    Ms. Li, our English teacher, must have found it strange on Teachers' Day; she did not receive a single greeting card from us students. She would have never thought a complete surprise was waiting for her.

    There was a problem with the parking place for bikes in our school.

    Ten-year-old Sami loved to visit his grandfather's house. The house was near the beautiful blue sea. At the seaside stood thick and tall palm trees with green coconuts hanging from them. When the coconuts fell down, Sami would break them open and drink the coconut water. Sami liked to play under the trees. It was always great fun to spend the holidays at Grandpa's place.

    This winter vacation, Sami was surprised when he came to his grandfather's village. There were hardly any trees left. He saw houses built near the sea. People had cut down many palm trees and there was hardly any greenery left.

    Grandpa's house was different. He never allowed his trees to be cut. He hugged each palm tree in his courtyard. He also named the two big trees near the front door--one was Petu, and the other Betu. He had planted them with his own hands and today they had become large, massive trees with thick trunks. They were tall and green and gave the sweetest, juiciest coconuts.

    One night, Sami was awakened by a strange sound. He could not sleep. He tossed（辗转）and turned in bed. Suddenly, the ground shook as if the earth was splitting. He sat up straight and then ran to Grandpa. He clung（附着）to his grandpa tightly. Grandpa cried out, “It's an earthquake! It's an earthquake!" They ran outside the house. They thought that would be safe.

    Suddenly, there was a loud sound; the earth was not splitting but the sea was roaring. People were shouting, screaming and crying, “The sea is rising! The sea is rising." The villagers started running away from the beach. Sami watched dumbstruck（呆若木鸡）.

    The waves were rising higher and higher. Sami thought, “How big the waves are!" He went into the house again and saw water coming in from all sides. He was scared.

    Sami remembered his mother telling him long ago, “You must always get out of the house if the floods come too near." He ran outside the house with Grandpa. But the water came surging（汹涌） in.

    Waves about twelve meters high came rushing in, drowning everything. Water was all around and everywhere.

    On a sunny day s shepherd (牧羊人) walked with his two hungry sheep along a winding country path. He managed to have them two tied to each other just in case they should go separated. It was quite a long time before they arrived at a place where there was merely a small amount of fresh grass on each side of the path. Both of the sheep were so hungry that they hurried to the grass but in the separated direction as the picture showed. Unfortunately the rope fastening them was not long enough. No matter how hard they struggled, neither was able to reach the grass in front of them.

    The shepherd was about to help them when he was surprised to find that one of them should voluntarily abandon the struggle, and went along with the other. Consequently, together the two sheep enjoyed the fresh grass on one side happily, and then the grass on the other.

Jenny and Lisa are close friends. They're studying in high school now.

One day about half a year ago, Jenny went to Lisa's house after she finished her homework. After entering Lisa's home, Jenny found that Lisa was chatting on her cellphone. Jenny was surprised as she didn't know Lisa had gone downtown to buy a cellphone.

After Lisa finished talking over the cellphone, Jenny asked her, "When did you get your cellphone?"

"I bought it yesterday. Look! How lovely it looks!" said Lisa.

Jenny looked at the cellphone. It was pink and looked really lovely. Jenny wished she also, could have such a cellphone.

That day, after Jenny came back home, she saw her father sitting on the sofa reading a newspaper. Jenny approached him and said, "Dad, could I have a cellphone? Many of my classmates have their own cellphones now."

"Of course, you can have one," said Jenny's father. Hearing that, Jenny became very happy.

"Thank you, Dad," Jenny said happily. Then she asked, "When shall we go downtown to buy one?"

The father looked up hearing that. Then he said, "Oh, no, dear! I'm not going to buy you a cell-phone. If you really want one, you should make money to buy one yourself."

Jenny immediately became upset. But she knew her father was serious. She walked away and went to her own room.

The following day, Jenny went to school as usual. When Lisa saw her at school, she looked a bit upset. Lisa came to her and asked why she was wearing a long face that day. Jenny said, "I asked my dad to buy a cellphone for me, but he said I should work for one myself."

But Lisa didn't seem to be surprised at all, and she said, "Don't get surprised, because that's how I bought my own cellphone."

Hearing that, Jenny remembered Lisa once told her she was helping look after the Smiths' one-year-old son in the past summer. Now she knew why she worked part-time that summer. Lisa wanted a new cellphone and she worked to make money for it.

Once, when I was a teenager, my father and I were standing in line to buy tickets for the circus (马戏). Finally, there was only one family between us and the ticket counter.

This family made a big impression on me. There were eight children, all probably under the age of twelve. You could tell they didn't have a lot of money.

Their clothes were not expensive, but they were clean. The children were wellbehaved, all of them standing in line, twobytwo behind their parents, holding hands. They were excitedly talking about the clowns, elephants, and other acts they would see that night with their brothers or sisters in a low voice.

One could sense they had never been to the circus before. It promised to be highlight of their young lives. The father and mother were at the head of the pack, standing proud as could be. The mother was holding her husband's hand, looking up at him as if to say, "You are my knight in shining armor."

He was smiling and responding in pride, looking back at her as if to say, "You got that right." The ticket lady asked the father how many tickets he wanted. He proudly responded, "Please let me buy eight children's tickets and two adult tickets so I can take my family to the circus."

The ticket lady gave the price. The man's wife let go of his hand. Her head dropped, and his lips began to shake. The father leaned a little closer and asked, "How much did you say？"

The ticket lady again quoted the price. The man didn't have enough money.

How was he supposed to turn and tell his eight children that he didn't have enough money to take them to the circus？Actually we were not wealthy in any sense. So I understand how the kids would feel. I felt sorry for them.
