    A man came home from work late，tired and irritated（不耐烦的）, to find his 5-year-old son waiting for him at the door.

    “Daddy, may I ask you a question?”

    “Yeah sure, what is it?” replied the man.

    “Daddy, how much do you make an hour?”

    “That's none of your business. Why do you ask such a thing?” the man said angrily.

    “I just want to know. Please tell me，how much do you make an hour?” pleaded the little boy.

    “If you must know, I make $20 an hour.”

    “Oh,” the little boy replied, with his head down. Looking up, he said, “Daddy, may I please borrow $10?”

    The father was angry, “If the only reason you asked that is so you can borrow some money to buy a silly toy or some other nonsense, then you march yourself straight to your room and go to bed. Think about why you are being so selfish. I work hard every day for such childish behavior.” The little boy quietly went to his room and shut the door. The man sat down and, started to get even angrier about the little boy's questions. How dare he ask such questions only to get some money? After about an hour or so, the man had calmed down, and started to think: Maybe there was something he really needed to buy with that $10 and he really didn't ask for money very often. The man went to the door of the little boy's room and opened the door. “Are you asleep, son?” He asked.

    “No, daddy, I'm awake,” replied the boy.

    “I've been thinking, maybe I was too hard on you earlier,” said the man. “It's been a long day and I took out my anger on you. Here's the $10 you asked for.”

    The little boy sat straight up, smiling. “Oh. Thank you, daddy!” He yelled. Then, reaching under his pillow he pulled out some crumpled(皱皱巴巴的) up bills.

Jack took a long look at his speedometer (车速表) before slowing down: 73 in a 55 zone. Fourth time in as many months. How could a man get caught so often?

The policeman was stepping out of his car, the big pad in his hand.

Bob? Bob from church? Jack sank farther into his coat. This was worse than the coming ticket. A policeman catching a man from his own church. A man who happened to be a little eager to get home after a long day at the office.

Jumping out of the car, he approached the man he saw every Sunday, a man he'd never seen in uniform. "Hi, Bob. Fancy meeting you like this." "Hello, Jack." No smile. "Guess you caught me red-handed in a rush to see my wife and kids." "Yeah, I guess." Bob seemed uncertain. Good.

"I've seen some long days at the office lately. I'm afraid I bent the rules a bit — just this once." Jack toed at a stone on the pavement. "Diane said something about roast beef and potatoes tonight. Know what I mean?"

"I know what you mean. I also know that you have a reputation in our neighborhood." Ouch. This was not going in the right direction.

"What did you clock me at?" "Seventy. Would you sit back in your car please?" "Now wait a minute here, Bob. I checked as soon as I saw you. I was merely 65." The lie seemed to come easier with every ticket.

"Please, Jack, in the car." Anxious, Jack ducked through the still-open door. Banging the door, he stared at the dashboard (仪表盘). The minutes ticked by. Bob wrote something on the pad. Why hadn't he asked for a driver's license?

Whatever the reason, it would be a month of Sundays before Jack ever sat near this policeman again.

George Ellet had a bright silver dollar from his mother for a New-year gift. He thought of all the fine things he might buy with it.

The ground was all covered with snow; but the sun shone out bright, and everything looked beautiful. So George put on his hat and ran into the street. As he went skipping along, he met some boys throwing snowballs. George soon engaged in the sport.

He sent a ball at James Mason, but it missed him, and broke a window on the other side of the street. George feared someone would come out of the house and find him. So he ran off as fast as he could.

As soon as he got round the next corner, George stopped, because he was very sorry for what he had done. He said to himself, "I have no right to spend my silver dollar now. I ought to go back, and pay for the glass I broke with my snowball."

He went up and down the street and felt very sad.

My mom only had one eye. I hated her. She was such an embarrassment. She ran a small shop at a flea market and collected old clothes and some other things to sell for the money we needed. 

Once during elementary school, it was a field day, and my mom came. I was so embarrassed and wondered how she could do this to me? I was so angry with my mom and wished that she would just disappear from this world. So I said to my mom, "Why don't you have the other eye?! If you're only gonna make me a laughingstock!" My mom did not respond, I guess I felt. a little. bad, but at the same time, I felt so good to have said what I wanted to say. 

I hated my one-eyed mom and our desperate poverty. I told myself that I would become successful in the near future, so I studied very hard. Later I got accepted by the Seoul University. I left my mother and came to Seoul to study. Then I got married there. I bought a house of my own. Then I had kids, too. I enjoy the life in Seoul because it's a place that doesn't remind me of my mom and my past. 

This kind of happiness was getting bigger and bigger, until one day someone knocked at my door. It was my mom! And still with her one eye! It felt as if the whole sky was falling apart on me. My little girl ran away, scared of my mom's eye. I screamed at her, "Who are you? I don't know you! How dare you come to my house and scare my daughter!" To this, my mom quietly answered, "Oh, I'm so sorry. I may have gotten the wrong address," and she disappeared out of sight. 

One day, a letter regarding a school reunion came to my house. After the reunion, I went down to my old house, just out of curiosity. There I found my mom fallen on the cold ground. I did not shed a single tear. 

Then a piece of paper in her hand came into my eyes. It was a letter to me.
