Although most people believe that formal schooling is required for scientific success, a college degree is not always necessary.{#blank#}1{#/blank#}excellent example of a man who won fame as a scientist {#blank#}2{#/blank#}academic(学术的) training is Vincent J. Schaefer. His formal education ended {#blank#}3{#/blank#} two years of high school when he had to go to work in an untrained job at General Electric. Because {#blank#}4{#/blank#} his inventive mind and his skill as a model maker, he was soon allowed to try his own experiments in the company laboratory. His natural {#blank#}5{#/blank#} (curious) made him wonder about clouds. He developed, after many tries, a method of making clouds rain {#blank#}6{#/blank#}they would not normally do so. This method, {#blank#}7{#/blank#} (call) seeding, has been very  {#blank#}8{#/blank#} (help) to farmers, and {#blank#}9{#/blank#}made him win much fame.

    Schaefer believes that for people{#blank#}10{#/blank#}, most of all, are interested in the world and everything in it, a college degree is unnecessary.

Gift from A Stranger

My local supermarket is always busy. The first parking space I found was convenient. but I'd noticed a woman in a blue car circling for a while. {#blank#}1{#/blank#}I was in a good mood, I let her have it. On the edge of the car park I backed into the next available spot——it was a tight fit. Pretty soon I'd made my way through the supermarket and was back in the flesh air. {#blank#}2{#/blank#}(feel)good, I emptied my purse change into the hands of a homeless man and{#blank#}3{#/blank#}(help)a struggling woman reverse park.

    Just as I approached my car, I saw the woman I'd let have my car spot earlier. She was giving me {#blank#}4{#/blank#}odd look——half intent(热切的), half puzzled. I smiled and wished her a pleasant day. As I squeezed back into my car, I saw the same lady{#blank#}5{#/blank#}(look)in at me. "Hello, "she said, hesitantly. "This {#blank#}6{#/blank#}sound crazy but I was on my way to drop some of my mother's things off at the charity bins. You are just so much {#blank#}7{#/blank#}her. You helped those people, I noticed, and you seemed so happy. "She looked at me{#blank#}8{#/blank#}(meaning)and passed a box in through the window. "I think she would like you to have it. "{#blank#}9{#/blank#}(shock), I took it from her automatically. She smiled and walked away.

    After a pause. I opened the box. Inside was a beautiful gold necklace with a large grey pearl. It was the {#blank#}10{#/blank#}(nice)gift I'd ever received, and it was from a complete stranger. The necklace was around my neck, a warm reminder of human kindness.

    Elias was born in the 20th century when the black people were put in to a miserable position {#blank#}1{#/blank#}they had no rights at all. Elias, like most black people in South Africa, had little {#blank#}2{#/blank#}(educate)and was worried {#blank#}3{#/blank#} whether he would become out of work. This was the very reason {#blank#}4{#/blank#} he met Mandela. Mandela always encouraged him not to lose heart.

    At that time, black people had no rights of {#blank#}5{#/blank#} (vote). They couldn't get jobs they wanted. The parts of town in which they had to live were decided by white people. They were sent to the poor areas {#blank#}6{#/blank#}no one could grow food.

    Nelson Mandela organized the ANC Youth League to fight against the {#blank#}7{#/blank#}(govern). They first broke the law in a {#blank#}8{#/blank#} (peace) way.

    When it was not allowed, they decided to answer violence with violence. So Elias joined the ANC Youth League, helping Nelson Mandela blow up some government {#blank#}9{#/blank#} (build). Elias {#blank#}10{#/blank#} (strong) believed what he did would help them achieve their dream of making black and white people equal.

    There is a wonderful story about Jimmy Durante, {#blank#}1{#/blank#}is one of the great singers in the twentieth century. One day, when {#blank#}2{#/blank#}(ask)to be part of a show for some old World War II soldiers, Jimmy said he could afford only a few minutes and {#blank#}3{#/blank#}he would come if they wouldn't mind his singing one short song and immediately leaving for his next appointment. Of course, the show's director agreed happily.

    But when Jimmy got on stage, something {#blank#}4{#/blank#}(surprise) happened. He went through the short song and then stayed. The applause grew louder and louder and he kept staying. Pretty soon, he had been on stage{#blank#}5{#/blank#}fifteen, twenty, and then thirty minutes. One of his assistants behind the stage stopped him and said, “I thought you had to go after a few minutes. What happened?” Jimmy answered, “I did have to go, but I can show you the reason{#blank#}6{#/blank#} I stayed. You can see for yourself if you look at the front row.” In the front row {#blank#}7{#/blank#}(be) two men, both of {#blank#}8{#/blank#}had lost an arm in the war. {#blank#}9{#/blank#}had lost his right arm and the other had lost his left. Together, they were able to clap, and that was exactly{#blank#}10{#/blank#} they were doing, loudly and cheerfully.
