Marshall was a promising young artist. He painted with great feeling. His paintings were all characterized by a strong love and sympathy for people. His high school art teacher felt he had a special talent. 

Marshall's father didn't want him to be a painter, however. Mr. Donaldson wanted his son to be a stockbroker(股票经纪人). He wanted Marshall to continue the dynasty started by his great-great grandfather in 1820. The family business, Donaldson and Donaldson Inc. , was now a large, successful investment firm. 

Mr. Donaldson felt Marshall was much too individualistic. "Listen, " he told his son, "I had no say in choosing my career. I just did what my dad told me. "

"But you are good at business, " Marshall replied. "I'm not. I'm sure I would just cause trouble for you and problems for the company. " Marshall felt there was no way he could ever fill his father's shoes. And, although he was no stranger to high society, he didn't feel comfortable among the wealthy. He preferred the ordinary, working-class people of the city. His paintings told of their struggles and their hopes. 

Sometimes after school Marshall would hang around outside a factory gate. He would draw the workers as they came out at the end of their shift. Marshall wondered how they could keep doing that hard, boring work year after year. Then he realized most of them would be doing something different if they could. But their great obstacle in life was lack of education. 

When Marshall got home, he would take out his paintings. The paintings expressed his sympathy and respect for those hard-working people. 

Well, Marshall never did enter the family business. This angered his father. But as Marshall got older, his career as an artist began to take off. He became quite famous, and people paid large amounts for his "plain people" paintings. 

In time, this success won Marshall's dad over. Mr. Donaldson could see his son was born to paint. Marshall was glad his father finally came around. And happily, the two began to work together after all. Twice each year they held a benefit art show. 

Marshall donated a number of his paintings to be sold at each show. The persuasive Mr. Donaldson got his wealthy friends and clients(客户) to attend—and to spend. The money from the art sales was used to help factory workers improve their education. 

Willie and his little dog Bounce were best friends. Willie taught his dog many interesting tricks, and often said that Bounce could do almost anything in the world but talk.

One day, Willie walked with Bounce down to the river, which was very close to his father Mr. Brown's store.

Willie began to throw stones into the water and watch ripples (涟漪). Bounce lay on the grass, enjoying the warm sunshine.

There were some logs (原木) floating in the river near the bank. Willie jumped upon one of them to see if he could throw a stone across the river. Just as he was about to throw, the log turned and he fell into the water. He was so scared, for he did not know how to swim, and there was no one nearby.

Not being a big water dog, poor Bounce ran up and down the bank two or three times, barking (叫), looking first at Willie and then around. Then he ran to Mr. Brown's store as fast as he could.

When he got there, he caught hold of Mr. Brown's clothes, then ran to the door, then back again, catching at him, barking and jumping. Mr. Brown realized something was wrong. He went with the dog.

Soon the father came to the river, and saw Willie struggling (挣扎) in the water. Luckily, his father saved him. When he got over his fear, no one seemed to be more delighted than Bounce, his true friend.

"What's wrong, Suzie?" asked Dad. "Why are you looking so unhappy?"

"It is just that Amine's family has moved to Sydney," cried Suzie. "She will go to a new school there, make new friends, lead a new life and… and{#blank#}1{#/blank#} me." Suzie couldn't speak any more with tears in her eyes.

Dad held Suzie's small hand in his large one and {#blank#}2{#/blank#} patted（拍）her on the head.

"It's OK, Suzie," he said. "I am sure you will find another friend. There are so many other children at school, aren't there?"

"But… but it is not the same! Amine is my special friend— the best friend I have ever had. I don't want to {#blank#}3{#/blank#} without her."

"Now, dear, it is really sad to see Amine going away. But you have to move on with your {#blank#}4{#/blank#} life. Listen to me, go to school and get yourself some new friends. Cheer up!"

Suzie nodded her head and began reading her storybook.

Last week our school held a sports meeting. Everyone in our class felt very excited {#blank#}1{#/blank#} we were the winners. In the boys' relay race (接力赛), Michael ran very fast and our class {#blank#}2{#/blank#}(win) first place. Yu Ting is {#blank#}3{#/blank#}(good) at the long jump than any other girl. She took part in it and won the first prize (奖). We're sorry that we did {#blank#}4{#/blank#}(badly) in the high jump than last time. But we're sure we can do much {#blank#}5{#/blank#}(well) next time. I took part in the boys' 400-metre race. I did my best and was the first {#blank#}6{#/blank#} (pass) the finishing line. I had {#blank#}7{#/blank#} great time in the race. Now I love sports better. I want to be a soccer {#blank#}8{#/blank#}(play). I will take {#blank#}9{#/blank#} (much) exercise every day and work harder. I hope some day I {#blank#}10{#/blank#} (be) able to take part in the Olympic Games. Let's wait and see!

 To 14-year-old Joe Whale, mistakes are not problems They are good chances to have fun making art. And making art is what Joe has been doing {#blank#}1{#/blank#}(自从) he was a kid. He was very interested in drawing and a lot of time was spent in practicing his painting skills by him. "I always draw and create art pieces," he said, "{#blank#}2{#/blank#}(比较) with-my other hobbies, drawing is my favourite ." He added . He was making his specialty black-and-white doodles(涂鸦) at the age of six.

 At school, Joe would complete his work very quickly and then he could doodle. He always drew many funny pictures everywhere. {#blank#}3{#/blank#}(虽然) he wasn't good at study, he still fell in love with his school life through drawing . He doodled on his math workbook and his table. Though his doodles gave people a bright feeling, his teachers were not always happy to find his doodles in unexpected places! What was worse, he was even {#blank#}4{#/blank#}(惩罚) for his action .

 Joe' s parents signed him up for after-school art classes. His art teacher provided him with a whole wall to doodle on. It was really the best presents for Joe. Besides, he also posted his works on social media. And at last he became well-known {#blank#}5{#/blank#}(作为)"The Doodle Boy".

 Soon Joe had his first real show. At the age of ninè, he doodled on an eight-foot-by-eight-foot wall of the restaurant in his hometown . He drew {#blank#}6{#/blank#}(当…时) he was getting down on his knees and standing on a chair. It took him 12 hou. s to fill the wall. His neighbours took {#blank#}7{#/blank#}(自豪感) in him so much.

 Joe doesn't always make plans for his art ahead. He just draws according to what he meets or what he thinks in his {#blank#}8{#/blank#}(日常的) life. If he meets problems, he just looks around and enjoys {#blank#}9{#/blank#}(他自己). Joe also gives a useful suggestion to other creative kids: Find what you truly love and don't let{#blank#}10{#/blank#}(任何人) stop you.
