I went up to the roof for a break after studying for an hour and watched the 50 or so people swimming in the natural rock pool below our house. It was a sunny day--a blue, cloudless sky over a calm sea. But then, as I looked in the distance, I discovered three or four big waves heading towards the shore. I'd seen these mini-tsunamis(海啸) many times before. They were heading at speed in the direction of the pool. Most people knew how to look out for them, but from the screams that started coming from the beach, I could tell someone was in trouble.

Without thinking, I ran down into the street, holding my body board(俯伏冲浪板) on the way and shouted at a stranger to go inside my house and call the coastguard. My neighbor Moises had heard the screaming as well and was also outside with his body board, so together we rushed to the steps that led down to the sea.

Once we got closer, we discovered the waves had pulled a boy and a girl from the pool and into the open sea. I knew that the nearest boat would take at least 30 minutes to reach us. Waiting for help wasn't a choice. I wasn't used to this sort of emergency--I'd never been trained as a lifeguard-but I didn't think twice about trying to save them. I supposed in a way I wanted to impress everyone: at 19, a deal like that can seem like a good opportunity to show off.

Moises and I dived into the water and it took us 10 minutes to get to them. When we finally reached them, they were almost lifeless with only their heads coming in and out of the water. We could tell they were still alive from their small breaths but it was clear they wouldn't have been able to stay there much longer. I held the boy and pulled him over my board. Moises moved the girl onto his board. We discussed pushing them back to the shore, but we were too far out.

阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

On Wednesday night, it was the closing time of the mall. But there was an hour's work, at least, to get everything cleaned up. It would be 11:00 pm before I finally got home. I hadn't even had time to have dinner. I was starving. My feet ached. My whole body was filled with tiredness. I couldn't wait to go to bed. But it would be only 6 hours before the alarm went off at 5:00 am for my day job.

Things had been tight for over a year now. My husband Paul's business had taken a huge hit. I have a fulltime job at a day care center and somehow do my homework for my college class too. Then I had to work nights at the mall. Without me taking my second job, there wouldn't be enough money to pay the bills. Let alone buy any Christmas presents for our 15yearold daughter, Marie. No one wanted to wake up on Christmas morning to an empty tree.

I barely even saw Paul and Marie anymore. Marie was growing up, but a teenage girl still needs her mom. I worried about her, about us. Was she eating enough? Keeping up with her schoolwork? I wasn't afraid of sacrifices. Everyone had to work hard for the family. I knew I was blessed to have two jobs, when millions of people couldn't find one.

How I hoped to quit my job at the day care center and obtain a fulltime degree. I'd dropped down to one class a term. If I quit that, there was no way I'd find the willpower to try again. Besides, wasn't I always telling Marie to keep hoping and never give up?

My mind went back to the conversation I'd had with Marie earlier. Paul had dropped her off at the mall, where she was getting picked up for a babysitting job. "Remember we're going Christmas shopping this night," she said. "Now I'll even have my own money. See you later. "

The floor was nearly done. The boss asked me to leave.

"I'll bet Anjali knows. Right, Anjali? Why don't you show us since you're the star student, " Deepak taunted(奚落).

Anjali was confused. She wasn't trying to show off. She was just playing table (印度塔不拉鼓), like everyone else. And why was Deepak being so mean lately? Is it because tabla is a boy's thing? She didn't care that people thought it was a boys' instrument. Anjali knew there was no such thing. She danced her fingers across the tabla to perform the composition in confusion. "Ugh!" Anjali heard someone groan, and she stopped playing.

"I guess I don't know it that well after all, "Anjali said sheepishly to the teacher, Mr. Zakir. Her stomach was doing flip-flops. That wasn't true. Not even a little. Mr. Zakir's eyes narrowed. He looked like he was about to say something, but changed his mind. "The recital (演奏会) is next week, everyone. Keep practicing. I will be announcing who will get to perform onstage with me at my next concert! "Anjali had dreamed of a moment like that. She wanted to win the opportunity, but she needed to sort things straight with Deepak first.

As the class was dismissed, Anjali hurried over to Deepak. When she finally made eye contact with him, he purposely looked away and walked off. The next day at school, Anjali overheard Deepak whispering to Mary. "People are only interested because she's the only girl in tabla class and they want her to feel special. She's not that good—" Anjali was furious. She excused herself and went to the bathroom. She took some deep breaths but couldn't relax. Her heart was pounding:

"It's not my fault that people make a big deal about a girl playing tabla. I make mistakes too, but I work really hard. Maybe he should too. He should be less mean and practice more."

"If I play in this concert, no one will talk to me again. He will turn everyone against me."

"I don't want to see a tabla or hear a tabla or play a tabla EVER AGAIN! ! Anjali yelled at the mirror. It was quiet for a moment. She believed it was one of her darkest days ever.

注意:

1. 续写词数应为150个左右;

2. 请按如下格式在答题纸的相应位置作答。

Stepping out of the bathroom, Anjali saw some inspiring posters on the wall.

After the recital, Deepak walked up to Anjali.
