As more information comes out about 10-year-old Cindy Smith's death(死亡), worries about amusement park safety(游乐场安全性) grow.

Cindy is not the first child who died on an amusement park ride. 25 years ago, the mother of a 14-year-old girl waited to pick up her daughter outside Worlds of Fun. Laura Barry never saw her daughter Rosie alive again.

"My heart goes out to the Smith family more than they can ever possibly know," said Barry. She is one of the few people who truly know the hurt that family is feeling.

In 1995, Rosie's mom said that something went wrong on the Timber Wolf the night Rosie died. Police found no evidence(证据). Two men told the police that they saw Rosie standing before she fell out of the car.

"I couldn't believe that such a thing could happen still and again," said Barry. She believes Rosie's death should have been a wakeup call for amusement park safety.

She finds that not much has changed in the past years. Amusement parks race to build bigger, taller, faster rides. In her opinion, amusement parks just try to bring in visitors and give them the idea that riding is good, safe and fun. She believes that parks should have put safety first.

There is no exact number of amusement park deaths each year. It is quite low according to some websites. But Barry doesn't accept that. "My daughter was the only person that had ever been killed at Worlds of Fun in all of the years, among all of the thousands and thousands of people that went there. The number doesn't mean anything, you know, because when your child is the one, that's one too many," she said.

Hansel and Gretel

Gretel heard their stepmother planning to kill her and her brother. But Hansel had a plan to {#blank#}1{#/blank#} himself and his sister. He went to get some white stones before he went to bed that night. The next day, the husband sent the children to the {#blank#}2{#/blank#}. Hansel {#blank#}3{#/blank#} the stones as they walked. Later that night, they could see the stones because of the{#blank#}4{#/blank#}moonlight/moon. The stones showed them the way home. After getting home, their{#blank#}5{#/blank#} told them to go to the forest again when they {#blank#}6{#/blank#} up. Hansel wanted to get more stones, but she did not let him go out. The next morning, the husband sent the children to the forest. Hansel had no stones, so he dropped {#blank#}7{#/blank#} of bread. But the birds ate them, so Hansel and Gretel were {#blank#}8{#/blank#} in the forest.  They walked {#blank#}9{#/blank#} they saw a house made of food. Hansel wanted to eat the house, but then they heard the {#blank#}10{#/blank#} of an old woman coming from the house.

Every girl dreams and Lisa is no exception. She has read dozens of books on how to be a ballerina(芭蕾舞女演员). "Swan Lake" is her favorite. She hopes one day her dream will come true. She has taken ballet lessons and all her teachers are sure she is a good student.

One day she saw a poster that a famous ballerina group will be performing in her hometown. Confidence filled her heart and she was so excited. Her thoughts soon ran wild. "I must meet up with the leader of the group and show him my skills," she whispered to herself. When the troupe(舞团) arrived, Lisa put on her ballet outfit(芭蕾舞装) and hid in the dressing room. To her luck, the leader entered and she timidly(胆怯地) knocked at the door. She bravely approached him and handed him a bunch of red roses. The thorns(刺) hurt her hand but she did not care about the pain. The leader watched her action as she told him her dream. "Alright, you dance and then I will give you my conclusion." But half way through the dance he stopped her and said, "I'm sorry you're not good enough!" On hearing this Lisa ran as fast as her legs could carry her and was upset. She decided to give up her dream.

Many years later, she heard that the same ballet troupe was performing in her town again. Bitter memories of the leader's unfriendly words came flooding back to her. This time she decided to find out why the leader had told her she was not good enough. This was his reply, "I tell this to every student." Then she got a further shock from the leader, "I remember your gift of roses and how the thorns had hurt your fingers but you carried on bravery. If you had treated ballet like that and did not give up so easily, therefore, you still deserve my conclusion!"

My dear boys and girls, good morning. Today I'm going to talk to you about my suggestions about how to become stronger.

As the high school entrance examination is coming soon, you might feel a bit worried or nervous. These feelings may make you stressed out and fail to focus on your studies. But think about it. Would your favorite superhero have these same feelings?

Scientists have been studying what they call the "Spider-Man Effect" (蜘蛛侠效应) in children. They've found that if kids imagine themselves as a powerful person—such as a super hero like Spider-Man, they won't feel so nervous and will be able to focus on their work.

For example, if you feel nervous during an exam, try to imagine that you are a Spider-Man. You may find that you can "remove" the stress from this situation and feel more confident. This can help keep you fight off bad feelings and focus on your task, just like a superhero would. Pretending to be a superhero makes us feel powerful and that will have an influence on how we act in real life.

But you don't have to always choose a superhero like Spider-man. Anyone you admire can encourage you to get through hard times, or remind you of how you should act in certain situations. Favorite stars, famous painters, even our own parents—anyone can be our "Spider-Man". For example, when it comes to how I communicate with others, I like to look toward my mom for inspiration. She is a middle school teacher who is always kind, thoughtful and brave. I try to act the same way like her.

The Picture of Peace

When Mike was seven, he knew his dream was to be a photographer. He kept working on it for years. Recently, he was trying to take a picture of a sunset(日落) to enter the school1 competition. 

"Mom，it has been cloudy these days. I don't think I can get this picture!" Mike complained. 

"Why not use one of your photos on the computer?" suggested Mom. 

"I can't-the rules say the photos have to be taken with a traditional camera. We hand in a roll of film, it gets developed(冲洗胶卷), and we2 one photo for the competition. "

"Why is a sunset so important?" Mom asked. 

"The3 of the competition is peace，" Mike explained, "and I feel most peaceful seeing a sunset. "

Zach, his six-year-old brother came out of the bedroom. " Hey, you want to take a picture of me? Look!" He put both arms over his head. 

"Not right now, " said Mike, laughing. 

That very afternoon, Mike felt excited when he saw clear skies. He carefully lined up his shot(镜头) and waited4 till the sun reached the ground. 

"That's it! Perfect!" he shouted cheerfully. 

The next morning, Mike noticed he could take one more picture to complete the roll of film, so he walked into Zach's room. Zach was 5 quietly with a teddy bear under his arm. Mike didn't wake Zach up, and carefully took a picture of him. 

A week later, Mike got the photos. The sunset picture was the one he was most6 to see. There it was! It was as nearly perfect as Mike had expected. 

Then, he looked through the other photos. Suddenly，he stopped. His eyebrows(眉毛) rose as he 7 the photo of Zach. He looked back at the photo of the sunset，which seemed less perfect now. He 8 the two choices. Finally, he decided to hand in the photo of Zach for the competition.
