Hello, everyone! Up to now, we have finished learning the first three units of Book 1. Now let's review what we have learnt together.

    In Unit One, we have learnt about what kind of friends we should make from our friend Anne {#blank#}1{#/blank#}was killed by the German Nazis during World War Ⅱ. It was the first time in her life that she{#blank#}2{#/blank#}(keep)diaries in the hiding place. So she had great difficulty{#blank#}3{#/blank#}(set) down what she and her family had gone through. Though she grew so crazy about everything to do with nature, it was no pleasure looking through the dusty windows any longer.

    In Unit Two, we have known that there is more than one kind of English in the world and in some important ways they are very different{#blank#}4{#/blank#}one another. Believe it or not, there is no such thing as standard English. However, today the number of people learning English in China{#blank#}5{#/blank#}(increase)rapidly, although they find{#blank#}6{#/blank#}hard to learn English well. As high school students, we should make full use of our time{#blank#}7{#/blank#} (have) a good command of English in order to pass the College Entrance Examinations in three years.

    In Unit Three, our friends Wang Kun and Wang Wei made up their {#blank#}8{#/blank#} (mind) to take a great bike trip along the Mekong River. They both bought {#blank#}9{#/blank#} expensive mountain bike. Finally they got the chance after graduating from college. Soon they got their cousins{#blank#}10{#/blank#}(interest) in cycling too. After making preparations, they together started their journey and realized their dream to take a great bike trip.

    In 1914, Thomas Edison, at the age of 67, lost his factory, {#blank#}1{#/blank#}was worth a few million dollars, to a fire. It had very little insurance. No longer a young man, Edison watched his lifetime effort {#blank#}2{#/blank#}(go) up in smoke and said, “There is great value in disasters. All our mistakes are burnt up. Thank God we can start anew.” In spite of disasters, three weeks later, {#blank#}3{#/blank#} invented the phonograph(留声机). What {#blank#}4{#/blank#} attitude!

    Thomas Edison failed {#blank#}6{#/blank#}(approximate) 10,000 times while he worked on the light bulb. Henry Ford fired Lee Iacocca {#blank#}7{#/blank#} the age of 54. Young Beethoven {#blank#}8{#/blank#}(tell) that he had no talent for music, {#blank#}9{#/blank#} he gave some of the best music to the world.

    Setbacks(挫折) are inevitable in life. A setback can act as a driving force and also teach us humility. In grief you will find the courage and faith {#blank#}10{#/blank#}(overcome) the setback.

    In the 17th century, dentists did their best {#blank#}1{#/blank#} (make) false teeth. The problem, however, was not making the teeth, {#blank#}2{#/blank#} was keeping them in place. They had to tie each tooth to the one on either side of it. Only rich people could afford false teeth, {#blank#}3{#/blank#} were usually made of gold or silver. As more and more people wanted new teeth, poor people {#blank#}4{#/blank#} (sell) their teeth to the rich so that they could buy food and clothing. During the next 200 years, many changes were made to false teeth although some of these were not really improvements. Towards the end of the 19th century, for example, cheap elastic teeth were introduced. But they caught fire very {#blank#}5{#/blank#} (easy), and a number of men were badly burned when their teeth caught fire while they were smoking {#blank#}6{#/blank#} (cigarette). Nowadays, false teeth {#blank#}7{#/blank#} (be) so well made and look so real that it is often {#blank#}8{#/blank#} (possible) to tell from a person's appearance whether or not they have them.     As Alison Gopnik described in her recent book, there are two kinds of parents in modern America: The Carpenter and the Gardener. The "carpenter" thinks that his or her child can{#blank#}1{#/blank#}(shape). "The idea is that if you just do the right things, get the right skills and read the right books, you're going to be able to turn your child {#blank#}2{#/blank#}a particular kind of adult，" she said

    The "gardener", however  is seldom concerned about {#blank#}3{#/blank#} (control) what the child will become and instead provides a protected space {#blank#}4{#/blank#}explore). The style is all about:" creating a rich, nutritious but also variable, diverse, active ecosystem".

    Gopnik, a psychology and philosophy professor at the University of California, Berkeley, said." Many parents are carpenters, and {#blank#}5{#/blank#}is really necessary for them to bring up their children." She spent decades researching children's development and finally {#blank#}6{#/blank#}(find) that parents often focused too much on what their children would be as adults. The harm is that parents and their children may become{#blank#}7{#/blank#} (anxiety), tense or unhappy.

    "We're so concerned about our children {#blank#}8{#/blank#} we think have difficulty mastering their own future that we're unwilling to allow them to {#blank#}9{#/blank#} (free) explore the world." she says. The truth is that the {#blank#}10{#/blank#} (little) that parents worry about outcomes, the better their children may live in life.
