By the time Jill got to a little town, every hotel room {#blank#}1{#/blank#}（take）. “You've got to give me a room somewhere,” he said to the manager at the hotel, “{#blank#}2{#/blank#}just a bed — I don't care where.”

    “Well, I do have a double room with one guest,”{#blank#}3{#/blank#} (admit) the manager, “and he might be glad to split（分担）the cost. But to tell you {#blank#}4{#/blank#}truth, he snores {#blank#}5{#/blank#}loudly that people in the next room have complained {#blank#}6{#/blank#}(late). I'm not sure if it would be worth it to you.”

    “No problem.” Jill assured him, “I'll take {#blank#}7{#/blank#}”

The next morning Jill came down to breakfast bright-eyed.

    “How did you sleep” asked the manager.

    “Never better.”

    The manager was impressed. “No problem with the other guy snoring, then?”

    “No, I shut him up{#blank#}8{#/blank#}no time,” said Jill.

    “How did you manage that?” asked the manager. “Did you give him some medicine to stop the snoring?”

    “No, I didn't. But here is {#blank#}9{#/blank#}I did. He was already in bed when I went into the room,” Jill explained. “I went over, gave him a kiss on the forehead, and said, ‘Good night, beautiful,' and he sat up all night {#blank#}10{#/blank#}(watch) me.”

    Paul Lucas can often be seen walking around the city of San Francisco. Sometimes people are {#blank#}1{#/blank#} (surprise) to see him walking without any shoes or socks,{#blank#}2{#/blank#} Lucas doesn't mind at all. He likes to walk barefoot, and {#blank#}3{#/blank#} do 640 other members of Dirty Sole Society, the club that Lucas {#blank#}4{#/blank#} (start) years ago. Lucas' idea for this is to encourage others to live {#blank#}5{#/blank#} (free)－free of shoes.

    According to Lucas, the barefoot life has many {#blank#}6{#/blank#} (advantage). The most important is simply that it feels good. He also says that walking barefoot allows you to experience the world directly by {#blank#}7{#/blank#} (touch) it with your feet. In addition, the feet do not smell so much {#blank#}8{#/blank#} they stay dry,{#blank#}9{#/blank#} (make) it hard for bacteria(细菌)  to grow. And, of course, walking barefoot keeps your feet in good shape, so it's actually {#blank#}10{#/blank#} (healthy) than wearing shoes.

    In many people's opinion, man's first real invention,{#blank#}1{#/blank#}is also one of the most important inventions in history, is the wheel. All transportation and every machine in the world depend{#blank#}2{#/blank#}it. The wheel is the{#blank#}3{#/blank#}(simple) yet perhaps the most remarkable of all{#blank#}4{#/blank#}(invention) because there are no wheels in nature.{#blank#}5{#/blank#}, then, did man come to invent the wheel? Perhaps some early hunters found that the body of {#blank#}6{#/blank#}heavy animal could be rolled through the forest on logs (圆木) more{#blank#}7{#/blank#}(easy) than they could carry it. However, the logs{#blank#}8{#/blank#}them) weigh a lot.

    It must have taken a great prehistoric thinker to imagine two thin slices of log connected, at their centers by a string stick. This would roll along just {#blank#}9{#/blank#}the logs did, yet be much lighter and easier{#blank#}10{#/blank#}(handle). Thus the wheel and axle came into being and with them the first carts.

    A few months ago I left my hometown for Canada to study. I felt nervous because I was going to {#blank#}1{#/blank#}new place with new people. What worried my at first was that I couldn't speak English {#blank#}2{#/blank#}(fluent), and I also couldn't understand{#blank#}3{#/blank#}(they) customs. Everything was different {#blank#}4{#/blank#}my own country. I had to deal with everything alone.

    It was a sad moment {#blank#}5{#/blank#} I had to say goodbye to my family and friends at the airport. Suddenly, I felt unwilling {#blank#}6{#/blank#}(leave) my hometown because I grew up there and had wonderful{#blank#}7{#/blank#} (memory) of the familiar place. However, I know studying abroad was a {#blank#}8{#/blank#}(decide) that I made myself. I had to accept the challenge.

    By now I{#blank#}9{#/blank#}(get)used to the new life here already, though I'm looking forward to{#blank#}10{#/blank#}(spend) the coming vacation with my old friends back home.

    Any bird that crossed his path would be eaten by Rex, a German shepherd. Rex{#blank#}1{#/blank#}(rescue) from his previous shelter, where he was going to be put down after a biting incident. Last year, he{#blank#}2{#/blank#}(eventual) arrived at Puriton Horse and Animal Rescue.

    Geraldine was a goose abandoned by owners who could no longer put up {#blank#}3{#/blank#} her. She wasn't exactly the picture of {#blank#}4{#/blank#}(warm), either, when she arrived at the same shelter three months ago. The dog and the goose were individually given labels like cruel and dangerous. Neither seemed particularly harmonious with humans or even members of their own species.

    But when the two {#blank#}5{#/blank#}(annoy) creatures were offered a chance to hang out together, something magical happened. They chased each other when first {#blank#}6{#/blank#}(introduce), but Geraldine stood up for herself and that was that. They just fell in love with each other.

    “I've been doing rescue work since 1997 and seen all {#blank#}7{#/blank#}(kind) of strange animal behavior, but I've never seen anything like this,” said Sheila Brislin, {#blank#}8{#/blank#}is the founder of the shelter. “It's so amusing to see them because they love each other to bits. They are very affectionate. She just{#blank#}9{#/blank#}(run) around alongside him all day long and whenever we take him for {#blank#}10{#/blank#}walk in the woods she has to come, too.”

    Perigueux is the capital town of the Dordogne region (地区) in France. Up to now, I {#blank#}1{#/blank#} (live) in Perigueux for nearly six months. So I think I'd let you know some of {#blank#}2{#/blank#} best things to do here.

    The cathedral (教堂) is a very {#blank#}3{#/blank#} (impress) landmark in Perigueux. It is a big building with five large domes (穹顶) {#blank#}4{#/blank#} (form) its roof. Another must-see is the Vesunna Museum, which explains the origin (起源) of the town from Gallo-Roman times and has many amazing old {#blank#}5{#/blank#} (object) on show. You can also find the remains of a Roman amphitheater (竞技场) in a park, and old towers {#blank#}6{#/blank#} formed the town's old defenses. You will probably find a(n) {#blank#}7{#/blank#} (hide) café or restaurant where you can enjoy a speciality food or, if you are really hungry, a three-course lunch.

    In summer, the Dordogne region is a hot spot for tourists {#blank#}8{#/blank#} (visit). Brantome is a town known as the “Venice of the region” because of {#blank#}9{#/blank#} (it) many beautiful bridges crossing the river. In the town of Sarlat, you can buy local products. The town of Montignac is famous {#blank#}10{#/blank#} the nearby Lascaux caves, which contain cave paintings created by people who lived over 17,000 years ago!
