Every previous year on Thanksgiving Day I'd woken up early, filled with excitement, unable to wait for the turkey, pumpkin pie with pecans, and my grandma's famous cheesecake. But I would never forget the lesson that my mother taught me when I was 14 years old. That Thanksgiving, I couldn't find the magic anymore. For some reason the holiday seemed fake (假的). I suddenly felt like Thanksgiving was a big lie. I saw no reason to celebrate.

As my aunts, uncles, cousins, and grandma started to arrive carrying plates of food, baskets of bread, and pitchers of egg nog, I grew more and more angry and frustrated. None of them were really thankful, I realized. The whole thing was a lie!

When my mom called for everyone to take their seats for dinner, I left. I ran into the guest room where no one would look, crying. I was defiant (反抗的) because I wanted to be an honest person but 1 was realizing that Thanksgiving was fake. It didn't feel right to join in the tradition—say something beautiful one by one around the table.

My mom, worried that 1 was absent from the table, came to see what was wrong, "No one is really thankful!" I sobbed, "They just pretend for one day because that's what you're supposed to do!"

My mom sat down next to me and listened wisely. Then she nodded. "You're right," she told me, "it's fake until you find the truth for yourself." She said Thanksgiving was a time to reflect because we don't always get a chance to see loved ones and eat a good meal. Then she left. I didn't listen to her. I was convinced that I could never find joy celebrating again.

Located in the checkroom in Union Station as I am, I see everybody that comes up the stairs. Harry came in a little over three years ago and waited at the head of the stairs for the passengers from the 9: 05 train.

I remember seeing Harry that first evening. He wasn't much more than a thin, anxious kid then. He was all dressed up and I knew he was meeting his girl and that they would be married twenty minutes after she arrived.

Well, the passengers came up and I had to get busy. I didn't look toward the stairs again until nearly time for the 9: 18 and I was very surprised to see that the young fellow was still there.

She didn't come on the 9: 18 either, nor on the 9: 40, and when the passengers from the 10: 02 had all arrived and left, Harry was looking pretty desperate. Pretty soon he came close to my window so I called out and asked him what she looked like.

"She's small and dark," he said, "and nineteen years old and very neat in the way she walks. She has a face," he said, thinking a minute, "that has lots of spirit. I mean she can get mad but she never stays mad for long, and her eyebrows come to a little point in the middle. She's got a brown fur, but maybe she isn't wearing it."

He showed me the telegram he'd received: ARRIVE THURSDAY. MEET ME STATION. LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE. MAY. He told me she was a typist and when he telephoned her former boss, all they know was that she left her job to get married.

Harry met every train for the next three or four days. I could see that they all thought that May had simply played a trick on him. But I never believed that, somehow.

In that first hour I felt I'd lost my senses of sight and hearing; The silence was numbing. I circled the house, going from room to room looking for something to do, asking myself what I can do? What can I do? What can I do? When I encountered Mom in the kitchen, I asked her, too, "What can I do?"

"That's up to you," she said without looking in my direction. Through the day I posed my question to her several more times, getting much the same result. Then late in the afternoon, while she was working at her computer, I dared to ask again. Instantly she swung around to look at me, and I could see that my question had a definite effect on her expression. She looked as though she had been shocked. Her jaws clenched, like she was holding her words between her teeth as they struggled to get out. She looked me straight in the eye, then smiled and said, "Well, are you up for a challenge?"

    "Sure what?"

"Your challenge is to follow the same ant for ten minutes,"

"What is so tough about that?"

She smiled again. "You might be surprised."

When I was ten I was suddenly very sad, for I had to move from the only home I had ever known. My whole life had been spent in that big old house which saw the laughter and tears of four generations.

When the final day came, I ran to the front of the house and sat alone, crying. Suddenly I felt a hand rest on my shoulder. I looked up to see my grandfather. " It isn't easy, is it, Billy?" he said softly, sitting down on the steps beside me.

"Grandpa," I replied how can I ever say goodbye to you and all my friends?"

"Goodbye is such a sad word," he said. "It seems too final, too cool, which has one thing in common: sadness."

He gently took my hand in his." Come with me, my friend," he whispered.

We walked, hand in hand, to his favorite place in the front yard, where there was a huge red rose bush — his beloved rose bush.

"What do you see here, Billy?" he asked.

I looked at the flowers, not knowing what to say," I see something beautiful, Grandpa."

"It isn't just the roses that are beautiful, Billy. It's that special place in your heart that makes them so." His eyes met mine again." Billy, I planted these roses a long time ago—before your mother was even a dream. I put them into the soil the day my first son was born. It was my way of saying thank you to God. That boy's name was Billy. I used to watch him pick roses for his mother.

I saw my grandfather's tears. I had never seen him cry before. His voice became hoarse(嘶哑的).

"One day a terrible war came, and my son, like so many sons, went away to fight a great evil. He and I walked to the train station together... Three months later a telegram came. My son had died in Italy. All I could think of was that the last thing I say to him in his life was goodbye."
