One pleasant New Year morning, Edward got up and dressed himself in a hurry. He wanted to be the first to wish everyone a happy New Year. He went into every room, and shouted the words of welcome. Then he ran into the street to repeat them to those he met. When he came back, his father gave him two bright, new silver dollars. His face lighted up as he took them. He had wished for a long time to buy some nice books that he had seen at the bookstore.

As he ran down the street with a light heart to the bookshop, he saw a poor German family—the father, mother, and three children shivering(发抖) in the cold wind.

"I wish you a happy New Year," said Edward, as he was happily passing by. The man shook his head. "You do not belong to this country?" asked Edward. The man again shook his head, for he could not understand or speak English. But he pointed to his mouth, and to the children, as if to say, "These little ones have had nothing to eat for a long time." Edward quickly understood that these people were poor and in a very difficult situation and required some help. He took out his dollars, and gave one to the man, and the other to his wife.

How their eyes sparkled (闪耀)with gratitude! They said something in their language, which doubtlessly meant, "We thank you a thousand times, and will remember you forever."

When Edward came home, his father asked what books he had bought. He hung his head a moment, but quickly looked up. "I have bought no books," said he, "I gave my money to some poor people, who seemed to be very hungry."

Ten-year-old Sami loved to visit his grandfather's house. The house was near the beautiful blue sea. At the seaside stood thick and tall palm trees with green coconuts hanging from them. When the coconuts fell down, Sami would break them open and drink the coconut water. Sami liked to play under the trees. It was always great fun to spend the holidays at Grandpa's place.

This winter vacation, Sami was surprised when he came to his grandfather's village. There were hardly any trees left. He saw houses built near the sea. People had cut down many palm trees and there was hardly any greenery left.

Grandpa's house was different. He never allowed his trees to be cut. He hugged each palm tree in his courtyard. He also named the two big trees near the front door--one was Petu, and the other Betu. He had planted them with his own hands and today they had become large, massive trees with thick trunks. They were tall and green and gave the sweetest, juiciest coconuts.

One night, Sami was awakened by a strange sound. He could not sleep. He tossed (辗转) and turned in bed.

Suddenly, the ground shook as if the earth was splitting. He sat up straight and then ran to Grandpa. He clung(附着)to his grandpa tightly. Grandpa cried out, "It's an earthquake! It's an earthquake!" They ran outside the house. They thought that would be safe.

Suddenly, there was a loud sound; the earth was not splitting but the sea was roaring. People were shouting, screaming and crying, "The sea is rising! The sea is rising." The villagers started running away from the beach.

Sami watched dumbstruck (呆若木鸡).

The waves were rising higher and higher. Sami thought, "How big the waves are!" He went into the house again and saw water coming in from all sides. He was scared.

Sami remembered his mother telling him long ago," You must always get out of the house if the floods come too near." He ran outside the house with Grandpa. But the water came surging (汹涌) in.

Waves about twelve meters high came rushing in, drowning everything. Water was all around and everywhere.

Paragraph 1:

Grandpa held Sami's hand tightly but a huge wave separated them.

Paragraph 2:

"Sami, Sami!" Grandpa cried. "Don't be scared, little one, come to me, quickly."

On a rainy night in March 2013, my husband Reece went out to get a box that he had forgotten in his car. On his way back inside, he noticed a small shadow moving on the driveway. He walked towards it quietly, and found it was a small hedgehog(刺猬), all wet in the grass, eating mud. Reece quickly removed his jacket and picked it up. The hedgehog was very weak and unable to move about quickly. But he did not seem to be frightened; nor did he resist being scooped up (抱起).

Once he was inside, Reece called out to me, saying that he had something that would make my heart melt, and he was right! We named the hedgehog Alf, because, just like the TV show character of the"80s, he came out of nowhere. And, like Alf the alien, this little hedgehog was amazingly intelligent. Not only did he learn to eat his dinner and drink water from his bowls, but he also learnt to wait for us inside his little indoor cubby house and hop into his pet carrier whenever we took him out with us.

Alf knows us very well and recognizes both our voices. He does not roll into a ball or put his spines up. Every day he allows us to pat him. He loves playing with paper and towels and will bite and tug on the bed sheets if given a chance. Like all pets, Alf loves his treats, in particular small pieces of sugar-coated biscuits.

Unfortunately, in April 2014, I was in a car accident and had to spend two months in the hospital. And boy, did I miss Alf! Reece told me that Alf would search around the house for me, checking in places where I'd normally be, such as my desk, my favorite seat in front of the TV and even my side of the bed.

注意:

1)续写的词数应为150左右;

2)请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

……

I cannot describe the feeling when I arrived home and saw his little face again.
