Nadia Clarke, Seventeen-year-old,talks about her African experience.

Last summer I got the chance to spend a month helping out in a hospital in Africa. I had one year left at school, and I was interested in studying medicine at university. I thought it was the perfect chance to get some experience and to see if I really wanted to be a doctor.

It was a month that changed my life. I saw a world and it is very different to mine in so many ways. I was surprised at how poor so many of the families were there and how difficult their lives could be. But I was also surprised at how actively people face their everyday lives. The way they came together and helped each other touched me a lot, and I think a lot of us here in the UK have forgotten it. I think many of us don't get to know how lucky we are.

My work in the hospital was hard. I spent a lot of time cleaning floors and taking temperatures, and I also got to spend some time giving medicine. And I got the chance to talk to some doctors and ask them about their work. I saw some truly awful things in the hospital, but none of them changed my mind about being a doctor. In fact, they only made me more certain to do medicine!

When I finish, I know clearly what I'm going to do: I want to work for an international group like the Red Cross and spend my life helping people all over the world. I can't wait to get started.

When thinking of the Arctic (北冰洋), some people may imagine an icy land of white snow. And other people may imagine it as the last really clean place left on Earth. In fact, we have polluted the deepest oceans with plastic rubbish, and now, CNN says, "It's the Arctic's turn."

German scientists have recently found microplastics in Arctic snow. Microplastics are pieces of plastic smaller than 5 millimeters. Sadly, the scientists found 1,800 pieces of microplastics per liter (升) of snow. That may cause terrible air pollution. 

How is plastic pollution reaching the Arctic? According to scientists, "It's clear that most of the microplastics in the snow come from the air. They fall off plastic objects and are moved by the wind. They mix with ice in the air and fall to the ground as snow."

Are they bad for us? We do know that our bodies cannot take in "large" pieces of microplastics. However, if the plastics are small enough, they can find ways into our bodies and stay there for a long time, which can be bad for our health. What's more, earlier studies have shown that microplastics may contribute to lung (肺) cancer risk. 

Microplastics have also been found in rivers and oceans around the world. Research has found that they flow over long distances and into our oceans, damaging (损坏) ecosystems along the way. When we wash clothes with plastic fibers (纤维), they start in our wastewater. The wastewater then flows into rivers and out to sea. They are eaten by sea animals there. If people then eat these animals, it means that we're eating the plastic as well.

James had always disliked Tony Hicks ever since Tony moved into his neighborhood. From the start，James sensed a strong rivalry（较量）forming between the two. Whenever James was doing something in the neighborhood，the true battle（战斗） began after a snowstorm. 

James woke up on a January morning. When he looked out the window，he saw white snow had covered the ground. So he rushed downstairs and pushed his snow blower out to clean the snow. Who did he see？It was Tony Hicks. He was busy cleaning the snow，too. 

James was angry. Doesn't he know this is my work？I've blown these houses for the past four years!Suddenly，it was no longer a matter of snow blowing for the purpose of helping his neighbors. For James，it was to beat Tony Hicks. 

The boys locked eyes for several seconds and then a competition began. The boys worked like crazy，completing each house as soon as possible. Finally，when they arrived at the end of a dead end

After a few seconds，James spoke，"We really did a fast work. "And for the first time， "We sure did △" All of a sudden，the boys laughed loudly. Then the boys set off together，clearing the walkways as friends. 

 Going clothes shopping can be difficult. Sometimes you go to a store with an idea in mind, but once you get there, you have no idea where to start. Why? {#blank#}1{#/blank#} Of course, you may feel lost when you choose.

 It's easier for you to make choosing good clothes if you have an idea. {#blank#}2{#/blank#} Clothing that fits should be comfortable.

 If you' re planning on losing weight, don't buy clothes that you think you' ll wear in a few months. Maybe it is just a plan or a dream and it never happens.{#blank#}3{#/blank#}

You may want to keep up with new styles, but if it isn't nice on you, don't wear it.{#blank#}4{#/blank#}

 Remember that the most important thing about choosing clothes is finding a look that you like, not someone else. {#blank#}5{#/blank#}

What is your favorite cartoon? It may be difficult for you to decide. But for Lang Lang, Tom and Jery is the best one. When he was two years old, he saw Tom playing the piano. This was bis first time to enjoy western music and this experience encouraged him to learn to play the piano. His talent in the keyboard（琴键）bas taken him from his hometown to the world.

Lang Lang became a good piano student at the age of three. Ever since the boy has been doing better and better. In 1977, the 15-year-old boy studied at a famous American music college. The road to success has never been easy. Lang Lang's father stopped bis job and went to America to look after him, while bis mother stayed in his bometown to make money. His parents really provided so much support for him. Lang Lang considered himself lucky and believed he should give something back. 

Lang Lang's performances are energetic（充满活力的）. He is well-known for making facial expressions（面部表情）and moving around while playing the piano. Finally, Lang Lang made great achievements in music. When he was 26 years old, he was qualified（有资格的）to perform on the world stage. After he became more famous and richer, Lang Lang helped the children in poor areas a lot

Almost all cultures celebrate the end of one year and the beginning of another in some way. Different cultures celebrate the beginning of a new year in different ways, and at different times on the calendar. 

In Western countries, people usually celebrate New Year at midnight on December 31st—January 1st. People may go to parties, sometimes dressed in formal clothes, and they may drink champagne (香槟酒) at midnight. During the first minutes of the new year, people cheer and wish each other happiness for the year ahead. But some cultures prefer to celebrate the new year by waking up early to watch the sunrise. They welcome the new year with the first light of the sunrise. 

Many cultures also do special things to get rid of bad luck at the beginning of a new year. For example, in Ecuador, families make a big doll from old clothes. The doll is filled with old newspapers and firecrackers. At midnight, these dolls are burned to show the bad things from the past year are gone and the new year can start afresh (重新). Other common traditions to keep away bad luck in a new year include throwing things into rivers or the ocean, or saying special things on the first day of the new year. 

Other New Year traditions are followed to bring good luck in the new year. One widespread Spanish tradition for good luck is to eat grapes on New Year's Day. The more grapes a person eats, the more good luck the person will have in the year. In France, people eat pancakes for good luck in the New Year. In the United States, some people eat black-eyed peas for good luck—but to get good luck for a whole year you have to eat 365 of them!
