There are some differences between American English and British English. Some differences are quite interesting.

When my friend Lily from London used the word "larder", I didn't know what it meant. Realizing I didn't follow her, she used another word. I finally knew she wanted to find something to keep some food. The next word came up when we were planning a lunch date. She jotted down the date and time in her diary, while I wrote it down on my calendar. If she called me on the phone, she would ring me up. But if the line was busy, she would say the line was engaged. She once told me a funny story about a pissed woman. I wondered what had made the lady angry. It turns out that pissed means drunk.

Most times, I could understand what Lily meant until last week I read a message written from Lily to me. I found out the British really like the letter"u"and have kept it in many words. However, we Americans have dropped it. Somewhere in our language history, we decided that "neighbor", "color" and "favorite" were just fine without "u" next to the "o".

Here is one more example. While I was in London for the first time last year, I lost my watch. When I asked my British friend what time it was, he said aloud as "a quarter to seven", which made me speechless and lost in thought. After a few seconds, I finally realized it was "six forty-five". Equally, 6:15 for us is translated as "six fifteen", while the British would say "a quarter past six". Although the differences between American and British English sometimes make me confused（困惑的）, it's really fun to explore more of them from my own experience.

Many families find it useful to write down some rules about what {#blank#}1{#/blank#}(青少年), who are between thirteen and nineteen years old, are expected to do. In this {#blank#}2{#/blank#} (时期), every teenager should know what is or isn't allowed. The rules can be stuck on the fridge. In that way, younger children can have a {#blank#}3{#/blank#}(机会) to read them.

In order to realize it, there are more ways. For example, teenagers can stick the rules on the wall of their bedrooms.

When to start making rules

You can start to make {#blank#}4{#/blank#}(宝贵) rules as soon as your child has the language skills to understand them. Young children will need parents' {#blank#}5{#/blank#}(支持) to follow rules. They need help to understand and remember rules. You can give your child a {#blank#}6{#/blank#}(拥抱) when he or she does well.

Teenagers and rules

Rules about safety are helpful to teenagers. For example, you can {#blank#}7{#/blank#}(教育) your child that anyone without a driver's license should not drive a car. Besides, teenagers shouldn't {#blank#}8{#/blank#}(抽烟). It is {#blank#}9{#/blank#} (很坏) for their health. They shouldn't wear strange earrings by piercing their ears excessively(过度地). You should {#blank#}10{#/blank#} (表达) clearly that what they can or can't do.

Are you able to hang (悬挂) clothes? Are you able to put a nail (钉子) into the wall? For many people, doing these things is quite easy. But how do people who have trouble using their hands do these things? Well, they can use artificial (人造的) hands to help them out.

In Suzhou, some engineers are busy making a special hand better. The special hand is helpful and people can control it with the electrical signals (电信号) which come from their bodies.

These engineers hope to make it much better for Xu Min, who lost her right forearm in an accident in 1992. The woman wore the hand to take part in the Cybathlon Challenges in February. She finished tasks like hanging clothes, putting a nail into the wall and taking a nail out of the wall.

"These things are common in our daily lives and people want to test if the special hand, which was created by humans, can work just like a real hand," Xu said. Because she won the competition (比赛) in February, she was more confident about entering the October global finals — Cybathlon2024 in Zurich, Switzerland.

Cybathlon is the top event in the area. The event was first held in 2016. It takes place every four years. The competition tries to create a world without difficulty for people like Xu. In October, the competition will draw many teams from across the world.

Xu was a little nervous about competing with other people and companies from her country and other places. However, she and her team wanted to show their new product and how humans and machines could work together. Xu said she couldn't wait to get the hand ready and start the training.

The Tiaohua Festival is a main festival of the Miao people in Anshun City in Guizhou Province. Each year，the Tiaohua Festival attracts international tourists from all over the world. In 2008，it was included into the second batch of National Intangible Cultural Heritage List(第二批国家级非物质文化遗产名录). It is usually celebrated in the first lunar month every year. 

To decide the exact date of the festival，organizers have to think about many things，like lucky animal days(e. g. the tiger and dragon days are powerful，but the snake and pig days need to be avoided at all costs) and lucky numbers(e. g. "8" means rich but "4" means death). Organizers also need to make sure the date doesn't fall on the festival days of other communities. In this way，people from nearby villages can take part in the festival. 

Singing and dancing are the main activities of the Tiaohua Festival. During the festival，the Miao people wear their traditional clothes and silver accessories(配饰). The most important part of the festival is the chance for young people to meet possible marriage partners—men play a musical instrument and women dance to the music in the flower area. If a man plays well，listeners will cheer for him and he can win a woman's admiration. Then they may get married if everything goes well. Other activities include competitions of climbing a flower­decorated pole and the martial art.
