Motorcyclists born to ride supplies to firefighters

Chongqing motorcyclists are being hailed as heroes for volunteering to transport much-needed supplies to the fire and rescue workers fighting the wildfires caused by prolonged heat and drought across multiple districts in the municipality.

As of Wednesday, Chongqing has issued a red alert, {#blank#}1{#/blank#} most severe in the four-tier warning system, for high temperatures for 16 consecutive days.

In the scorching heat and drought conditions, multiple wildfires have ravaged many parts of Chongqing. As of Tuesday, several large wildfires have been brought {#blank#}2{#/blank#} control with the joint efforts of the fire and rescue workers, social organizations and residents. No casualties have been reported.

Facing the tough situation, the city government called for volunteers with {#blank#}3{#/blank#}(relate) skills and experience to join the firefighting, and a large number of {#blank#}4{#/blank#}(motorcyclist) have played an important role and won widespread praise.

"{#blank#}5{#/blank#} is my honor and duty to guard my hometown," said 27-year-old Li Xin, a member of Yueqi Motorcycle Club in Beibei district.

On Sunday night, upon {#blank#}6{#/blank#}(hear) the recruitment notice, Li organized a team of 15 club members to support the firefighting in Beibei's Xiema town, {#blank#}7{#/blank#} is the epicenter of the local blazes.

Growing up in poverty in rural Kenya,Nelly Cheboi watched her single mother work tirelessly so she could attend school. 

From an early age,she realized that her family,along with others like hers in their village, was1 a cycle that left them little hope. Cheboi attended college.2 a scholarship in the United States,worked odd jobs to support her family,and discovered her3 for computer science. She4 the success in finding jobs to her computer literacy. She knew she wanted to share it with her5 back home. 

Today,she's giving 4,000 kids the chance for a6 future through her nonprofit, TechLit Africa. The organization uses recycled7 to create technology labs in schools in rural Kenya. 

In 2018,she began8 recycled computers. She started small,carrying the machines to Kenya and9 customs fees and taxes herself. TechLit Africa now works with shipping companies to10 the donated computers so it's more cost11 . The donated hardware is12 to partner schools in rural Kenya,where students aged 4 to 12 receive daily classes and13 opportunities from professionals and gain skills that will help improve their education and prepare them for future jobs. 

"My hope is that when the first TechLit kids graduate from high school,they're able to get a job online14 they will know how to code,"Cheboi said. "The world is your oyster when you are educated. By bringing the resources,by bringing these skills,we are15 the world to them. "

In 1984, I was a painfully insecure teenage girl from a dysfunctional family, depressed, underweight, and rejected by my classmates. My only comfort was to be the stage manager at our school.

One day, actors from the famous Oregon Shakespeare Festival came to perform for the school. One of them was Barry Kraft, and he was unlike anyone I'd ever met. As I ran around backstage helping him, he treated me with friendliness and respect that he would show for friends in his living room.

He showed up at our drama class and asked everyone to narrate a monologue (独白). To my shock, he took me aside after class and said, "Your monologue was the best. That was really very good."

I made it through graduation and got accepted to college. That summer, I traveled with a friend to see Mr. Kraft perform. During one performance, I gathered up my courage and dropped him a note during the break, saying I was visiting and if he looked he could see us. Almost immediately I regretted sending the note. I thought it was the most presumptuous (冒失的) thing I had ever done.

At the end of the show, he was waiting for me! He smiled broadly and gave me a hug. Then he said, "Would you like to visit backstage?" And off we went. Every time we met someone, he introduced me and said, "She's a very good performer who was a huge help to me at her school visit."

It is difficult to describe how important this man's attention was to me. A successful actor doesn't have to give a depressed teenager the time of day, but he did far more. My confidence had just increased 800 percent. I am now a happily married professional, and whenever I notice a teenager in need, I remember Barry Kraft. He saw a teenager in need of attention and support, and he took the time to help. So now I take the time, too.
