Lost & Found

Emily was very sad because her little sister drew pictures on her science project. This was not the first time that her sister had ruined her school work. So, Emily requested(要求) her parents to buy her a study table with drawers (抽屉) where she could safely keep her books.

Emily's parents could not afford(负担得起) to buy a new table. However, they agreed to buy her a second-hand table. One day after school, Emily's mother took her to the second-hand store so that she could buy the table of her choice. By accident, she opened a drawer in an old black table. And, guess what? A small plastic bag with some dollar bills!

"Maybe I have found somebody's secret bag. Am I the luckiest twelve-year-old? My birthday is coming up soon. With this money, I can buy myself great presents. And maybe I can even buy things for my family." Emily thought. She stared at it with greedy (贪婪的) eyes and quickly pushed the bag to the end of the drawer. She told her mother she wanted that black table and later it was organized in her room.

When everybody left, she locked the room, quickly opened the drawer and took the plastic bag with dollars out. There was a note in the money bag. It seemed that some old lady was saving the money for her children and grandchildren. She could hear her heart beat (心跳)louder and louder when finally she counted twelve thousand dollars.

But now, with the money she had, she thought that she would have to make up many lies to spend it. She would have to hide the money all the time. She thought, "This money is not meant for me." She had felt the worst fear of getting caught from the moment she thought of stealing(偷).

Jenny was the only child in her home. She had a quarrel with her mother that afternoon and she ran out of the house angrily. She couldn't help weeping sorrowfully when she thought of the scolding from her mother. Having wandered aimlessly in the street for hours, she felt a little hungry and wished for something to eat, but it was not possible for her, since she had nothing with her. She stood beside a stand for a while, watching the middle-aged seller busy doing his business. However, with no money in hand, she sighed and had to leave.
The seller behind the stand noticed the young girl and asked, "Hey, girl, you want to have the noodles?"
"Oh, yes...but I don't have money on me…" she replied.
"That's nothing. I'll treat you today," said the man. "Come in."
The seller brought her a bowl of noodles, whose smell was so attractive. As she was eating, Jenny cried silently.
"What is it?" asked the man kindly.
"Nothing, actually I was just touched by your kindness!" said Jenny as she wiped her tears. "Even a stranger on the street will give me a bowl of noodles, while my mother drove me out of the house. She showed no care for me. She is so merciless compared to a stranger!!"
Hearing the words, the seller smiled, "Girl, do you really think so? I only gave you a bowl of noodles and you thanked me a lot. But it is your mother who has raised you since you were a baby. Can you number the times she cooked for you? Have you expressed your gratitude to her?"
Jenny sat there, speechless and numb with shock; she remembered mother's familiar face and weathered hands. "Why did I not think of that? A bowl of noodles from a stranger made me feel indebted, but I have never thanked my mum for what she has done for me."
On the way home, Jenny made up her mind to make an apology to her mother for her rudeness as soon as she arrived home.

"Every cloud has a silver lining, "It drives me crazy when Mom says nonsense (废话) like that.

I'd barely had time to arrange myself in the passenger seat, my foot already blow up like a balloon when she came out with it, exactly like I knew she would. First, she patted my leg. Then she just couldn't help herself, "Every cloud has a silver lining, you know sweetheart." "Mom I appreciate the thought, but I' m not ready to look on the bright side of this." We hadn't even left the school parking lot yet.

On the farthest side of the field I could see my teammates doing sprints training, Coach Zito striding back toward them. He'd mercifully helped me to the car in silence. Unlike Mom, he knew when it was best to say nothing.

As Mom started the engine, I imagined my teammates cooling down without me while they listened to Coach Zito's pep talk. And next Thursday, they would go to practice without me, and the Thursday after that. When I had fallen and twisted my ankle, I'd cried from the pain, but I was crying out of self-pity in the car. Hours and hours of training, and then this. I told myself there was a glimmer(微光)of hope that everything would um out okay, and that

I'd make it to the track meet next month, but I knew it was just that: a glimmer. The tears fell hot and fast Mom gave me a weak smile. "It'll be okay, Case." I suspected this was another version of the silver-lining thing, but I felt so miserable that I let it pass.

We finally arrived at the hospital. Doctor Van gently moved my ankle around a bit before carefully lowering it I nervously asked how long it would be before I could run." Four weeks maybe, possibly five," he replied," and even then, you'll need to take it easy for a while. Is that possible?" he asked with a smile.

Sara Savick remembers one special Easter when she was nine years old. Her parents gave her a baby duckling in a yellow basket.

"Mom said later that she bought the little duck because she felt sorry for it," recalled Sara. The people at the pet store colored the feathers pink for Easter. Sara named the duck Pinky.

Sara's mother really didn't think the baby duck would survive very long. But to her surprise, Pinky grew and got stronger and stronger. Soon, the little duckling was a healthy, hungry duck with white feathers.

"We fed Pinky oatmeal, cooked and uncooked, and small pieces of vegetables," said Sara. Pinky lived inside the house with Sara and her family. She specially fancied taking baths with Sara. Everyone treated Pinky as a family member.

But just when everything appeared to be perfect, the night of the "talk" came. Sara's Mom and Dad sat her down, explaining that the best thing for Pinky was to live a normal duck life, with other ducks. It was not natural for ducks to live indoors with a family, her father told her. He added Pinky needed to swim in ponds and do all the same things that ducks in the wild do.

Sara started to cry, knowing what was going to happen. Sara's parents decided to take Pinky to a park, which was two miles away. There was a pond with a lot of other ducks. Pinky would have the chance to live a natural life and Sara could still visit her.

The big day came, Sara and her parents put Pinky in a box and drove to the park. Sara said that Pinky did not look happy; maybe Pinky was convinced that she was a human, not a duck.

It was Hopper's day to visit his Grandma, and he had some big plans. "Let's hop (单脚跳) right down to the pond, Grandma," he said as he burst through the front door. When Hopper got excited, he just couldn't slow down. "We can go swimming, and we can have a picnic, and we can play chase!" Hopper loved going to Grandma's house, and he always looked forward to their special adventures together. Grandam was nappy to see her grandson, and she especially liked the fun they had together.

Just as they sat down to make their plans for the day, there was a loud boom! It was raining! Hopper ran to the window to look outside. "It's raining," he cried. "Now the day is ruined!" Grandma told him not to worry. "I'm really sorry, little boy," Grandma said. "We may not be able to get to the pond but I think I have something you might enjoy."

Walking to the bookshelf, Grandma pulled down a big photo album. They opened it and Hopper pointed at the pictures. "Grandma, that little girl looks just like you!" he said. Hoppers eyes jumped from photo to photo. "That's me when I learned to drive a car," Grandma said. Hopper liked the pictures of Grandma playing basketball and winning a race. "Oh, I was a fast little kid—just like you!" said Grandma with a proud smile. Finally, Grandma showed Hopper her favorite picture. It was a photograph of Grandma holding a little baby. "That baby is you," said Grandma.

When it was time to go, Grandma told Hopper that next visit they would hop down to the pond. But Hopper shook his head. "If it's all right with you, I'd rather look through the photo album again."

On February 4, while working on a construction site in Gratiot County, Michigan, Hansen heard terrified screams coming from nearby. He stopped his work and looked up. Standing on the back porch(门廊) of the home next door was a little boy yelling "Help!" while four fierce dogs barked madly in a circle below him.

At first, Hansen thought it was just a dog fight. Then alarm bells went off in his head. "The noises they made sounded like what dogs do when they're killing something," he says. His thought proved right when another young boy suddenly popped up in the middle of the dogs, and Hansen watched in horror as they sank in their teeth and threw him across the grass like a small doll.

"He was shirtless and covered in blood, and those dogs were trying to kill him." says Hansen.

Hansen raced across the grass, jumped the fence, and landed in the neighbor's yard. He shouted at the dogs, but they ignored him. Then he displayed the most aggression that he could manage, yelling louder until they let go just long enough for Hansen to catch eight-year-old Ethan Nokes around the stomach and bear-hug him. "I couldn't hold him under his armpits(腋窝), which would have made it easier to run, because they were torn wide open," says Hansen.

As Hansen dashed across the yard, the dogs bounced on him, biting at Ethan. Hansen rushed onto the steps. So did the dogs. When he reached the top, he pulled on a door; it wouldn't open. "A dog grabbed Ethan's foot, and I thought they were going to get him back from me," he says.

Alvin Bamburg, 66, was deep in the woods in Grand Cane, Louisiana, last December when something caught his eye. Among the fallen branches and leaves, it looked like litter. But Bamburg was attracted and picked it up.

"God just told me, " he later recounted.

As he drew closer, he saw that it was a broken balloon. Attached was a piece of paper decorated with sparkly star stickers. It was a child's Christmas wish list.

"Dear Santa, " the handwritten note read. "My name is Luna. I am four years old. I live in Liberal, Kansas. This year I have been nice. I would like candy, Spider-Man ball, Frozen doll. With love, Luna. "

Bamburg's heart hammered in his chest. Ever since he was a child, he had dreamed of this very scenario. "Years ago, " he says, "classes at school released balloons with notes. I've always wanted to find one. "

He believed this was his childhood wish coming true. And he knew he was going to make Luna's wish come true too.

However, the task seemed impossible, as Liberal, Kansas, is more than 650 miles from Grand Cane, Louisiana. But Bamburg's wife, Lee Ann Bamburg, didn't mind the distance. As an enthusiastic Facebook user, she had seen other people find all sorts of connections through the site and thought it might help her husband find Luna.

The next day Alvin posted a photo of the balloon and the Christmas list on his Facebook page, asking for help locating the sender.

At first, he wasn't confident the strategy would work. But as he saw the number of shares and comments on his post climbed into the hundreds, his hope grew into expectation. "I knew we were going to find Luna. " Alvin said.

And indeed, they did.

注意:

1. 续写词数应为150左右;

2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

One day Luna's mother came across the post.

When they arrived at Luna's home, the entire family was surprised.
