Monthly Talks at London Canal Museum

    Our monthly talks start at 19:30 on the first Thursday of each month except August. Admission is at normal charges and you don't need to book. They end around 21:00.

November 7th

    The Canal Pioneers, by Chris Lewis. James Brindley is recognized as one of the leading early canal engineers. He was also a major player in training others in the art of canal planning and building. Chris Lewis will explain how Brindley made such a positive contribution to the education of that group of early “civil engineers”.

December 5th

    Ice for the Metropolis, by Malcolm Tucker. Well before the arrival of freezers, there was a demand for ice for food preservation and catering, Malcolm will explain the history of importing natural ice and the technology of building ice wells, and how London's ice trade

February 6th

    An Update on the Cotsword Canals, by Liz Payne. The Stroudwater Canal is moving towards reopening. The Thames and Severn Canal will take a little longer. We will have a report on the present state of play.

March 6th

    Eyots and Aits-Thames Islands, by Miranda Vickers. The Thames had many islands. Miranda has undertaken a review of all of them. She will tell us about those of greatest interest.

    It's not easy being a teenager（13 years old ~19 years old）—nor is it easy being the parent of a teenager. You can make your child feel angry, hurt, or misunderstood by what you say without realizing it yourself. It is important to give your child the space he needs to grow while gently letting him know that you you'll still be there for him when he needs you.

    Expect a lot from your child, just not everything. Except for health and safety problems, such as drug use or careless driving; consider everything else open to discussion. If your child is unwilling to discuss something, don't insist he tell you what's on his mind. The more you insist, the more likely that he'll clam up. Instead, let him attempt to solve things by himself. At the same time, remind him that you're always there for him should he seek advice or help. Show respect for your teenager's privacy. Never read him his mail or listen in on personal conversions.

    Teach your teenager that the family phone is for the whole family. If your child talks on the family's telephone for too long, tell him he can talk for15 minutes, but then he must stay off the phone for at least an equal period of time. This not only frees up the line so that other family members can make and receive calls, but teaches your teenager moderation（节制）. Or if you are open to the idea, allow your teenager his own phone that he pays for with his own pocket money or a part –time job.

    Learning to speak English well may be the best thing you can do to improve your life. That's right. If you can communicate in English, you can do the following things:

    Contact (联系) people from all over the world. Talk about your ideas and opinions on Internet discussion groups. Send e-mails to interesting people. Learn about their life and culture.

    Travel more easily. Communicate with people wherever you go—English is spoken in more than 100 countries. Ask directions, have a conversation, or ask for help. Maybe English will save your life some day!

    Push your career forward. If you want a good job in business, technology, or science, get out of that armchair and start learning English now! If you already have a good job, start learning before you lose it! Knowing English will let you do the following things:

    Put “excellent knowledge of English” on your CV (履历). Get your dream job, and earn more money.

    Gain technical knowledge. English is the language of technology, especially high technology like computer science, and medicine. If you're going to read about technology, you'll probably have to do it in English.

    Be a world-class businessman or woman. It's simple. International business is done in English. And all business today is international. So if you want to play, you have to know English—to contact other business people, go to conferences, and read international business newspapers and magazines, ect.

    Become a better scientist. Contact scientists from other countries, go to international conferences, and visit research centers abroad. Learn about new scientific discoveries by reading papers, books, and magazines.

    Use your computer more effectively. Most computer applications are in English, so you will understand them better—and become a better employee.

    Every year from March to October, Christian Moullec, also known as "Birdman," takes to the skies aboard his adapted light aircraft. However, the 58-year-old Frenchman's daily 30-minute flight is not just to enjoy the impressive views, but to guide flocks (鸟群) of lesser white-fronted geese (小白额雁) through safe migration paths which the birds can teach future generations.

    His deed began in 1995 when he noticed their declining population in the wilds of Lapland, Sweden. To prevent their numbers from dropping further, Moullec tried to get the threatened species to follow him along migration routes that would protect them from bird hunters.

    However, getting grown geese to follow his lead proved challenging. As young geese imitate and follow whomever they view as their parent, Moullec decided to raise the geese from birth.

    To help raise funds and awareness of his job to protect not just the geese but birds worldwide, Moullec often allows paying tourists to join him on the 30-minute-long flights aboard his aircraft. In addition to the trained birds flying alongside them, visitors, who come from as far as a 15-hour plane flight away, are treated to a variety of crane and geese species as well as breathtaking views of castles and cities.

    He often brings his camera along for the flights, capturing photos not just for their beauty, but for what they describe. Moullec believes the use of agricultural chemicals has done harm to wild European birds, with more than a third disappearing in the last 30 years. "It's a disaster," he said. "My beautiful images with flying birds should be used to tell this story."

Heritage Education

China's "Cultural and Natural Heritage Day" falls on the second Saturday of June every year. Many celebrations are 1 on the day. There is no 2 that different kinds of celebrating 3 across the country will arouse(唤醒) public awareness of the importance of cultural heritage protection and 4 the young people to love the fine 5 culture of the motherland. 

China faces a heavy task to protect and rescue its cultural 6 . We need to consider seriously the harm of the lack of awareness about cultural heritage protection. 7 , heritage education is one of our main approaches(方法). People cannot 8 value cultural heritage if they do not know why it is important or how to protect it. Over the past several years, the protection centre has 9 over a hundred educational seminars(研讨会) to different groups, such as schools, government offices, 10 the general public. Many people have attended the seminars. Typically, each seminar lasts two to three hours and 11 of an informative presentation, 12 by a longer question-and-answer session and discussion. Each attender 13 limited knowledge of cultural heritage considered it to be just the Forbidden City and the Great Wall. People often think that the duty only 14 to the government. So "Cultural and Natural Heritage Day" will be a welcome 15 to educate people on world heritage protection. 

The United Kingdom has several names and many people {#blank#}1{#/blank#}（confuse) by them. In the 16th century, the nearby country of Wales was joined to the Kingdom of England. Later,the country Scotland and the Kingdom of Ireland joined the country {#blank#}2{#/blank#}（form) the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland.

{#blank#}3{#/blank#}（final) , in the 20th century,the southern part of Ireland broke away from the United Kingdom, {#blank#}4{#/blank#}resulted in the full name today:the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

The four countries {#blank#}5{#/blank#} (belong) to the United Kingdom work together in some areas. They use the same flag, {#blank#}6{#/blank#}(know) as the Union Jack, as well as share the same currency and military defence. However,there are some {#blank#}7{#/blank#}（different)between them.

The United Kingdom has a long and interesting history to explore,which can help you learn more about the country and its traditions. Wherever you go in the UK,you are surrounded {#blank#}8{#/blank#}evidence of four different groups of people who took over at different times throughout history.

The first group, the Romans, came in {#blank#}9{#/blank#}first century. Some of their great achievements included building towns and roads. Next,the Anglo-Saxons arrived in the fifth century. They introduced the beginnings of the English language. The Vikings came in the eighth century, left behind lots of new vocabulary. The last group were the Normans. They had castles {#blank#}10{#/blank#} (build) all around England,and made changes to the legal system.
