You may get the idea once or twice a year. You come home on a hot summer day, hoping to have a cool bath, and find out there is no water. Then you see how important water is in your everyday life. However, in many parts of the world, water is not just about one's everyday needs.

    In countries like Tanzania, water is hard to get, and the job of collecting water falls on women's shoulders. Girls are often kept home from school to collect water while their brothers stay at school studying. More time spent collecting water means less time for learning. For these girls, "Knowledge is power" is not just words; it is a sad fact in real life. With less time spent at school, their chances of getting well-paid jobs are small. And they often have no voice in important matters, like who to marry. These girls are often married into poor families. They have little money or knowledge to take care of their children, so the children often die young. For the baby girls who are lucky enough to live, their life may still center around "water," just like it did for their mothers.

    In most parts of the world, many students help their schools make less pollution. They join environment club. In an environment club, people work together to make our environment clean.

    Here are some things students often do.

    No-garbage lunches. How many lunch bags do you throw away after lunch? Environment clubs ask students to bring their lunches in bags that can be used again. Every week they will choose the classa that make the least garbage and report them to the whole school.

    No-car day. On a no-car day, nobody comes to school in a car including the students and the teachers. Cars give pollution to us, so remember:

    Walk, jump, bike, or run!

    Use your legs! It's lots of fun!

    Turn off the water! Do you know that some toilets can waste twenty to forty cubic（立方米）of water an hour? In a year, that would fill in a small river. In the environment clubs, students mend（修理）those broken toilets.

Sometimes you just need to have a great party! There's nothing like hosting and seeing all your friends together in the same place. But how do you do it? Here are some ways.

Decides on a theme

Try to come up with a theme that might get everyone excited. Write down different fun activities, types of music, and others that help you think of possible themes. Or don't have a theme at all.

Beijing is known as a large and busy city. But if you walk down one of its main streets into a small alley （巷），you may find something different—Beijing's hutongs!

People say they live in hutongs，but in fact，they live in the buildings on one side of the hutongs. Hutongs are the alleys between houses. 

Beijing has been China's capital city for over 700 years. As the city grows，the number of its people and houses is becoming larger and larger. Now there are more than 6，000 hutongs in Beijing. If all of them were connected end to end

Among all these hutongs，there are certainly some exceptional ones. While most of them are straight，some are curved（弯曲的）. Jiuwan Hutong is the one with the most curves. It's only about 390 meters long. Its name means nine curves，the narrowest hutong in Beijing is called Qianshi Hutong. It is only 40 cm wide at its narrowest point. In this hutong，only one person can pass at a time. 

Beijing people love hutongs because they bring them a lot of fun and relaxation. In the hutongs，people can enjoy the sun，sing songs and play chess with their neighbours. They can talk with others and listen to some stories

Hutongs are not only a symbol of Beijing's culture，but also an important part of China's national culture. So people try to keep them well as historical places of interest.

In Chinese culture, some numbers are believed to be lucky or unlucky based on the Chinese word that the number sounds similar to. 

For example, the word for the number 8 sounds similar to the word for "making a fortune (发财)". So, people consider it a very lucky number. Some people will even spend a lot of money to have 8s in their phone number or on their vehicle license plate (车牌照) number. The opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympics began at 8:08 p. m. on Aug. 8, 2008. 

The number 9 is also a lucky number because of its connection to the emperors of China. There were nine dragons on emperors' robes (龙袍) and Chinese myth held that the dragon had nine children. The number 9 also stands for "long lasting". That' s why a man always proposes (求婚) to a woman with 99 or 999 roses. 

So, what's an unlucky number in China? One example is 4. Many Chinese people see 4 as an unlucky number because it sounds similar to the character for "death". 

Because of this, many buildings skip (跳过) the fourth floor, and simply call it the fifth floor. In Hong Kong, some buildings even skip all floors numbered with 4, such as 4, 14, 24, 34 and all 40-49 floors. Some buildings also skip the 13th floor, as this is considered an unlucky number in some areas in Hong Kong. As a result, a building whose highest floor is 50 may have only 35 physical floors.
