Whether you're crossing one of the 342 bridges in the city, or just watching them being raised over the Neva River at night to allow ships to pass, you are never far from water in ST Petersburg. The Russian city has often been compared with Venice in Italy.
Last month ST Petersburg was voted Europe's best destination in this year's World Travel Awards.
Apart from its water, the city is also sure to wow visitors with its buildings. The huge Winter Palace, where the Russian Tsars (沙皇) used to live, is perhaps the city's most famous building. It can be seen all over Palace Square and the south bank of the Neva River, and has played "a central role in the political and cultural role in the 300-year history of the city", according to Saint-Petersburg.com. Kazan Cathedral (大教堂) is another well-known attraction, with its amazing painting of Our Lady of Kazan, an important religious figure in Russian, which believers line up to kiss.
ST Petersburg also stands out as "a museum city", as Russians call it. The Hermitage Museum, done of the largest and oldest museums in the world, is where visitors can see everything from Egyptian mummies (木乃伊) to Spanish artist Pablo Picasso's works. The State Russian Museum has the world's largest collection of Russian art.
As US travel website TripAdisor put it, the city of ST Petersburg offers "enough art and culture for many visits". Perhaps it will soon be time to make your first trip.
