I have finally been able to become an active volunteer(n.志愿者) with the Free Meal Program in the city {#blank#}1{#/blank#} I live. I will volunteer(v.做自愿者) at weekends and {#blank#}2{#/blank#} (hopeful), I will help feed less fortunate people at the Rescue Center every week. At the thought of this, I can't feel {#blank#}3{#/blank#} (happy)!

    I have applied at several other places {#blank#}4{#/blank#} (volunteer), like SPCA and my local hospital. There is a great sense of {#blank#}5{#/blank#} (accomplish) and pure joy in giving back to the community, helping others and in showing kindness. This is one of the things I live {#blank#}6{#/blank#}! I want to do what I can for society and help make a difference. I wish that many {#blank#}7{#/blank#} (inspire) to devote a bit of their time to local organizations in the future. There's always {#blank#}8{#/blank#} strong need for people to come together and help out fellow humans and animals too! When {#blank#}9{#/blank#} (do) voluntary work, we do our part in helping others. Meanwhile, volunteering {#blank#}10{#/blank#} (promote) our social awareness. We all believe volunteering is rewarding and look forward to more of it.

    Have you ever told a story about someone but forgotten his or her name? Not {#blank#}1{#/blank#} (worry)! In English, we have special names to replace it, so your story doesn't come to a sudden stop.

    In the US, if a name has been forgotten, {#blank#}2{#/blank#} (simple) say the name John Doe for a man, or Jane Doe for a woman.     However in England, unknown people are called John Smith. This is {#blank#}9{#/blank#} John has always been one of the most common first {#blank#}10{#/blank#} (name) in English. And Smith is the most common family name. So next time you forget someone's name, you know what to say.

    Recently I learned from the newspaper that normal universities（师范大学） {#blank#}1{#/blank#}  (belong) to the Education Department would recruit（招收）some students free. As {#blank#}2{#/blank#} return, the students must serve as a primary school teacher for 10 years in his or her hometown. I feel that is good news for me and I'll contact the universities to get {#blank#}3{#/blank#} (admit). First of all, as a farmer's child, my family's living condition is not so good {#blank#}4{#/blank#} I can not afford the high tuition of regular universities. I'm so happy to get the chance {#blank#}5{#/blank#} (become) a college student {#blank#}6{#/blank#} then continue my study. Secondly, serving as a teacher is my dream since I was a child. I {#blank#}7{#/blank#} （bring) up in a mountain village. Many of my little friends got poor education and they had to get to work as a teenager.     In 1977, a dead author of detective stories saved the life of a 19-month-old baby in a most {#blank#}1{#/blank#}(usual) way. The author was Agatha Christie, one of the most successful writers of detective stories in the world.

    In June that year, a baby girl became {#blank#}2{#/blank#}(serious) ill in Qatar, near Saudi Arabia.      "Excuse me," said the nurse, "{#blank#}6{#/blank#} I think the baby is suffering from thallium(铊) poisoning. "

    "What makes you think that?" Dr. Brown asked. "Thallium poisoning is extremely rare."

"I read a detective novel {#blank#}7{#/blank#} Agatha Christie a few days ago,” the nurse explained, "and in the book, somebody suffers from thallium poisoning, and all the symptoms {#blank#}8{#/blank#}(describe). They're exactly {#blank#}9{#/blank#} same as the baby's."

    The tests showed that the baby had indeed been poisoned by thallium, a rare metallic substance{#blank#}10{#/blank#} (use) in making special glass. Once they knew the cause of the illness, the doctors were able to give the baby the correct treatment. She soon recovered and was sent back home.

    We have all kinds of festivals. Ancient people held festivals to {#blank#}1{#/blank#} the end of winter, planting in spring and harvest in autumn. Today's festivals have many {#blank#}2{#/blank#} : some are {#blank#}3{#/blank#}, some seasonal and some for special people or events.

    Some festivals are in memory of the dead or to satisfy the {#blank#}4{#/blank#}. 0n the important feast day in Mexico, besides {#blank#}5{#/blank#} food, flowers and gifts to the dead, people eat food in the shape of skull and cakes with "bones" on them

    People hold festivals as an honor to famous people, like the Dragon Boat Festival which honors the famous {#blank#}6{#/blank#} , Qu Yuan.

    Harvest and Thanksgiving festivals are held in many countries. In European countries, some people might win {#blank#}7{#/blank#} for their farm produce in competitions. On Mid-Autumn festivals in China and some Asian countries, people {#blank#}8{#/blank#} the moon and have moon cakes.

    Chinese New Year is one of the most {#blank#}9{#/blank#} and important festivals. People look forward to eating dumplings, giving lucky money in red paper and playing dragon dances.

    To sum up, festivals let us enjoy life, be proud of our {#blank#}10{#/blank#} and forget our work for a little while.
