Extreme athletes have been using wingsuits (翼装) to fly for many years. However, the pull of gravity makes it impossible to speed up or fly higher. To push past the limitations, Peter Salzmann teamed up with German car maker BMW. The result is an electrified wingsuit, which allows flyers to rise to higher altitudes at the speed of up to 186 miles per hour!

The 33-year-old professional wingsuit pilot first thought of creating the design in 2017, "At the time, I was developing suits for skydiving with a friend," he explains. "One evening after a day of testing, we threw out lots of ideas about how we could improve performance. One of them was a supporting motor-and it's an idea I just couldn't shake off. I found the idea of being able to jump from my local mountain wearing the wingsuit and land in my garden exciting."

To help with the process, Salzmann reached out to the experts at BMW's Designworks Studio. It took the team three years and multiple test jumps to perfect the design. The result is an updated version of wingsuit with two 5-inch propellers (螺旋桨), Powered by a battery, the propellers can be controlled using an on/off switch and even stopped mid-flight using the emergency button, if the flyer encounters an airplane or a flock of birds.

On November 6, 2020, Salzmann, wearing his hi-tech suit, leaped from a helicopter from an altitude of 10,000 feet to soar around the mountain peaks. The expert pilot fired up the electric motors and rocketed forward, gliding above four mountain peaks. The task completed, the pilot opened his parachute (降落伞) and gently landed.

It is unclear if Salzmann and BMW plan to make the electrified wingsuits available to the general public. But, one can always hope!

Many years ago, when I was fresh out of school and working in Denver,I was driving to my parents' home in Missouri for Christmas. I stopped at a gas station about 50 miles from Oklahoma City, where I was planning to stop and visit a friend. While I was standing in line at the cash register(收款台),I said hello to an older couple who were also paying for gas.

I took off , but had gone only a few miles when black smoke poured from the back of my car. I stopped and wondered what I should do. A car pulled up behind me. It was the couple I had spoken to at the gas station. They said they would take me to my friend's. We chatted on the way into the city, and when I got out of the car,the husband gave me his business card.

I wrote him and his wife a thankyou note for helping me. Soon afterward,I received a Christmas present from them. Their note that came with it said that helping me had made their holidays meaningful.

Years later,I drove to a meeting in a nearby town in the morning. In late afternoon,I returned to my car and found that I'd left the lights on all day,and the battery(电池) was dead. Then I noticed that the Friendly Ford dealership—a shop selling cars—was right next door. I walked over and found two salesmen in the showroom. “Just how friendly is Friendly Ford?” I asked and explained my trouble. They quickly drove a pickup truck to my car and started it. They would accept no payment,so when I got home,I wrote them a note to say thanks. I received a letter back from one of the salesmen. No one had ever taken the time to write him and say thank you,and it meant a lot,he said.

“Thank you”—two powerful words. They're easy to say and mean so much.

When you think of the future, you imagine having some sort of robot friend in your life.Musio,a new robot unveiled recently,is something like that.

Musio is an artificial intelligence software that runs on Google's Android mobile OS,and is packaged in the form of a round little robot with pointy ears.It doesn't move around, but it has a digital screen for its eyes and heart that are used to express the robot's emotions. It also comes with a remote pointer device, called Sophy, which is used to detect objects that trigger different interactions with Musio.

The robot was created by AKA,a company specializing in machine learning and natural language processing. It's designed to interact with its users with a voice interface, much like you'd use Siri. But Musio's creators,Wilmington, Delaware-based AKA Study, stress that this is a much different experience than using Siri—Musio can have interactive conversations and remember information about its users, sort of like a little person.Musio can do all sorts of things like controlling home automation and it has a number of integrated sensors. The robot is also programmable and it is able to speak naturally. It is designed to share its emotions via faces on its LCD screen. There are three versions of Musio that vary on hardware. The Simple version has a 1.2GHz dual core processor,1800 mAh battery, 16GB storage and isn't internet connected. It can only recall the last five conversations it has.

Beyond running on the open source Android platform,Musio is also Arduino compatible. The Arduino platform is an open source electronics platform built to be easy to program. Its purpose is to take different inputs through a suite of sensors and then relay commands to lights, motors,or actuators as a result.Musio is also compatible with the Zigbee wireless standard used by a range of smart home devices,so it's possible that developers could intertwine the robot with other appliances and turn it into a sort of voice-activated smart home hub with a personality.

And there are several educational accessories that come with Musio, such as flash cards and a fold-out accordion board book.Using Sophy, the pointer,Musio can interact with these objects thanks to a Bluetooth low-energy connection and a special code implanted in the printed materials.

There is a story about a man who lost his legs and left arm in an accident. After the accident, only a finger and thumb on his right hand remained.

He was a brilliant, creative, and educated man. He had gained a lot of experience while traveling around the world, so he became very depressed after his accident. He was afraid that he would spend the rest of his life suffering and would no longer be able to spend his life in a meaningful way. Then, he realized that he still had partial function of his right hand and could still write even though it was very difficult. An idea occurred to him. “Why not write to other people who need encouragement?”

He wrote to the prison ministry about sending letters to the prisoners. The prison minister replied, “Writing to the prisoners is acceptable, but your letters will not be answered.”

Filled with excitement, the man knew he could write his letters. He began sending one-way messages of God's love, hope, strength, and encouragement. He wrote twice a week, testing his strength and ability to the limit. He poured his heart and soul into his words and shared his experience, sense of humor, optimism, and faith.

It was difficult to write those letters, especially without hope of a reply. One day he received a letter from the prison ministry. It was a short note from the officer who monitored and checked the prison mail.

The letter said, “Please write on the best paper you can afford. Your letters are passed from cell (囚房) to cell until they literally (逐字地) fall to pieces!”

No matter what circumstances life may present, we all have unique experiences, abilities, and God-given talents. We can discover ways to reach others who desperately need messages of encouragement and strength.

My son has poliomyelitis (小儿麻痹)and he suffered from it a lot. When he was young, my wife and I took him to see so many doctors and got different kinds of treatments. But still, he couldn't walk like a normal kid.

So he was laughed at by his peers for his walking style. His tears burnt our eyes like sulphuric acid (硫酸 ). Then, he became afraid of going to school. He wouldn't go anymore.

One night, my wife had a breakdown and shouted at him, “I tell you, my kid, you might be like this forever. You are a freak in other people's eyes, and perhaps it would never change. But in my eyes, in your dad's eyes, you are not a freak! You are not! Even if you are, we love you and we will love you forever!” My son spoke nothing for two days. He didn't eat or sleep. We could read he was hurt. We hoped something wonderful would fall in our family. On the third morning, he struggled to walk to my car, with his school bag in his hand of course. He raised his head high and hugged me, saying “want to go to school. Nothing will beat me.”

You know, from then on, he was never afraid of being mocked or despised anymore. If he couldn't avoid these looks, he chose to look at them in the eyes. Later, something nice really happened and my son went to MIT. When he was asked how he managed to bear the pressure, he said, “Because of my parents.”

My dear fellows, if you care too much about how other people look at you or what their opinions are, you will never become what you want to be.
