What do you read when you are travelling by train or bus? What are other people reading? Perhaps a woman sitting near you is reading a love story. A man is reading a serious biography(自传) about a president. And there's a student reading an English textbook.

What do their choices(选择) say about them? Do you think you can know them by what they are reading? I have got to tell you that your feelings of them may be quite wrong. The woman reading the love story could be a lawyer. She just wants a light read to take her mind off work. The man reading the biography wants you to think that he is very clever. The student reading the textbook isn't a student at all. She's an English teacher.

Publishers(出版商) know that some people care what they read on trains or buses and so they put out different types of covers. For example, books about Harry Potter have a cartoon cover for young readers and then another more serious cover for grown—ups.

So next time you are on a train, look around and see what other people are reading, but don't jump to any conclusions(结论). You will be wrong maybe.

Here is a sentence that you could say, “Don't judge(判断) a book by its cover”.

举一反三
“USA? Britain? Which country is better to study in?” We often hear such discussions. As China open its door, it is a dream for many Chinese students to study abroad. They want to learn about the outside world.
It's true that studying abroad can help students develop themselves. Their foreign language skills will be improved and it may be easier to find jobs.
But there are problems that should be considered. Language is the first. Students must spend a lot of time learning another language.
Students must also learn to live without parents' care and deal with all kinds of things they haven't to do before, like looking after themselves. There are reports about Chineses students abroad running into an ocean of difficulties and giving up finally. When they have to take care of themselves, it is hard for students to study well.
Finally, studying abroad brings a heavy burden to the family. For most Chinese parents, the cost of studying abroad is very high. But is it worth it?
We know that there are many famous people who have achieved success through their hard work in China. Liu Xiang is a good example. Once an American teacher invited him there, but he refused. He kept training hard with his Chinese teacher. He surprised the world when he won a gold medal at the Athens Olympic Games. So when you winder which country is better to study in, think it again.

What will the home of the future look like? A team of architects (建造师) in Hong Kong say that city homes will be tiny, as populations continue to grow and space becomes more expensive. They have designed “space flats”. 83它们只有30 平米大。These flats have three small rooms, a living room, a bathroom and a bedroom, as well as a balcony (阳台),but everything is carefully planned to make good use of the limited space.
The living room is the main room of the flat. It can be used as an office, a kitchen or even a second bedroom. There is a sofa that can be changed into a bed. The dining table can be changed into a computer desk. And, if not needed, both the sofa-bed and the table can be folded away and stored into a small apace in the wall. There is a flat-screen TV, which can also serve as a computer monitor. In one corner of the room, a small cooker, a microwave oven and a miniature refrigerator are hidden out of sight.
The other rooms are small but useful. The bathroom contains a toilet and a shower. The double bed in the bedroom can also be a sofa, if necessary, The balcony has enough room for two people to sit and enjoy the view from the block of flats. All the rooms have high ceiling to provide as much storage space as possible, while the flat has large windows to let in plenty of sunlight.
“Space flats “are now being tested in a building in Hong Kong. “It's wonderful,” said one resident(居民) “84. The flat is so well designed that you feel that there is plenty of space” .
