 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

It was the first day of our new grade. Everyone in the classroom was chatting happily, excited to see each other again after the long holidays. When the door slid open, all of us stopped talking and turned to look. In came our teacher Ms. Sullivan, followed by an ordinary-looking boy.

"This boy's name is Rafae." Ms, Sullivan announced. "He's a transfer student(转校生), and he's going to be in our class starting from today. Make sure all of you welcome him warmly."

The class clapped. But I didn't want to have a second look at the newcomer, for he had no outstanding qualities considering his small figure and casual T-shirt.

"Ob,I forgot to mention one thing." Ms Sullivan spoke up. "Rafael actually has hearing problems. Normally he would have hearing aids on, but his old ones have just been broken. His doctor suggested that he stay at home until he got his new ones. However, Rafael insisted on attending his first day of school. So if you want to communicate with him, you have to write t on a piece of paper."

This single speech sent the whole class up into an uproar(嘈杂). Some students looked at each other with expressions of surprise. Others voiced cries of concern out of pity.

Ms Sullivan calmed everyone down. I'd like someone to personally help him out throughout the day. Do I have any volunteers?"

"How can a disabled person be intelligent?" I thought to myself. I refused to raise my hand, expecting someone else would. But nobody did or said anything. Dead silence spread across the classroom.

It was by total bad luck that my eyes happened to meet Ms. Sullivan's.

"How about you, James?" She asked me. "Is it okay for you to take care of Rafael just for today?"

It is difficult to refuse a request by someone, especially if that person is a teacher. I sighed and nodded slightly. Ms. Sullivan gestured for Rafael to sit beside me and then asked us to share our holiday stories with the class.

    When I arrived at 6 a.m. in the large hospital kitchen, Rose was already checking name tags on the trays (托盘).

    Hi, I'm Janet." I tried to sound cheerful, although I already knew Rose's reputation for being impossible to work with. "I'm scheduled to work with you this week."

    Rose stopped what she was doing and peered over her reading glasses. I could tell from her expression she wasn't pleased to sec a student worker.

    “What do you want me to do? Start the coffee?” I asked.

Rose coldly nodded and went back to checking name tags.

    I filled the 40-cup pot with water and began making the coffee when Rose yelled, “That's not the way to make coffee.” She stepped in and took over.

    Nothing I did pleased her. All morning, her eagle eyes missed nothing and her sharp words hurt.

    Totally exhausted, I trudged the six blocks home late that June afternoon. As a third year university student working my way through school, I had never before met anyone like Rose.

    Fighting back tears, I wrestled with my dilemma alone in my room. "What shall I do?" The answer caught me completely by surprise. I needed to love Rose.

    Working with Rose the next morning, I ignored the hurtful remarks thrown in my direction and did things Rose's way as much as possible. As I worked, I silently began to surround Rose with a warm blanket of love. Over the next few days, an amazing thing began to happen. My focus shifted from what she was doing to me and I started seeing Rose as the hurting person she was. Then her icy tension began to melt away.

    Throughout the rest of the summer, we had numerous opportunities to work together. Each time, she seemed truly happy to see me. Her bitterness gave way as she started opening up. As I worked with this lonely woman, I listened to her, something no one else had done. I learned that she was burdened by elderly parents who needed her care and her own health problems.

    The days slipped by quickly as I finished the last several weeks of my summer job. I soon would be returning as a full-time university student and say goodbye to Rose.

    I encountered God the summer I was five. My father had finally grown too sick to get out of bed, so the heat and nervous tension in the air inside the house made it impossible to breathe. I would escape by squeezing under the front porch. All manner of creatures lived there, but I mostly ignored them, with one exception — a little frog who, every time I crawled (爬行) under the porch, stared at me with great, golden eyes.

    In late June, the frog finally hopped (跳跃) toward my arm and stared at me, demanding eye contact. Once he had my attention, he opened his wide mouth and said, "Hello, Sophie."

    I should have been shocked, but for some reason, I wasn't. Perhaps at five years old, I was more receptive to something against the laws of nature. At any rate, I was not shocked that a frog could speak. I had a more pressing question.

    "How do you know my name?"

    The frog blinked slowly. "I know everything. I am God."

    I spoke, "You can't be God. You're too small."

    He extended a long, webbed finger and was pointing to the edge of the porch's shadow — to the spot where my mother had tried to grow flowers there for years. She had stopped trying when my father's condition worsened.

    "Look there," commanded the frog, and I stared as a beautiful white flower blossomed as if stretching its limbs after a long sleep. In my five years, I had never seen anything so splendid.

    God and I became good friends that summer. I spent every day under the porch, talking to him.

    Sometimes I asked God questions. Sometimes he answered. Once, I asked him where Heaven was.

    "Heaven," he said, "is where I live."

    In August, my father's illness had progressed to the point that I was sent to my aunt's house in Virginia. I told God I would be back soon, and then waited in Virginia for my father to get better.

There were doubts of permanent paralysis(瘫痪)— the very mention of which was enough to break us down. From finding it extremely painful to walk,to not being able to get up on his own,and to not being able to stand at all,Ted's problem was worsening day by day.Most  surprisingly,all this while,he was  as  strong  as,perhaps,only children can be in such difficult times.     During this period,it was not unusual for my mother to have sudden breakdowns.Once,she burst into tears while watching Ted playing joyfully.He wiped off her tears,and said,"Don't cry,mummy.See,I can stand and even run on my own!"Saying this,he tried to get up,stood on shaking legs for just about a few microseconds and fell down,only to be safely caught in the arms of my mom,who hugged him dearly and cried some more.

This was the most heart-breaking thing that I had ever experienced.But it was also a powerful one for the simple fact that it was my little brother who taught us what life was all about—HOPE.

Witnessing my brother's strong will and positive attitude inspired me as well.As a brother,I could not stand by doing nothing at all.Hope was burning in my heart when I had the idea to train my brother to walk again.I firmly believe Ted could stand up and walk as he used to.Whenever school was over,I would put Ted into a pushchair and tell my mom that we'd just go to the park.
