See history through sci-fi

Are science-fiction(sci-fi,科幻) stories only about the future and new technologies? The Space-time Painter(《时空画师》) is different. The novel(小说) won the Hugo Award (雨果奖), the world's top sci-fi award, {#blank#}1{#/blank#} October 21.

Hai Ya, 33, the {#blank#}2{#/blank#} (win) of the award, is a part-time writer. He works in a bank and writes stories after work. He is the {#blank#}3{#/blank#} (three) Chinese writer to win a Hugo award after Liu Cixin in 2015 and Hao Jingfang in 2016.

The Space-time Painter tells a story about a ghost of {#blank#}4{#/blank#} ancient painter. He {#blank#}5{#/blank#}(have) the ability to go into different spaces. This helps him paint {#blank#}6{#/blank#} makes his life hard.

"The Space-Time Painter is a sci-fi story about history," said Hai Ya. History is about the past and sci-fi is about the future. They may seem opposing(相反的), but fantasy(幻想) can be {#blank#}7{#/blank#} (they)bridge.

The novel got many {#blank#}8{#/blank#} (idea) from Qianli Jiangshan Tu. Wang Ximeng from the Song Dynasty(960—1279) {#blank#}9{#/blank#} (paint) it at the age of 18. But so little is known about this talented painter. In the novel, Hai Ya uses his imagination to explore the mysterious(神秘的) Wang's story.

"Also, it brings Chinese {#blank#}10{#/blank#} (tradition)culture and sci-fi together really well," said Tian Xinghai, the editor(编辑) of the novel. "The pride of a nation is also the pride of the world."

A Chinese song contest (比赛) for overseas Chinese was held in London on Sunday. It was organized by the London Chinatown Chinese Association. 

Twenty competitors were divided into three age groups: adults (18-40), juniors (12-17) and children (5-11). The contest awarded one gold, one silver and one bronze prize for each group. The winners will attend the final contest in Beijing this summer. 

In a welcome speech, Jiang Lei, consul general of the Chinese Embassy (中国大使馆总领事) in the UK, said the contest is a great platform to show the talents of overseas Chinese and promote (弘扬) traditional Chinese culture. "2024 marks the Year of the Dragon. It's especially meaningful for overseas Chinese to get together and sing Chinese songs. I believe that these young competitors will move from today's small stage to larger ones in the future," she said. 

Jacky Zhao, a 15-year-old boy, got a silver prize. "It was my first stage performance here, which I think can help me get used to the life in the UK," he said. Li Siyu, in a traditional Chinese horse-face skirt, performed the song Qingming Shanghe Tu. By mixing classical Chinese dance and Peking opera into her performance, Li successfully showed the beauty of the traditional Chinese culture to the world. 

The contest has been held for 14 years since 2011. More than 45,000 competitors from around the world attended it. It has become one of the most popular cultural events for overseas Chinese.

With lots of delicious food, different shops and exciting people, night markets (夜市) are very popular with Chinese people. They become the {#blank#}1{#/blank#}( one) place people would like to go to when they have a trip. People love to go there to spend time with{#blank#}2{#/blank#}(they) friends and family.

 It's easy to get popular snacks (小吃) at night markets with little money! These snacks show the food culture (文化) of {#blank#}3{#/blank#}( differently) places. But now, people can enjoy{#blank#}4{#/blank#}( have) special food at a night market. Eating all the snacks is a delicious way to spend an evening, so it's popular around {#blank#}5{#/blank#} country.

 There {#blank#}6{#/blank#}( be) not only delicious snacks in the markets. People can play games, shop for clothes and buy all kinds of interesting{#blank#}7{#/blank#} ( thing) !I {#blank#}8{#/blank#} ( go) to the night markets last night, and I didn't know where to start.

 Night markets are great places for people to have fun{#blank#}9{#/blank#} enjoy different cultures. They are also very important {#blank#}10{#/blank#}a country's economy (经济) . So, let's have fun at a night market!
