Harry and Annie live a mile from the town, but they walk there to school every day. It is a pleasant walk around the pond* on their way to school. In winter, when the ice is thick and hard, they go across the pond. But their mother doesn't like them to do it unless* someone is with them.

"Don't go across the po nd today, children,"she says, as she kisses them goodbye one morning."It is    beginning to thaw."

"All right, mother,"says Harry, not very happy, for he likes running and skating on the ice very much.

When they come to the pond, the ice looks hard and safe.

"There,"Harry says to his sister,"Let's skate over it."

"But you promise mother,"says Annie.

"No, I don't. I only say‘All right', and it is all right."

"I don't say anything, so I can do as I like,"says Annie.

So they step on the ice and start to go across the pond.

They don't go far before the ice melts*, and suddenly they fall into the water.

A man who is at work near the po nd hears the children asking for help and rushes into the water to save them. They are almost drowned * before the man can reach them.

They get home almost frozen* and learn a lesson they will remember for a lifetime.

As a kind of traditional Chinese dress, Ma Mian Qun (horse face skirt) first appeared in the Song Dynasty and grew popular during the Ming Dynasty. The two sides of Ma Mian Qun are pleated (起褶的), and there is a smooth part in the middle, commonly known as "Ma Mian".

Why is it called "Ma Mian"? In fact, "Ma Mian" is a kind of structure used for protection in the city wall system. However, all the books about Ma Mian Qun only show that the smooth surface without pleats in the middle is called "Ma Mian". But there is no further explanation of how Ma Mian Qun got its name.

Recently, Ma Mian Qun has become a popular form of skirt for Hanfu fans. More and more modern fashion designers find ideas from Ma Mian Qun. For example, some get ideas from the patterns. Some connect the styles of Ma Mian Qun with T-shirts or blouses, which are more suitable for everyday wear. Even western fashion has been influenced by Ma Mian Oun for many years.

On February 9th, 2013, Sarah Darling was walking along the street when she met a homeless man named Billy Ray Harris. She reached into her purse, emptied out all the coins she had and gave them to the homeless man. Neither of them realized that this small act would change their lives. 

Sarah didn't realize that she had given Billy not only all her change but also her diamond ring (钻戒) that she had put in her purse earlier until the following morning. She and her husband, Bill Krejci, rushed to see if they could find Billy. The homeless man was not only in the same place, he also immediately returned the ring. The grateful couple paid him back for his honesty by emptying out their pockets of all the money they had. 

Bill Krejci, a web designer, felt that he needed to do something more for this honest man. So on February 18th, he set up a special page to raise money for him. In just four days, Billy received over $85, 000 and there seems to be no end yet. 

That is not enough. Billy is living with a person who is generous (慷慨的) instead of living in the streets. And that's not all—thanks to the news report, he got together again with his older brother, Edwin Harris, who he had been unable to find for 27 years. 

All the good luck is just because Billy did the right thing—returning something that did not belong to him.

What are deserts like?

 Deserts can be hot and dry places. Rain may not fall there for months or years. Some deserts are sandy and stony. Deserts can also be very wind y places. The wind can change the shape of the deserts. It moves sand around from place to place.

 Temperatures in the desert can vary greatly. During the daytime, the temperature may reach 40℃ even in the shade. At night, deserts can become very cold. In winter, there may even be a frost early in the morning.

Living in the desert

 The camel is sometimes called" the ship of the desert". It stores food in its hump and can go for days without water. It has large feet which help it not to fall into the soft sand. Its long eyelashes keep out the sand during sandstorms.

 An oasis(绿洲) is an area of the desert where water may be found. People and animals visit an oasis for water and food. Plants grow at an oasis. Some farmers are able to grow crops here.

The Arabian Desert

 The Arabian Desert lies between the Red Sea and the Arabian Gulf. Oil under parts of the desert has made some countries in the area very rich. The government has spent money building fine cities with lovely parks and lakes, and people live a comfortable life there.

Primary school students in Changsha, Hunan Province, have started to learn the Changsha dialect (方言) in a course for them to choose which was newly offered this term. 

More than 20 third-grade students from a local primary school have signed up for the course. Many language professors at some major universities in Hunan are teaching it. 

Besides the skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing, students will also get knowledge about the idioms, nursery rhymes (童谣) , figures of speech and culture behind the dialect, according to Luo Xinru, Chinese language professor at Hunan Normal University and one of the teachers of the course. 

As our country has spent a lot of energy promoting standard Mandarin (标准普通话) , lots of young children have not learned how to speak local dialects, she said. That's why the country has started to protect different language resources in recent years, she added. 

The Ministry of Education carried out the National Language Resource Protection Project in 2015 to do some surveys and better protect its language resources. Our country has set up the largest language resource center in the world, according to the ministry. 

Luo said promoting Mandarin and using dialects are not contradictory and children have the ability to speak them at the same time. 

"Dialect protection is very important and different dialects which carry different cultures and values should not and will not disappear," she said. "We do not expect all children taking the course to learn perfect Changsha dialect, but they should understand the importance of different dialects and perhaps be willing to dive into the research and protection of them as they grow older."

Which would you give a boy for his birthday, a toy truck or a doll? If you choose the truck, well,you're not alone. Most people think that some toys are for boys and some are for girls. We might pick building toys or remote-control cars for boys and kitchen toys or dolls for girls. But why do we do this?Are boys and girls really born with different interests in toys?

However, this rule can be bad for children. Different toys teach children different things. Dolls help with their early language use, and building toys are good for learning math and science. By playing with different toys, children can find out what they are interested in or what they are good at.

If they only play one kind of toy, they may lose this important chance. They may also get a wrong idea about what boys or girls are able to do. Some doctors worry that children may use the same kind of thinking when they look for jobs in the future. If they do, they may miss something more important than just getting a chance to play with different toys. They may miss many, perhaps better, chances in life.
