"May we all be blessed with longevity. Though miles apart, we are still able to share the beauty of the moon together(但愿人长久,千里共婵娟)."wrote Su Shi, a poet during the Song Dynasty, in his well-known poem to his younger brother Su Zhe.

The moon is at its brightest on the 15th day of the eighth month of the lunar calendar. On this day, people celebrate Mid-Autumn Festival. It has been enjoying great popularity all over the country.

In ancient China, that day was a harvest(收获) festival because crops(庄稼) were harvested during that period. It was also a time for relaxation and celebration.

Just like Thanksgiving in Western countries, families also try to get together for the Mid-Autumn Festival in China. Usually, no matter how far away or how busy they are, people will try to return home for the celebration.

The Mid-Autumn has its own special food just as other traditional Chinese holidays. People eat mooncakes with fillings such as sugar and eggs. The round shape of the cake makes it look like the full moon. The full moon and mooncakes stand for family reunion(团聚).

With the beautiful moon up in the sky, people sit together, enjoy the full moon, eat mooncakes and fruit, share the stories, and express the best wishes for the family members and friends who live afar.

Of all the Chinese 24 solar terms, Clear and Bright (清明) is the only one whose first day is also a traditional Chinese festival, the Qingming Festival. The words "clear" and "bright" describe the weather during this period. Temperatures begin to rise and rainfall increases, making it an important time for growing crops in the spring. As is known, it is a time to worship ancestors (祭拜祖先). However, here are some things you may not know about Clear and Bright. 

Spring Outings

Not only is it a period to honor the dead, but it is also time for people to go out and enjoy nature. As trees turn green, flowers come out, and the sun shines brightly, everything returns to life. It is a fine time to enjoy the beauty of nature. 

Flying Kites

Flying kites is an activity loved by many Chinese during Tomb-Sweeping Day. Kites are not only flown during the day time but also in the evening. Little lanterns are tied to the kites. And when the kites are flying in the sky, the lanterns look like twinkling stars at night. What makes flying kites during this day special is that people cut the string while the kite is in the sky to let it fly freely. It is said that this brings good luck and that diseases can be driven away by doing this. 

Cuju

Cuju is an interesting game played during this period. Ju is a ball made of leather with hairs in it. It is said that the Yellow Emperor first invented it for training warriors. Later, Cuju was used by people to build up their bodies when they were unable to eat hot food during the Cold Food Festival. 

Qingtuan

In the lower parts of the Yangtze River region, qingtuan is very popular on Tomb-Sweeping Day. Qingtuan is a kind of round green cake. In order to make the cakes, people mash (捣碎) barnyard grass (艾草) to squeeze juice from it and mix the flour and juice to a paste. Then they put fillings into the paste and steam them. Pretty and delicate, qingtuan tastes special. 

Do you believe that there are some plants that eat meat? Some of them are big and can eat small animals. The venus flytrap(捕蝇草) is a famous one. 

The venus flytrap is {#blank#}1{#/blank#} very strange plant. It mainly {#blank#}2{#/blank#}(grow) in dry parts of the US. Its {#blank#}3{#/blank#}(leaf) are like the pages of a book. They can open {#blank#}4{#/blank#} close very quickly. There are some small hairs inside the leaves. If a fly touches one of the hairs, the leaf will close {#blank#}5{#/blank#}(sudden). Then the fly cannot get out. In about half an hour, the leaf will press(压) the fly until it is {#blank#}6{#/blank#}(die). Slowly, the plant {#blank#}7{#/blank#}(eat) the fly. 

Why do plants do it? Most plants get what they need {#blank#}8{#/blank#} the sun, the air and the ground. In some {#blank#}9{#/blank#}(place), the ground is very poor. It can't provide some important things, especially nitrogen(氮). So some plants in these areas eat meat {#blank#}10{#/blank#}(get) this. This is what they need, too. 

Paper cutting is one of the most popular traditions in China. It is popular among Chinese people because it is cheap and easy to make. Paper cutting is cutting paper with scissors {#blank#}1{#/blank#} knives. Chinese people like red, so paper cuttings are often red. We believe they can bring us happiness and make us {#blank#}2{#/blank#}. People use paper cutting to express their wishes for important days.
