He said that it all came  from an experience with his mother that happened when he was two years old. He tried to carry a bottle of milk form the refrigerator. But tried to carry a bottle of milk sprinkled all over the kitchen floor.
When his mother came into the kitchen, instead of complaining about it ,she said , “Robert, what a of complaining about it ,she said, “Robert, what a great and wonderful mess you have made! Well, the terrible thing has already been done . Would you like to get down and play in the milk form a few minutes before we clean it up?”
Indeed, he did. After a few minutes , his mother said ,”You know , Robert , whenever you make a mess like this , you have to clean it up . We could use a sponge or a towel. Which do you prefer?” He chose the sponge and together they cleaned up the milk.
His mother. then said, “You know , what we have here is a failed experiment in how to carry a big milk bottle with two small hands .Let's go out in the back yard and fill the bottle with water and see if you can discover a way to carry it without dropping it “  The little boy learned that if he held the bottle at the op near the lip(容器的嘴)with both hands, he could carry it without dropping it What a wonderful lesson! At that moment he knew that he didn't need to be afraid to make mistakes and mistakes were just opportunities for learning something new.

“My dear lady,” says Holmes. “You're shivering. Are you old? Do you want a cup of hot tea?”
“I'm not cold,” the woman replies, “I fear for my life!”
“We are here to help you. Don't worry about anything. I don't know you. But I know many things about you. For example, I know how you travel. You came to London by train. You also ride to the train station on a horse-drawn wagon(马车).”
“Why, yes. You're right. But how do you know these things?”
“ I see a return ticket in your glove. I see fresh mud on the left arm of your dress. Now tell us your problem.”
“My name is Helen Stoner,” she states, “ My mother and father are dead. I am living with my stepfather, Dr Grimesby Roylott. He comes from a rich family. But they are no longer rich. They have nothing except a small piece of land and a huge old house. We are living in the house. Dr Roylott is using my mother's money for expenses(开支). Part of it was for my sister and me. It was for our marriages.”
Holmes is sitting in his chair. His eyes are closed. He is listening carefully to Helen's story. He hears every detail.
Helen continues. “My stepfather has no friends. He fights with everyone. He is strong and gets angry quickly. Everyone is afraid of him.”
“He has no friends at all?” asks Holmes.
“No. He talks to no one except the gypsies. They are poor people who travel from place to place. A band of gypsies is staying on our land right now.”
“Are you and your sister afraid of the gypsies?”
“My dear Mr Holmes. You are making me so sad. My sister is dead. That is why I am standing here in this room.”

It was the summer before my third grade. Our girls' softball(垒球) team was facing real pitchers(投球手)1 the first time. Before that, we could just hit the ball on the tee (球座). When the coach started pitching, hitting became 2 for me. I missed every single pitch. From the side, I heard my teammate Emily laughing at 3 . My face turned red. At that moment, I was starting to 4 playing softball.

The next afternoon, when Mum said it was time to play the game, I told her I was 5 . She allowed me to rest for a while. So I went to my room and 6 myself in bed. This was difficult for me because I was OK and just 7 to keep away from softball.

Soon Mum came in and said, "Time to go!" She didn't even ask if I felt 8 . I imagined Emily laughing at me, and 9 I really did feel sick to my stomach. I began crying loudly. Still, Mum pulled my team T-shirt over my head. She said, "You have to 10 for the rest of the season, and only after that can we talk about 11 you'll go on next year." She added that practice was what I needed, not 12 . She promised to practise with me.

I got two hits that afternoon, and Emily didn't make a 13 . Every week after that, I practised at home 14 I got to be one of the best hitters on the team.

That 15 taught me being afraid is part of life, and I can do whatever is expected of me if I keep working and practising.

A: Choose the best answer(根据短文内容,选择最正确的答案)

There is nothing like chocolate. Just thinking about it can make your mouth water. September 13 is the International Chocolate Day, which gives us a good reason to celebrate the world's most popular sweet.

Chocolate comes from a civilization(文明)called the Maya. They had a special food called cocoa. The word cocoa means" gift from God". About five hundred years ago, the Europeans found the Mayans and used cocoa to make chocolate.

For centuries, only the rich could enjoy chocolate, and normal people could not get hold of it. All this changed when European companies started to produce chocolate bars in the 19th century. Chocolate comes in different colors and sizes. People often eat white, dark and milk chocolate. The biggest chocolate bar was ever made in Italy in 2011 and weighed almost 6 tons! That's as big as an elephant.

There are also different shapes of chocolate and people often take them as holiday gifts. Chocolate bunnies(小兔子)and eggs are popular on Easter, chocolate coins are common on Christmas Day, and chocolate hearts are great gifts for Valentine's Day. At certain parties and wedding ceremonies(结婚典礼), chocolate fountains always surprise guests.

Lots of people say chocolate is bad for your health. Not necessarily so! Scientists now say it is good for people's heart and can make the body release chemicals that actually make us happy and make us feel better. But don't eat too much of it.
