Have you ever counted the number of digits (数字) in your mobile phone number? Your number has 11 digits. You may sometimes find it hard to remember your number. That's because China has the longest mobile phone numbers in the world. Why is that?

The 11 digits can be divided into three parts. Each part has a different meaning. The first three numbers tell you which mobile phone service company it is. For example, 135 is for China Mobile Communications Corporation and 188 is for China Unicom. The fourth to the seventh digits tell you where the number is registered (注册). And the last four digits are random (随机的).

The main reason for using 11 digits is that we have the largest population in the world. We once had 10 numbers. But as our population grew, there were not enough numbers for us to use. So we began to use 11 digits starting from 1999. Eleven digits can be used to make tens of billions of mobile phone numbers. That's enough for each person to have seven or eight phone numbers to use in China.

And mobile phone numbers can be recycled. Usually, the service company will reuse a canceled number after three to six months. If you call a number that you haven't contacted for a long time, you may find that its owner has changed.

Besides China, Britain and Japan also use 11-digit mobile phone numbers. But their numbers always start with 0. So they cannot create as many numbers as we can. Countries like the United States, Australia and India use phone numbers with 10 digits. Canada's mobile phone numbers are perhaps the shortest in the world: they use seven digits.

Canadian: In my country, the mobile phone numbers use seven digits. Why does this mobile phone have 11 digits—13958583739?

A different kind of alarm clock

When Matty Sallin, 24, was studying art and technology at New York University, he got an interesting task for the final exam:Create something for the ordinary family. He decided to create an alarm clock.

"To get up in time, many people have to use an alarm clock every morning. But the sound of the clock is extremely noisy and unpleasant." he says. So before he started to design the new clock, he asked different people what they'd like to wake up to in the morning. A lot of them said, "The smell of bacon(培根)."

So Sallin and his two classmates invented a new kind of alarm clock: a wooden box with a pig face and a digital clock that uses the smell of cooking bacon to wake people up. He explains, "There's no danger of burning, because I built it carefully, It uses special light bulbs(灯泡) instead of a fire for cooking and turns off automatically after ten minutes. "Just a few easy steps are required to set the "alarm".

"What you do is to put a few pieces of bacon meat inside the box the night before, then you set the alarm," says Sallin. "If you set the alarm for 8:00, it will turn on at 7:50 and slow cook for ten minutes under the bulbs. Then the bulbs turn off and a fan blows the smell out through the nose of the pig."

"So the pleasant smell of bacon will wake you up. There will be no more noisy alarms," says Sallin. "Then you can open the door on the side and pull the bacon out and eat it."

When Sallin was a kid, he spent a lot of time making drawings of inventions. "I wanted to make a lift in my back yard and a special tree house," he says. "But I never really thought I'd become an inventor!"

Sallin got an A for his alarm clock and went on to invent other things-but people continue to email him every day asking where they can buy his alarm clack. If he decides to produce and sell his special alarm clock, maybe he can build a successful business out of it.

It's early in the morningand the alarm clock has already rung several time. You have to pull yourselfout of bed and rush to school because you're afraid of being late for school.

As a school student, this is probably a commonexperience for you. But thanks to new rules, students in Zhejiang andHeilongjiang provinces can now stay in bed longer than before.

On Feb 23, the Zhejiang Department of Educationannounced (宣布) a new rule that asksprimary schools to start school later. According to the rule, start times couldbe different among different grades, with students in Grade 1 and 2 starting noearlier than 8:30 am.

A similar guideline (指导方针) was announced by the education department in HeilongjiangProvince on Feb 24. Students from all primary and junior high schools in theprovince have been required (要求) to arrive at school noearlier than 8 am.

According to a 2016 study by the ZhejiangDepartment of Education, half students in Grade 4 slept nine hours or more anight, while the enough sleep time for primary students in 10 hours.

"I welcome the new rule so much. It is sucha wonderful rule that gives my son enough time for breakfast, which isnecessary for his health and growth", a mother named Xu Li said. She isfrom Hangzhou and his son is in Grade 1. These changes have received muchpraise as they make students get enough sleep and enough time for breakfast.

Pushing back school times isn't unique (唯一的) to China. In the United States, schools in at least 21 statesbegan to start school later in 2017, as studies have shown that later schoolstart times could be good for students' development.
