A tornado (龙卷风) is a kind of strong storm with air which moves in a circle quickly. They can move over 200 miles per hour and cause a lot of damage (损坏). As they move across the land, they can easily pick up cars, trucks, and even houses, and then throw them very far. It is important to find a safe place if a tornado gets close.

A safe place could be a basement ( 地下室) or the lowest floor. If you are in a home without a basement, try to find a first-floor bathroom or a small room without windows in the middle of your house. You should curl up (蜷缩) into a ball and cover your head and neck with your hands.

But there are some people who actually want to get close to tornadoes. They are scientists who want to learn more about tornadoes. One of the best ways to do this is to get as close as possible to the tornado. They use special tools to measure (测量) what is happening in and around a tornado.

One special tool is called a tornado probe ( 探测仪). Inside the tornado probe, there are sensors (传感器) to measure wind speed, temperature, pressure, and direction.

Some probes even have cameras, so the scientists can see and understand what it's like to be in a tornado.

To be able to get these measurements, the scientists have to get a tornado probe near or into a tornado. Scientists will try to guess where a tornado will go next. Then they drive to that location and put down the probe. If they do not guess correctly, they pick up their probe and try another place. If they are right, the tornado will go near or even right over the probe. Then they take all of the measurements

from the probe and use them to predict where future tornadoes may form (形成) and travel. And they can give people some warning to keep away from a dangerous tornado.

Mars （火星） is a planet and is the 4^th closest planet to the Sun.The distances from the Sun to Mars is more than 141 million miles.Mars is the largest planet in the solar system（太阳系），which makes Mars the 2^nd smallest planet in the solar system.Mars is one of the four planets in the solar system that is a rocky planet.These rocky planets are called "Terrestrial（类地的） Planets".

It's not know when Mars was found and by whom as Mars has been known for a very long time，and one of the planets that can be seen from the Earth without a telescope（望远镜）.

Mars's orbit轨道） around the Sun is the 4^th fastest orbit of all the solar system planets.Mars is red in colour and is very cold.Not the coldest of planets in the solar system but very cold all the same.The temperature on Mars is on average 80 degrees，and can get a lot colder at times.

At times in the summer near the Mars the temperature can reach 70 degrees.You may think it's warm enough to live；however，the atmosphere（大气层）₂ over 95%.Mars orbits the Sun in 687 days，which means 1 Earth year on Mars is 687 days.

Some animals can easily find their way home after a long journey. How do they make it? Scientific research shows that they are born with certain unusual abilities for direction.

A certain kind of ants, for example, can count their steps to avoid getting lost. They can go as far as 110 metres and bring food home. These ants live in the open desert (沙漠), so they have nothing to guide them along the way. It's like someone walking six kilometres through a dark forest.

Some fish have an unbelievable sense of smell. They can smell even a single drop of their home water in a large sea area. Some sea birds have a similar ability. They are able to make a smell map of their flying area.

Some animals can sense the earth's magnetic field (磁场), while humans can't. This magnetic field guides a certain kind of fish when they swim a long way to a place and then back. How can this kind of fish do that? It is still a mystery. Scientists have no good answers yet.

However, animals with such unusual abilities still have difficulty dealing with environmental changes caused by human activities. For example, many birds depend on stars for direction, but they get lost easily at night when city lights are kept on all night. To solve this problem, we can simply turn off some lights at night. Clearly, one small act of humans may mean a lot to animals.

In our school, all students have their favourite subjects. But students in different grades like different subjects.

In Grade Seven, students' favourite subject is always Chinese, because it's their mother tongue. They like PE and music, too. Students at this age like playing sports. Why is music welcome? Because most of them think music is relaxing.
