    When I Have a Different Opinion

    In 1945, a 12-year-old boy saw a beautiful brooch(胸针) in a shop window that set his heart racing. But the price—five dollars—was too high for Reuben Earle. Five dollars would buy almost a week's food for his family.

    Reuben couldn't ask his father for the money. Everything his father made through fishing went to his mother, Dora. Slim and beautiful, she was the center of the home, the glue that held it together. The housework was never-ending, and she struggled to feed and clothe their five children but she was happy as her family and their well-being were all she cared about.

    Nevertheless, he opened the shop's weathered(风化的) door and went inside. Standing proud and straight in his flour-sack（面粉袋改做的） shirt and washed-out trousers, he told the shopkeeper what he wanted, adding ,“But I don't have the money right now. Can you please hold it for me for some time？”

    “I'll try,” the shopkeeper smiled. “People around here don't usually have that kind of money to spend on things. It should keep for a while.”

    Reuben respectfully touched his worn cap and walked out. He would raise the money and not tell anybody, for he thought Mum would get surprised when she saw that brooch. On hearing the sound of hammering from a side street, Reuben suddenly had an idea that he could raise money by selling the used nail bags(装钉子的麻袋). People built their own homes in Bay Roberts, using nails bought in bags from a local factory. Sometimes the used bags were thrown away at the construction site, and Reuben knew he could sell them back to the factory for five cents a piece.

    That day he sold two nail bags and hid the money in a rusty soda tin(汽水罐).

    As soon as I arrived, Kathy asked me," Do you have any milk at your house?" "Yes," I replied. "If you need some, I'll go and get it right away."

    "Oh, that's OK. Come and sit down* Just give Peter the key and let him get it." said Kathy. Then I soon joined in the children's laughing and running. Before I knew it, Peter came back with a bottle of milk in his hand.

    The smell of the meal filled the room. We sat together and enjoyed the wonderful moment. Time flew between jokes. After a happy dinner, I said goodbye to them. With colorful and beautiful holiday lights shining outside, I headed home.

    When I opened my door, I could hardly believe my eyes.

Although it was a little cooler than the daytime, the workshop was quiet and terrible at night. When I thought it was about daybreak, I took a look at the time before I found out it was less than 12 in the middle of the night. Oh, my God, how long is it? What time does it break? After midnight we can go to the dining hall, but in front of the dish we have no appetite, we hurriedly picked a few mouthfuls of rice, or we'll be hungry all night. Although this work looks very easy, which is to give the milk packing, but only a few days later, my fingers began to blister, and it is very difficult to sleep during the day.

Just after a week, I decided to quit.

It was a beautiful May morning. As usual, I started my day by sitting outside breathing the fresh air as I read my book and drank my coffee. Afterwards, there were two things I was determined to do. First, make sure my husband got our small Christmas trees down from the attic （阁楼） and, second, take several bags of clothes, blankets and comforters to the donation center. I had been faithful in doing that every year, but for whatever reason. I had delayed this year and the bags were now piling up and overflowing.

After reading for a while, I went into the bedroom to ask my husband to bring the trees down. He was asleep so I figured I'd surprise him and get them down by myself.

I went to the garage to access the attic storage and moved our tall metal ladder into place. I had to move the bags of clothing and blankets out of the way, determined once again to get those to the donation center.

I climbed the ladder, and two steps from the top I was able to reach up and push open the attic door. Then, with my feet on the very last step and part of my upper body in the attic. I saw my trees. I awkwardly raised my leg to climb onto the attic floor. Looking down. and then looking up again. I decided that this was actually too much for me. I should wait for my husband to get them.

As I stepped down, my foot missed the shaky ladder's step. With one foot swinging and the other on the top step, I grabbed （抓住） the attic floorboard and called my husband. Unfortunately, he couldn't hear me. As I went to take another step down, the ladder suddenly came out from under me, loudly crashing onto the concrete garage floor, leaving me hanging from the at tic with sweaty hands. In that second, which seemed like a century, I prayed and then called my husband.

With my body swinging in midair and my hands slowly sliding closer to the edge, I fell.

Arriving at the emergency center, I anxiously waited to see the doctor.

About three months ago, a group of us were playing football together after school. Having left something in the classroom, I went inside to get it and found Roy going through the pockets of people's coats. In his hand he had a wallet and I knew it wasn't his. Roy went bright red. "I will put it back right now," he said, and he did so. I turned round and walked out without saying a word. I really hoped that Roy would explain why he had been stealing, but instead he started avoiding me.

Last week, our school had a big fair in order to raise money for a charity and we made about ￡500. But to our surprise, the next morning, we were told that the money had been stolen. This morning I decided to ask Roy about the theft so I went to see him. Roy was out. I put his jacket on and put my hands in the pockets. I could feel a lot of notes and I pulled them out. It looked as if there were about ￡500 there. I was so surprised that I just stood there, holding the notes in my hand. And that moment, Roy walked in.
