Stories and Art of Chinese Fans

    You may think you cannot live through summer without air conditioners. But in ancient China, hand fans were almost the only ones to help people keep cool.

    Chinese people started to use hand fans over 2,000 years ago. The fans came in different shapes, such as round and square. They were also made from a11 kinds of materials. Palm leaf fans were cheap and easy to make. Feather fans(羽毛扇) showed the owner's high status. Sandalwood(檀香)fans could send out a sweet smell.

    Later, hand fans became far more than just something that could cool you down. They developed into art works, in which tuanshan (round fans)and zheshan(folded fans)were the most common.

    In the shape of a full moon, tuanshan was usually made of silk. They had beautiful birds and flowers on them. Women especially those in the imperial palace(皇宫),liked to use them. Meanwhile, men, especially the literati(文人), used zheshan. The literati liked them because zheshan were usually made of paper and they could paint and write poems on them. It was a way for them to show off their ability in literature, painting and handwriting. Almost anything can be painted on zheshan.

    Today, Chinese people still use these fans, only not many people write or paint on them any more. Next time when you are waving a fan, you may think of the stories behind it.

Last week we asked students at Guanghua High School about the best ways to learn more English. {#blank#}1{#/blank#}Some students had more specific suggestions. Bruce Li, for example, said the best way to learn new words was reading English magazines. {#blank#}2{#/blank#}When we asked about studying grammar, he said, “I never study grammar.{#blank#}3{#/blank#}

    Wei Ming feels differently. He has been learning English for six years and loves it a lot.{#blank#}4{#/blank#} He also thinks that watching English movies isn't a bad way because he can watch the actors say the words.

    Liu Chang said that joining the English Club at school was the best way to improve her English .{#blank#}5{#/blank#}And they also have fun.

    Flying a hot air balloon is full of challenge. Do you want to fly it? If so, here is some advice for you.

    Understanding the basics

    Take a training course and get a license.

    Know how the balloon can fly. Add propane(丙烷)to the fire to make the balloon fly.

    Make sure you have enough energy in the tank(箱).Check your tank at times.

    Learn how to stay at a right height. Raise or lower to control directions by the wind. If you want to lower, you can pull a red rope to let the hot air out of the top of the balloon.

    Making preparations

    You must have the necessary equipment(设备)such as a fire distinguisher(灭火器), a map and so on.

    You should check the wind conditions to make sure it's safe to fly. You must know when to fly or cancel the flight.

    You need several friends to help you control the balloon. They can help you pull down the basket or tie the balloon to the ground car until you are ready to fly.

    Flying the balloon

    Write down the height and the route(路线)through the whole flight. Before you land，pay attention to the high mountains, trees，tall buildings and so on. They may be dangerous.

    You are never too careful. Keep calm when you have trouble.

    People drink tea. There are many kinds of tea, such as black tea, green tea, white tea and yellow tea. People drink a lot of tea in China. Some people drink it because they think it makes them healthy. Many people drink it because it tastes(尝起来) very good. It is delicious.

    People drink a lot of tea in Japan. People drink a lot of tea in South Korea too. In Vietnam, people like to drink coffee first. Then they drink tea. In England, people like to drink tea with milk.

    Many people drink black tea in the US. In the South, people like to drink sweet tea. Sweet tea is cold black tea with sugar in it.

    Most tea comes from China. Some tea comes from India or Sri Lanka.  Kenya, Japan and Indonesia also grow tea.

    Drinking tea around the world

    People burn coal, gas and oil to get energy But there are problems with these fuels (燃料). (A)________, these fuels cause pollution. Pollution makes the air and water unsafe for humans. Secondly, these fuels will not last forever. One day, we will run out of these fuels.

    Scientists are looking for new kinds of energy. One is heat from the Earth. We know that (B)地球中央非常热. We cannot reach the center of the Earth, but in some places the heat from the Earth's center comes to the surface of the Earth. Perhaps you know about some of these places One place is volcanoes (火山). It is very dangerous to go near an active volcano, (C) _______ we cannot use the energy from this.

    Another kind of heat from the Earth is hot springs (温泉). In these places, hot water comes to the surface of the Earth. If this water is near a town, the hot water can be sent in pipes (管道) directly to people's houses to heat them .In Iceland, this is a common way to heat houses.

    (D)In Australia, scientists are looking for ways to make energy using hot rocks under the surface of the Earth. They want to pump (抽水)water onto the hot rocks .When the water hits the rocks, it makes stream(蒸汽). The steam is piped to power stations where (E) it is used to make electricity. The electricity can then be sent all over the country.
