One day a small boy was walking along the street in London. His name was Tom. It was a cold winter day in 1900. That day he could have no breakfast 1lunch. He wanted to buy bread, but he didn't2any money.

    His father died when he was very young. His mother was often very ill, so she could not 3Tom and his brother, Mike. They had to work to help their sick mother.

    He was small 4 his dream was very big. His wish was to be a great man in the world of film. So he worked very hard on singing and dancing. Then, one day a man came to him and asked, "5 for my film?" "Certainly," he answered. And he did his 6in it. Many people said, "We have never seen  7 interesting film."

    Thirty years 8 , this same boy was among the most famous people in the world. He made many good 9. A lot of people liked 10.

    Tom is a student in No. 5 Middle School. He likes nice shoes. But his parents don't have much money to 1 them for him. So he always goes to the 2 and look at them for hours.

    3 a Sunday afternoon, Tom comes to the shoe store again. Looking down at his 4 shoes, Tom feels unhappy. He really wants to have a new pair of shoes for his birthday, 5 he knows that his parents can't buy them for him.

    Tom doesn't go home because he doesn't want his 6 to see his sad face. He goes to the park to relax himself. There he 7 a girl sitting in a wheelchair(轮椅). Tom wants to know 8 the girl is like that. He comes to the girl and finds that 9 has no feet! He looks down at his feet and says to himself, “It's much better to be without(没有)shoes than without feet.” Tom goes home happily, thinking he is happier than many children.

    Being 10 is the first thing for everyone. Nothing is more important than that.

My first day of school

    Fear started taking over. I was walking into my first school in America. I had a long journey from India to join my parents, who had been here for three years, hoping America would help my future.

    On the first day, I was already confused because back in India the teachers switch(转换) according to periods while most of the students have the same periods, but here it was totally1.

    With anxiety(焦虑) on one hand and fear on the other, I opened the door 2. Since I was a bit late, everyone's eyes were on me as I entered the room. Without paying attention to them, I went straight to the teacher and asked if this was the right class. With a soft voice he answered, "Yes." His voice 3 me a little. Then he asked me to choose a seat. I didn't actually want to 4a seat. In India we had assigned (分配的) seats, so I never needed to worry about that.

    I was confused about which buildings to go to, but I 5to get to my classes without asking anyone. I was very confused about when I would have lunch. It was already noon. The bell rang and I entered my next class. Again, I asked the teacher if I was in the right class. Then I chose a seat, sat down and waited for the6 to begin. The teacher looked at me with a puzzled face, "Why don't you go for lunch?" "But the bell just rang," I said. "That is the lunch bell," she said. Without another word I 7for the cafeteria( 餐厅) . I felt lucky because we didn't have this in India.

    Every confusion seemed like a difficulty I had to get through to reach my 8. At the end of the day, at the school gate I found my bus and sat down inside happily. I was thinking, today wasn't so bad. I couldn't wait for the next day to come.

    He was pleased to learn that Chibi knew all the places where the wild grapes and wild potatoes grew. He was amazed to 1 how much Chibi knew about all the flowers in our class garden. He liked Chibi's black and white drawings and put them up on the wall to be. 2 He like Chibi's own handwriting, which no one but Chibi could read, and he put that up on the wall.

    But, when Chibi appeared on the stage at the talent show of that year, no one could 3 his eyes. "Who is that?" "What can that stupid do up there?"

    Until Mr. Isobe announced that Chibi was going to imitate (模仿). the voices of crows. "Voices?" "Voices of crows?"

    4 he imitated the voices of newly hatched (孵化的) crows. And he made the mother crow's voice. Then he imitated the father crow's voice. He showed how crows cry early in the morning. He showed how crows cry when the village people have some unhappy accidents. He showed how crows 5when they are happy and cheerful. Everyone's mind was taken to the far mountainside from which Chibi probably came to school.

    Chibi made very special 6 deep down in his throat to imitate a crow in an old tree in the end. Now everybody could imagine 7 the far and lonely place where Chibi lived with his family. Then Mr. Isobe explained how Chibi had learned those calls- leaving his home for school at sunrise, and arriving home at sunset, every day for six long years.

    Every one of us cried, thinking how much we had been8 to Chibi all those long years.

    He was a boy beyond our usual imagination!

    Bill and Cathy wanted to go on a holiday. They chose a place called Maldives（马尔代夫）. And they decided {#blank#}1{#/blank#} there for two weeks in spring，because the {#blank#}2{#/blank#} there was perfect at that time. They thought they would have a {#blank#}3{#/blank#} trip. But their tip was more like a nightmare（噩梦）!

    The plane {#blank#}4{#/blank#} off twelve hours later because of the bad weather. And they couldn't fly to Maldives {#blank#}5{#/blank#} there was a storm. They had to fly to the capital city instead. There they stayed in a small hotel near the airport.

    The hotel was next to the sea, {#blank#}6{#/blank#} the sea was so dirty that they couldn't swim in it. The food in the hotel was awful, too. For breakfast there {#blank#}7{#/blank#} only bread and milk! Because of the bad weather, they had to stay {#blank#}8{#/blank#} another night in the small hotel. And they had {#blank#}9{#/blank#} to do. It was so boring. {#blank#}10{#/blank#} , they arrived in Maldives three days later. And someone told them the weather there had been wonderful all the time!

Rock climbing（攀岩） did not become a sport until late in the 1900s. But now it has become a popular outdoor activity. While rock climbing may still be necessary for mountain climbing，most people just climb low mountains for fun. 

If you have ever done rock climbing，you will know that it is not a very easy sport. Indoor and outdoor rock climbing both need practice. What most people don't know is that rock climbing is one of the sports that depend on your body and mind（意志）. 

To climb successfully，one must use wonderful skills. One of the important rules is to always have three parts of your body on the rock face. Another important rule is that your arms only hold you close to the rock face while your legs are pushing you up，the closer you are to the rock face，the easier it is to climb. 

Rock climbing is a wonderful sport. Once you start to learn how to climb，you'll find more fun. People who like games such as chess playing or problem—solving may love rock climbing，because they are nearly the same in the way of thinking. For anyone who wants to get into beautiful shape，rock climbing is a fun and good way. Anyone who enjoys a difficult game and loves the outdoors should think of taking rock climbing as a new hobby.
