Larry Ritsema was out for an early morning jog around his neighborhood one day. On a quiet street, he began to feel weak. Suddenly, everything went black. Larry fell to the ground.

    Less than a minute later, Tom Alguire passed by on his bicycle. He caught sight of a man lying on the roadside, so he jumped off his bike and ran over. He recognized Larry immediately, because he had been Larry's doctor for nearly 20 years.

    Dr. Tom felt for a pulse (脉搏) at first. Finding none, he began to give Larry first aid. It wouldn't restart Larry's heart, but it would keep the blood flowing until someone else arrive d. Tom could only hope someone would come by soon, at around six o'clock in the morning on a holiday weekend. Tom couldn't stop pressing Larry's chest to run for help — Larry's brain cells would die without the blood. And Tom didn't have a cell phone with him.

    Soon, a car did drive by. But the driver ignored Tom's appeal for help. What was he going to do? Tom was very worried. Finally, another car came down the road, driven by Michael Saliot, a U.S. Coast Guard Officer. Michael wasn't one to pass up a chance to help a person in need. He quickly dialed 911.

   Doctors then found that Larry had suffered a heart attack and there were severe blockages in two of Larry's major arteries (动脉). Only the timely arrival of Dr. Tom saved his life.

   How did Dr. Tom happen to be bicycling that morning, down that quiet street? It turned out that as Tom rode, his bike chain fell off. He spent about eight minutes fitting it back; otherwise, he would have seen nothing of Larry's problem.

    "Some secrets are hidden from health," wrote John Updike in his poem "Fever".

    I have experienced the truth of Updike's observation. My excellent health kept me from seeing some things—things that became secrets of sort.

    One relates to my son Chris. When I lost my health in March, I discovered something I had missed about him.

    Christopher has been a scholar and athlete through high school. He has behaved responsibly, engaged in community service. He has had an impressive peer group of  serious students.

    While I saw these things, I had missed before what I experienced while in hospital. Early on, Christopher offered the clearest and most forceful words about my need to be positive and to fight acute leukemia(急性白血病). He never left the room after a visit without making me promise that I would be mentally tough and positive.

    During the first week, he showed his own mental toughness, researching leukemia and learning what the chances were. He even stopped my doctor outside the room, introduced himself and asked directly what he thought of my chances. He processed the answer without overreaction.

    Christopher did admonish(劝告) me against my choice of words the first week at home. I had moved back into my room from weighing myself, discovering a thin figure I did not know. I announced to him and my wife, “dead man walking”. I thought it was a way to lighten the obvious. He saw it as negativity and was strongly against such thinking and talking.

    When I resisted taking medicine sometimes, Christopher formed a “good-cop-bad-cop” team with his mother. Betsy gently and patiently encouraged. He directly and forcefully insisted. He always made the logical arguments for why I needed to take some awful pills.

    My health had hidden something from me; my ill-health helped me to see it.

    A man had a dream in which he was told where he could find fantastic wealth in a remote place. When he awoke, he immediately set off to find it. After a long journey full of danger and hardship, he arrived at the place in his dream. A local man who had heard about the dreamer's purpose laughed loud and long, saying that he had dreamed three times about a house where great treasure was buried under a fountain. It made the dreamer realize that the place the local was describing was his very own yard. He returned home and found the treasure.

    Like the man in this tale, the Chinese movie industry has been on a long journey to find its place in the world. In 1994, “The Fugitive” became the first major Hollywood film to be shown in the country in decades. Audiences were attracted by the movie's fast pace and sound effects, and it proved to be a great success. Since then, the Chinese film industry has balanced a complex (复杂的) relationship with Hollywood.

    Although there has been a sharp slowdown in China's box-office numbers—movie-ticket revenue rose just 3.7 percent in 2017 after growing by an average of 35 percent per year from 2011 to 2016~the country still has a huge movie market, with theaters continuing to expand into more rural areas and audiences proving that they have a strong desire for Hollywood action films. So much so that recently, Hollywood has even started to make movies with China in mind, casting Chinese movie stars with great box-office power and changing the plots of films to win over Chinese moviegoers.

    Many in China's film industry, from young scriptwriters (编剧) to senior critics, know Hollywood's dramatic structure all too well and support its styles. And many American offerings introduced in the Chinese market, regardless of quality, continue to do well among Chinese audiences, especially with young people, whose tastes and viewing habits have been shaped by Hollywood movies and TV shows. Like audiences in other developing countries, those in China tend to have a worldview filtered (过滤) by and focused on the United States, even though the United States doesn't mean the whole world and Hollywood isn't the world's only movie industry.

    Like an ocean that refuses no rivers, China's movie industry will continue to influence and allow itself to be influenced by its international counterparts (对应的人或物). China needs the United States, and the United States needs China. But at the moment, a large difference exists in that very few Chinese movies are able to enter the American market and attract a significant audience. Chinese audiences provide Hollywood with huge profits, but what does China's film industry gain in return?

    On summer days，uniformed and professional storytellers at 13 storytelling benches throughout Philadelphia's Historic District entertain visitors with true，free，three-to-five minute tales about the colonial(殖民的)era as part of Once Upon a Nation. Children can pick up a Story Flag at any storytelling bench，and then collect a star from every storyteller on their journeys. Flags with all the stars can get free rides on the Parx Liberty Carousel at Franklin Square.

    Something very strange and mysterious was going on in Sesemann's house. Every morning, when the servants went downstairs, they found the front door wide open. During the first few days that this happened, every room and corner was searched in great alarm to see if anything had been stolen, but not a thing in the house had been touched. The door was doubly locked at night, and for further security the wooden bar was fastened across it; but it was no good – next morning the door again stood open. One servant even claimed he had seen a white figure standing at the top of the steps and then all in a minute it disappeared.

    Mr. Sesemann told his old friend, a doctor, what had happened in his house. That evening they decided to wait for the ghost. One o'clock struck. There was not a sound. Suddenly the doctor lifted his finger. "Hush! Don't you hear something?" They both listened, and they distinctly heard the bar softly pushed aside and then the key turned in the lock and the door opened. They stepped into the hall.

    "Who is there?" thundered the doctor in a voice that echoed through the hall, as the two men advanced with lights and weapons towards the figure. It turned and gave a low cry. There stood Heidi, with bare feet, staring with wild eyes and trembling from head to foot. The two men looked at one another in surprise. "Child, why did you come down here?" said Sesemann. White with terror, and hardly able to make her voice heard, Heidi answered, "I don't know." The doctor gently took the child by the hand upstairs.

    Then the doctor sat down besides her and asked her some questions in a kind voice. Later he went downstairs. "Sesemann," he said, "let me first tell you that the child is a sleep-walker; secondly, the child is consumed with homesickness. Something must be done at once."

    People generally like to pick out the best-looking fruits and vegetables when shopping for produce, but Canadian supermarket chain Loblaws is attracting customers with badly-shaped and imperfect produce at the price of 30% lower than normal-looking ones.

    A trial run of the ugly food line, named "Naturally Imperfect", began with only apples and tomatoes to choose from. Consumer(消费者) demand has been so huge that Loblaws is going to introduce more ugly vegetables and fruit like onions and mushrooms.

    All the produce that will be sold through Naturally Imperfect would otherwise have been used in juices, sauces, or soups, or have not been harvested at all. The director Dan Branson explained that this program benefited both food producers who would otherwise have to let abnormal produce go to waste, and consumers who could buy fresh produce at low prices. And he was right, considering how popular the line has become.

    "It really went well beyond our expectation," Branson said. "I think it really spoke to the fact that Canadians are out there really looking for some Choices."

    Of course, Canadians know that beauty is more than skin(外皮) deep, and they also recognize that they get the same flavor and nutritional (营养的) benefits in spite of appearances. The positive response to the offering of apples and potatoes showed the opportunity to expand the line and offer more choices at a greater price to Canadian families.

    "If you grow produce in your backyard, there will be a lot of produce that won't look as pretty as what you will see in a grocery store", said Branson. "And nature doesn't grow everything perfectly. I'd like to think if somebody were to take a NO Name Naturally Imperfect apple, put it right beside a No. 1 apple, close his eyes and eat them, there would be no difference."
