests, too. They are good for the forests, as each one plays a role in keeping the rainforests healthy.

Rainforests are disappearing very quickly. {#blank#}4{#/blank#} The plants and animals that used to live in these forests either die or must find a new forest as their home. The good news is that there are a lot of people who want to save rainforests. The bad news is that saving rainforests is not going to be easy. It will take the efforts of many people working together.

{#blank#}5{#/blank#} He has started clubs for young people. The clubs teach ways to help protect rainforests. Jeff believes education is the best way to protect rainforests. When people learn more about rainforests, they will try to help save them.

When Australia had terrible bushfires, people gave money to help the animals. Schoolchildren sold cakes and sports stars donated money, too. The fires were worse than others in the past.

Koalas are slower than animals like kangaroos, so the fires are more dangerous for them. Many died and many were very sick. One koala hospital needed $25,000. It asked people to give money online and they sent millions of dollars!

People love koalas. They are cute. But what about more unusual and unattractive animals? There are kinds with bigger problems than koalas, for example, the Mary River turtle (海龟), also from Australia.

This turtle looks stranger than others. It's got two"fingers" under its chin (下巴) and green "hair", so it's also called the"punk turtle". The hair is actually a plant that grows on its head and parts of its body. Unfortunately, it's harder to get money to help animals like this. The Mary River turtle's problems began in the 1960s, when people took the baby turtles from the river to sell them in pet shops. Now, people live closer to its home than before and their dogs kill the turtles for food. The Mary River is dirtier than before and more polluted, too. A few years ago, scientists believed there were very few turtles living in the area. We don't know how many there are now.

Destruction(破坏) of the places animals live in is putting them in danger - we kill the plants they eat, we make the air and water dirty, our pets eat them. All animal species on Earth are important because if one species dies, that changes the habitat for all other animals. We need to look after all animals - not just the more popular ones.
