湖北省仙桃市田家炳实验高级中学2023-2024学年高二下学期4月期中英语试题

阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳选项。

Martha Payne is 9 years old. She lives in a small community in Scotland. Martha is interested in the food at her school. She is interested in how good it tastes, and how healthy it is, and whether it contains any hairs. A few months ago, she started to write a blog about her school dinners. She photographed her school dinners, and then posted the pictures on her blog and told us what she thought about the food. Most days, she thought the food was OK, and on some days she thought it was really good.

Children in other schools, and other countries, started to read Martha's blog. Some of them left comments on Martha's school dinners. And some sent Martha pictures of their own school dinners, and Martha published these on her blog. Then Martha started to use her blog to raise money for a charity called Mary's Meals, which provides school meals for children in poor communities in developing countries.

And at this point, the officials who run the education system in the part of Scotland where Martha lives became aware of her blog. They didn't want publicity for the food in their schools. Perhaps they were afraid that people would start to criticize (批评) their school dinners and say that they were unhealthy. They said that Martha's blog had to stop.

Martha's head teacher told Martha the bad news, and Martha was sad and wrote a final blog post to say goodbye to her readers. The newspapers, the radio and the television all carried stories about Martha's blog. This was not at all what the officials wanted. A day later, they decided that Martha could continue writing her blog about her school dinners, and taking pictures of them.

(1)、Why does Martha write a blog about her school dinners?
A、She is interested in the school food. B、She wants to learn to cook. C、She wants the school food improved. D、She is worried about the school food.
(2)、What can we learn from Paragraph 2?
A、Martha's blog didn't reach far. B、Martha's blog received wide attention. C、Martha's blog wasn't quite successful. D、Martha's blog helped to raise little money.
(3)、Why did the officials want to stop Martha's blog?
A、The school food was unhealthy. B、Martha gave bad comments on her blog. C、They were afraid the school food would be criticized. D、The public thought poorly of the school food.
(4)、What made the officials give in finally?
A、Martha's great fame. B、The popularity of Martha's blog. C、Support from the press. D、Support from Martha's head teacher.

It seems that in many places storms visit more often. When a storm is coming, most people leave the area as quickly as possible and head for safety. But there are a few people who will get into their cars and go straight for the center of the storm. These people are willing to risk being killed by floods or 100-kilometer-an-hour winds for the excitement of watching the storm close up.

"Storm chasing" is becoming an increasingly popular hobby, especially in the Midwest of the United States, where there are frequent storms between March and July. A storm chaser begins the day by checking the Internet for the latest weather reports, and then drives up to 1,000 kilometers to where the storm will be and waits for it to develop.

Although anyone can do it, storm chasing is extremely dangerous. The power of a big storm can throw a cow into the air or destroy a whole house in seconds. Storm chasers are also often hurt in accidents caused by driving in a heavy rain. If you are a beginner, it is much safer to join a group for storm-chasing vacations during the storm season.

Even then, storm chasing is not all adventure and excitement. "Storm chasing is 95% driving," says Daniel Lynch, who spends most of his summer storm-chasing. "Sometimes you can sit around for hours waiting for something to happen, and all you get is blue sky and a few light showers."

However, for storm chasers, it is all worth it. "When you get close to a storm, it is the most exciting sight you will ever see in your life," says Jasper Morley. "Every storm is an example of the power of nature. It is the greatest show on Earth."

In today's society, almost half of all marriages in America end in divorce, which means many children have divorced parents, and I am by no means a rare case. There are plenty of other people understanding the difficulty of having separated parents and living in two households. Despite this, people who haven't personally experienced divorce really have no idea what it's like.

My parents have handled divorce and joint custody(监护)well, at least better than expected. Occasionally my parents put up the curtain to block my brother and I from the reality and I will get a glimpse of the not-so-bright-and-sunny reality, the fact that my parents simply don't like each other, let along get along. They try to make sure my brother and I don't overhear the argument and do their best to keep my brother and I out of their issues.

Last Mother's Day I woke up at my dad's house with a text message from my mom saying," Call me when u can." I rolled out of bed and dated her number. On other end of the phone I could hear my mom's trembling voice." Your dad isn't letting me have you until 7 tonight." I knew Mother's Day was important to her and me. I began to get angry with my dad, but I told myself that getting mad and fueling my mom's anger towards my dad wouldn't help. Later my father told me that he had planned to spend time with my grandma and step-mom for Mother's Day, which I understood and accepted but I also understood why my mom wouldn't accept it.

While having divorced parents is difficult, I have learned a lot about how to deal with conflict from an early age and I've been blessed with an extremely large family, which is an amazing network of support.

One morning, a blind boy sat on the steps of a building with a hat by his feet. He held a sign which said, "I am blind, Please help me."

There were only a few coins in the hat. A man was walking by. He took out a few coins from his pocket and dropped them into the hat. He then took the sign, turned it around, and wrote some words on it. He put the sign back so that everyone who walked by could see the news words.

Soon the hat began to fill up. A lot more people were giving the money to the blind boy. That afternoon the man who had changed the sign came to see how things were. The boy recognized his footsteps and asked." Are you the one who changed my sign in the morning? What did you write?

The man said, "I only wrote the truth. I said what you said, but in a different way." What he had written was, "Today is a beautiful day, but I can not see it."

Do you think the first sign and the second sign were saying the same thing?

Of course both signs told people the boy was blind. But the first sign simply told people to help by putting some money in the hat. The second sign told people that they were able to enjoy the beauty of the day, but the boy could not enjoy it because he was blind.

The first sign simply said the boy was blind, while the second sign told people they were so lucky that they were not blind. There are at least two lessons we can learn from this simple story.

The first is: Treasure what you have. Someone else has less. Try your best to help those who need your help.

The second is: Be creative. Think differently. There is always a better way.
