Everyone Can Change the World

What can we do to help protect the environment? It seems useless to just pick up a piece of trash, but what will happen if you keep doing it every day? Tommy Kleyn, an ordinary man from the Netherlands, may give you the answer.

Tommy Kleyn walked past a polluted river on his way to work every day. It used to be a beautiful view, but the trash on the bank made it dirty and smelly. So Tommy decided to pick up the trash along the river a little bit at a time after work. "It took me about 30 minutes to fill one garbage bag with trash, but one garbage bag didn't seem helpful in a place as polluted as this. I decided to fill one bag of trash each day as I passed by," Tommy said. Every day, Tommy took pictures of the river and shared them on his Facebook page. To his surprise, in just six days, he had made great progress with his cleanup effort. He felt happy and kept doing it. Gradually, more and more people knew about Tommy's story. Other people in the community began following in his footsteps and cleaning up trash on their way home, too.

"The idea is to encourage people to fill one garbage bag with litter each day. It only takes 30 minutes, but it really makes a difference and you will be amazed at how good you feel afterwards," he said.

People from all over the world have been moved and inspired by Tommy's story. No effort is useless if we keep doing it every day. Ordinary people like you and me can also make a difference to the world we live in if we take actions right now.

If you dropped a piece of fruit on your computer keyboard, would you think about eating it again? What if you dropped it in the toilet? Bacteria can live everywhere, even in some unexpected places.

If you eat at your computer, sneeze on your keyboard, or sit down to surf the Internet without first washing your hands, your computer keyboard could be bad for your health. According to the US National Research Centre, the average computer carries 400 times more bacteria than a toilet bowl does.

Could one of the dirtiest things in your home be right in your hand? Yes: the TV remote control. It gets dropped on the floor, put on the sofa and everyone in the house holds it. Scientists found that about half of the tested remote controls carry the cold virus.

Don't forget your toothbrush. Do you put it in the bathroom? Studies show that flushing the toilet releases bacteria in the air. Bacteria can remain in the air for at least two hours. They may pollute your toothbrush. You can find ways to solve this problem. Try to keep your toothbrush far from the toilet. Make sure that it is in an upright position after each use. It's also important to change your toothbrush every three months.

Here are some other places to watch out for:

    At home

The kitchen is one of the places with the most bacteria—more than the bathroom. Dishcloths and kitchen sponges are great places for bacteria since they are always wet after being used. Try to make them dry.

    At school

When you put your schoolbags on the floor or in the bus, many bacteria can live on the bottom of it. Try to clean your schoolbag often.

    In public places

Escalator handrails, shopping cart handles, public books and magazines are top bacteria carriers. That's why the first thing to do when getting home is to wash your hands.

Yes, bacteria are everywhere. But don't be too afraid to touch those things. Most of bacteria are harmless. Just remember to wash your hands regularly. It is the most useful way to protect yourself from bacteria and viruses.

Our Class Rules

Hello, everybody! I'm Lisa from Darwin International School. Today our class had a discussion about the class rules. Here are our different points.

Some think we should listen to the teachers very carefully in class and write down the notes because schoolwork is the most important. At school when we are doing our homework, do not  talk—that may disturb(打扰) others. It is necessary to hand in our homework in time every day.

The mobile phone is not allowed to be taken to our class because it may be bad for our study.

Some think how to be a polite student is more important. We should pay attention to our manners. For example, when you cough, turn your head away from others and cover your mouth with your hand. Afterward, you should say, "Excuse me." Greet the teachers by saying something like, "Good morning Mrs. Graham!" In the dining hall, we should keep quiet while having lunch. After we eat, we must clean our tables and don't leave any litter. It is also important to answer all questions with a complete sentence.

Our teacher Mr Jackson also showed his ideas. He said, "No matter what happens, always be honest. Accept that you are going to make mistakes. Learn from them and move on."

In my opinion, it's a good idea to wear the school uniforms(校服)on weekdays because I will never think about what to wear next day!
