The first living creatures to travel in space were the dogs of the Soviet Unions space program.Beginning in 1951 dogs flew aboard sub－orbital flights to the height of 63 miles and higher.They helped to test the equipment that would later be used by humans.The first pair of dogs to fly，on July 22，1951，were named Tsygan and Dezik.

     Space dogs would make history on November 3，1957.On this date，just one month after the historic launch of the world's first artificial satellite，Sputnik，the Soviet Union shocked the world again by launching Sputnik 2.This satellite contained the first living creature to travel in space，a dog named Laika.Laika was to have orbited for a week or more until her food and oxygen ran out.In fact，Laika lasted only hours in orbit before over heating in her capsule(太空舱) took her life.

     That next step，occurred in August 1960，when the dogs Belka and Strelka made 18 orbits of earth and returned alive.Like Laika before them，they became distinguished ， featured in newspapers and magazines around the world.

     Six more orbital dog flights over the next eight months further tested the equipment necessary for humans to follow in the dogs' footsteps.That historic event happened on April 12，1961，when Yuri Gagarin became the first human to travel in space.

     The role of the space dogs had proven important in advancing the exploration of space.But，they would make one final flight.In 1966，traveling aboard the Cosmos 110 satellite，the dogs Ugolek and Veterok spent 22 days in orbit.Once again dogs led the way.Humans would not achieve a space flight that long for eight more years，in Skylab 2.

    Each passenger needs a farecard(车票) to enter and go out.Up to two children under age five may travel free with a paying customer.

    Farecard machines are in every station.Bring small bills because there are no change machines in the stations and farecard machines only provide up to $5 in change.

    Get one day of unlimited Metrorail rides with a One Day Pass. Buy it from a farecard machine in Metro stations. Use it after 9：30 a.m. until closing on weekdays, and all day on weekends and holidays.

    Open：5 a.m. Monday-Friday, 7 a.m.Saturday-Sunday.

    Close：midnight Sunday-Thursday, 3 a.m. Friday-Saturday.

    It is Saturday afternoon. You and your friends are planning to go to the movies and then spend the night together. Just as you start to get ready, your dad reminds you it is your aunt's birthday and the whole family is going out to dinner to celebrate. How can this possibly end without a huge argument?

    One of the greatest sources of tension (紧张) between teenagers and their families is the struggle to balance personal desires with family expectations. As you are getting older, you are becoming more independent and more interested in being with your friends. However, at the same time, your family is trying to figure out(弄清楚) how to deal with these changes. While you once spent most of your free time with your family, you are now often absent from home. Parents may get their feelings hurt. Or they might feel that they are losing control of their family during this period. You might feel angry that so many family demands are placed on you.

    There are a few things you can try to make it a little easier to ease the tension.

    Make your plans ahead of time. Ask your parents if there is anything else planned at that time.

    When something with your friends interferes (冲突) with a family event, try to figure out if there is any way you can do both.

    Suggest something you would really like to do with your family. Sometimes parents feel better just knowing their teenager wants to spend time with them.

    Some of the time you won't be happy with the outcome. You might either have to disappoint your parents or have to miss out being with your friends. However, if you show consideration for the feelings of both your family and your friends, you can solve the problem in a tender（和善的）way.

    There was a time in the 1960's and 1970's when some people believed that coffee would replace tea as Britain's favourite drink, but that did not happen, and today, tea remains Britain's favourite drink.

    To say that the British are fond of tea is something of an understatement. From the Royal(皇室的) Family down to the homeless and the out-of-work, tea is more than just a pleasure. It is an important part of life!

    The popularity of tea in the United Kingdom has a long history. It was in 1657 that Thomas Garway, the owner of a coffee house, sold the first tea in London. The drink soon became popular as another choice besides coffee.

    In those days, however, tea was not something for anyone. For a century and a half, it remained an expensive drink. Many bosses served a cup of it to their workers in the middle of the morning, thus inventing a lasting British tradition, the “tea break”. But as a social drink outside the workplace, tea was served for the nobility(贵族) and for the growing middle classes. Among those who had the money for tea, it became very popular as a drink to be enjoyed in cafés and “tea gardens”.

    It was the 7th Duchess of Bedford who, in around 1800, started the popular “afternoon tea”, which took place at about four o'clock. At about the same time, the Earl of Sandwich popularized a new way of eating bread with something (e. g. jam) between them, and before long, a small meal at the end of the afternoon with tea and sandwiches had become part of a way of life.

    As tea became much cheaper during the nineteenth century, its popularity spread right through British society. In working-class households, it was served with the main meal of the day, eaten when workers returned home after a day's labour. This meal has become known as “high tea”.

    Today, tea can be drunk at any time of day. Most people in Britain drink tea for breakfast. The mid-morning “tea break” is an institution in British offices and factories. Later in the day, “afternoon tea” is still a way of life in the south of England and among the middle classes, while “high tea” has remained a tradition in the north of Britain.

Mary Shelley

English author Mary Shelley was just 18 years old when she wrote Frankenstein, which many credit as the origin of science fiction. Thus, Shelley has been called "the teenage girl who invented science fiction."

Alexandra Scott

Alexandra Scott was diagnosed with a form of cancer shortly before her first birthday. When she was just 4 years old, she set up her first lemonade stand in her front yard to raise money for childhood cancer research. Inspired by her story, people around the world set up their own lemonade stands to raise money for her cause. By the time she died in 2004, she had raised SI million. Her family continues her legacy (遗志) through Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation.

Yuanyuan Tan

Chinese ballet dancer Yuanyuan Tan started representing her country in international competitions as a young teen. At 17, she became the youngest ever principal dancer at the San Francisco Ballet, as well as the first Chinese dancer to earn that title in a major Western company. She gives talks around the world, inspiring young dancers to follow their artistic dreams.

Bindi Irwin

Bindi Irwin carried on her father Steve Irwin's conservation legacy following his death in 2006. When she was 8 years old, she launched "Bindi the Jungle Girl" to encourage more kids to get interested in animals and wildlife conservation. She has continued to make TV appearances, published books and furthered her father's causes.
