On my thirteenth birthday, my father gives me a special present. It is a little bird, cute and colorful. She is not that 1 at first, but she then becomes a sweet part of my life. I look forward every day to playing with her. She means a lot to me, 2 a family member*. 

One day, she seems not quite herself and struggles* to fly. Dad tells me the vet* can surely make 3 better. So I bring the bird there, hoping she will be healthy soon. 4 she is more badly ill* than we can think. 

A few days later, comes the bad news and there is 5 we can do for her. At that moment, I know I 6 her and I can't stop crying. I cry all the way to collect her little body. When I walk into the vet, I see a woman with a little girl. After a short talk, it is clear why they are here. They lose their lovely dog. 

Then the vet brings my little bird and places it on the desk. I 7 . the body of my love with much sadness. When I turn around to leave, I am surprised to see that there is the 8 ,standing in front of me. She looks at me in the eyes 9 and asks me: 

"Do you want a hug*?" 

"Yes, that's what I need now." 

So, little girl, thank you for bringing the 10 to me which warms my heart. Just remember, we are never "little" to anyone. 

There once lived a bird and her two new- born babies in a forest. One day, there was a big storm. There was thunder lightning and rain and the wind blew down many trees. The tall tree in which the birds lived also came down. A big, heavy branch hit the nest and killed the mother bird. Fortunately for the baby birds, the strong wind blew them away to the other side of the forest. One of them came down near a cave where a gang of robbers(强盗) lived. The other landed outside a wise man's ashrama little distance away.

Days passed and the baby birds became big birds. One day, the king of the country came to the forest to hunt. He saw a deer and rode after it. It ran deep into the forest followed by the king. Soon the king lost his way.

He rode on for a long time till he came to the other side of the forest. Very tired by now, he got off his horse and sat down under a tree that stood near a cave. Suddenly he heard a voice cry out," Ouick! Hurry up! There's someone under the tree. Come and take his jewels and his horse. Hurry or else he'll slip away." The king was amazed. He looked up and saw a big, brown bird on the tree under which he was sitting. He also heard faint noises coming from the cave. He quickly got on to his horse and rode away as fast as he could.

Soon, he came to a clearing which looked like an ashram. It was the wise man's ashram. The king tied his horse to a tree and sat down. Suddenly he heard a gentle voice announce," Welcome, Sir. Please go inside and rest. The host will be back soon. Come and make yourself comfortable." The king looked up and saw a big, brown bird. He was amazed." This one looks like the other bird outside the cave," he said to himself.

Later the wise man came back." Welcome, Sir," he said to the king." Please come inside. You look tired. Rest for a while. Then you can share my food."

The king told the wise man the story of the two birds and how each had behaved so differently though they looked so alike." The forest is full of surprises," he said.

The wise man smiled and said," After all, one is known by the company one keeps.    That bird has always heard the talk of robbers. He talks about robbing people. This one has repeated what he has always heard. He welcomes people to the ashram."

 An old saying goes," When in Rome(罗马), do as the Romans do."I learned the meaning of this when I studied in Russia.

 One day I {#blank#}1{#/blank#}( invite) some of my Chinese friends to a famous local restaurant in Moscow. My guests and I were so excited from visiting Red Square {#blank#}2{#/blank#} we talked loudly. We had a warm chat until the waiter told me that we were being too loud. We turned our voices a little {#blank#}3{#/blank#}( low). But this didn't last long. The waiter came over to us two more times with {#blank#}4{#/blank#} same message.

{#blank#}5{#/blank#} bad an impression(印象) we must have left on the local people! In China, it's natural and important for a host {#blank#}6{#/blank#} make) a lively atmosphere(气氛). However, in Russia and western countries, having a meal in a public place means you must keep your voice low. You need to be polite to others.

I felt bad about this. Even though we tried our best, it's very difficult to {#blank#}7{#/blank#} ( quick) develop a new habit.

 Russians have {#blank#}8{#/blank#}( they) own special habits. My Russian friend, Andrey always looks around and thinks for a while before leaving home. I asked him {#blank#}9{#/blank#} he did this." Aha," Andrey said," In Russia, people always take about a minute to think about things and plans in the mind before leaving. So they won't leave anything necessary behind."

 Finding some {#blank#}10{#/blank#}( different) between cultures is much fun. I'd like to keep my eyes and mind open.

This morning, I went camping along a path in Green Natural Park with my friends. We were happy because it was a sunny day. We were expecting an enjoyable two- day holiday. On the way, we kept singing and making jokes. 

However, in the afternoon, when we finished our picnic at one o'clock, it was dark and windy.  Soon there was a shower. Unluckily, none of us brought an umbrella. We ran about but we could find no place to hide. 

Twenty minutes passed and it was still raining. There were hours to go before we could reach the campsite (野营地). It was even worse that our small compass showed that we went the wrong way. We lost our way!

We had to make a quick decision as it was raining heavily. Chris said we could set up a tent to hide in, so Mary and Tom helped to set up the tent. Chris and I tried to make a fire to keep us warm. But we were unable to light the fire,  ▲ . We dried ourselves, chatted and waited inside the tent. At about five o'clock, it stopped raining. We decided to give up the camping trip because all of us were very tired. 

This camping trip may not be very successful but we have got to know each other better. And the most important thing I've learned from this trip is the importance of teamwork. 

Stunt (特技) actors work in movies and television shows. They always take the real actors' places to do some dangerous actions. Circus (戏团) performers work just as hard as they could, because they also want to be the stars of the show. 

Stunt actors must be strong. Many of them start doing this from martial arts (武术) and learn many other things such as horse riding and driving. Some become good at one thing, such as stunt driving. They try to make their performances look real, just like real actors do that. 

Stunt actors work wherever movies or television shows are made. As we all know, Hollywood is the most famous film city of the world. And there are also other places working with movies or television shows, such as Vancouver in Canada and Queensland in Australia. Also, they often work in forests and mountains. Stunt actors left home to work for weeks or even months. 

Circus life is also busy. Performers need to be strong and flexible (灵活的). Circus performers are not shy people and they enjoy being the center of the whole performance. 

Many circus performers travel from town to town. They stay for a week, and then move on. And some performers even have no home. They live in large cars and go everywhere to perform. Circus families often travel together. The children perform with their parents sometimes. Circus children don't go to school. They study by the teachers' letters, or study with a teacher who travels with them.
