What does it mean to be intelligent?

It seems that everyone goes to college now, whether or not they find themselves interested in studying something long term. Even though I know there are different ways to be intelligent, I struggle due to society's influence, which maintains that intelligence is quantifiable (可量化的) and that academic intelligence is one and the only.

Where do IQ tests come into play when one considers intelligence? Do they fall closest to priority when considering this unquantifiable concept? Intelligence simply cannot be reduced to an IQ test, which are not effective. While designed to measure "intelligence," all they measure are biological developments that can change as one grows.

There are many factors that can indicate an intelligent being, such as academic intelligence, emotional intelligence, and worldly intelligence. For instance, if a student realizes that they haven't studied appropriately for an exam, he or she would have the ability to acknowledge that, and then make revisions to his or her study habits accordingly.  Emotional intelligence is the intelligence that fosters self-awareness, self-reflection, and self-improvement.

 We cannot function without forming relationships and communication. This proves that being aware of oneself and reflecting in order to further better communication skills is an evidence to intelligence. Where would you be if you were a terrible communicator, unaware, and unwilling to improve, but academically thriving?

Emotional intelligence is what surpasses (超越) those who are hard-headed. Those who maintain academic intelligence may still be a bit dull and unaware of themselves.Even as a college student, there are certain skills such as teamwork and communication that require awareness and an open mind in order to further their growth.

Academia is not only pictured and taught unfairly, or even close to what intelligence is if you were to quantify it. If you want to strive for mental growth, and maintain self-awareness through self-reflection, you can apply that to any intelligence category.

A. All of life is communicatory.

B. Specifically, this is emotional intelligence.

C. Intelligence is determined by many factors.

D. Stubbornness is a barrier towards communication.

E. In fact, there are many with low IQ scores that are intelligent.

F. Some connections exist between intelligence and communication.

G. So there is academic intelligence, emotional intelligence, and worldly intelligence.

        The Internet has opened up a whole new online world for us to meet, chat and go where we've never been before. But just as inface-to-face communication, there are some rules of behavior that should be followed when on line. {#blank#}1{#/blank#}Imagine how you'd feel if you were in the other person's shoes.

        For anything you're about to send: ask yourself,“Would I say this to the person's face?”If the answer is no, rewrite and reread{#blank#}2{#/blank#}If someone in the chat room is rude to you, your instinct(本能) is to fireback in the same manner. But try not to do so. {#blank#}3{#/blank#}If it was caused by a disagreement with another member, try to fix thesituation by politely discussing it. Remember torespect the beliefs and opinions of others in the chat room.

{#blank#}4{#/blank#}Offer advice when asked by newcomers, as they maynot be sure what to do or how to communicate. When someonemakes a mistake, whether it's astupid question or an unnecessarily long answer, be kind aboutit. If it's a small mistake, you may not need to say anything. Even if youfeel strongly about it, think twicebefore saying anything. Having goodmariners yourself doesn't give you license to correct everyone else. {#blank#}5{#/blank#}At the sametime, if you find you are wrong. be sure tocorrect yourself and apologize to those that you have offended.

    Etiquette, or good manners, used to be the glue that held society together. {#blank#}1{#/blank#} Sadly, these days it has mostly gone by the wayside. This list is several best rules of etiquette that have now disappeared.

    Opening the Door

    In days gone by, a gentleman would always open doors for ladies. {#blank#}2{#/blank#} This has now almost entirely disappeared and it is not entirely the fault of the men. I have seen women laugh at men for opening a door for them. They seem to be confusing manners with chauvinism(大男子主义).

    Writing Thank-You Notes

    In days gone by, whenever a person received a gift, they would write a thank-you note as soon as possible. {#blank#}3{#/blank#} Parents would sit children down after a birthday or Christmas and coach them in their first thank-you note. It is a shame that gift giving has now become a virtual obligation and the idea of a thank-you note would be laughed at.

    {#blank#}4{#/blank#}

    We seem to have completely lost the concept of correct timing when it comes to parties these days. {#blank#}5{#/blank#} After all, a party normally has a guest of honor-this is usually the oldest woman present. It was considered extremely rude in the past to leave a party before the guest of honor-and once the guest of honor left, it was a signal to all that they should begin their own preparations to leave.

A. Arriving on Time.

B. Leaving at the Right Time.

C. People leave with various excuses.

D. It enabled people to get on well with each other.

E. This rule was true even if the giver was a relative.

F. It could be the lady they were driving, or a stranger.

G. We've thrown away the concept of a guest of honor at will.

    If you want to learn English well, enlarging your vocabulary is important. Here are some helpful ways to help you to have a larger vocabulary.

    {#blank#}1{#/blank#}A good dictionary should be up-to-date and easy to understand. Make sure the definitions (定义) are written in clear English. I strongly recommend Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English as there is good coverage of spoken and written English, British and American English, as well as clear example sentences.

    Make notes of new words. But before you write them down on you notebook, you should look them up in the dictionary and make sure you are aware of any grammatical information.{#blank#}2{#/blank#}When you write down the new word in your notebook, try to include an example sentence in English.

    Organize your notes into themes. Some people find it very helpful to do so. {#blank#}3{#/blank#}For example, you can have one page containing words which have something to do with houses, while another page containing words relating to jobs, and so on.

    {#blank#}4{#/blank#}The next time you have spare time, skip through your notebook. Choose a page where you have already stored a number of words and expressions, cover the page and try to remember what you wrote. Then look at the page and see how many words you have remembered.

    When you find a new word, check to see if you can use it in other ways. English is a flexible language—nouns, verbs and adjectives often share the same root. {#blank#}5{#/blank#}

A. Review the words in your notebook.

B. Have good English dictionaries.

C. Read books that contain some new words.

D. Look up new words and phrases in your dictionary.

E. For example, love, lovely, beloved and loveless all share one root.

F. For example, if you are looking up a verb, check to see if it can be used in a passive form.

G. So rather than have a list of words without any obvious connection, you can divide your notes into themes.

    If something that you're doing doesn't challenge you, then it doesn't change you. We all need some normal stress in our lives, after all. {#blank#}1{#/blank#} So challenge the following limits:

    Figure out what you're scared of and do it continuously.

    If you're a salesman, and you're scared of talking to people personally or over the phone, now, instead of being scared and thinking you'll fail, spend at least five minutes a day to pick up the phone and make a call. {#blank#}2{#/blank#} But don't stop on the first try! Eventually, you can look at fear in the eyes and say, "Go on, I'm not scared!"

    {#blank#}3{#/blank#}

    Make sure this hobby is not linked to your career; you have to relax and relieve your stress while performing this. Some examples might be cooking, sewing, painting and so on. Apart from helping you challenge yourself, taking a class for your hobby may also give you extra income.

    Set aside at least nine minutes a day for physical exercise.

    {#blank#}4{#/blank#}  A simple 9-minute run around your neighborhood can do wonders for yourself. Exercise can not only help you maintain your regular weight, but also make you feel better about yourself.

    Travel and allow yourself to be interested in new people.

Don't just limit yourself to your fellow travelers — try to connect with the service staff. You never know what kind of people they're going to be. Get out of your house or go online right now to book your class. {#blank#}5{#/blank#}

A. You can never see any improvement if you stick to your comfort zone.

B. Take a class for a hobby you've been wanting to develop.

C. Start to travel now and then to challenge yourself.

D. Running in the gym may be a better choice.

E. You don't need to go to the gym.

F. Someone may hang up on you.

G. You should do it continuously.

    We all have plans to achieve success in life, but what we are lacking is the motivation that keeps us going to put plans into action. Here are the ways that can effectively ease the problem.
    {#blank#}1{#/blank#}

    Just grab a book, especially an inspirational book or a book of success stories. You can learn from others and the story will motivate you to move ahead with your plans. It also makes you re-focus your energy on your goals rather than the problems at hand.

    Think of your purpose.

    {#blank#}2{#/blank#} Your purpose could be to improve the life of others, or help people to do things more efficiently. Thinking of your purpose is an important way to motivate you.

    Talk to a supportive friend.

    Talking to a supportive friend would be able to overcome the problem of lacking motivation. Find someone that you are comfortable with and share your problems with him. {#blank#}3{#/blank#}

    Go through your goals daily.

    Prepare a list of goals that you want to achieve and go through your goals at least once a day. {#blank#}4{#/blank#} By doing this, you refresh your mind with the goals you have set for yourself.

    Do it at once.

    Another way is to get started with what you need to do. {#blank#}5{#/blank#} But by forcing yourself to just do it, you'll probably make progress little by little and without realizing it, you have actually finished the task on hand.

A. Read a book.

B.  See a motivational film.

C. You should have plans to achieve success.

D. After it, you will feel recharged and re-energized.

E. Think of why you want to achieve what you want.

F. Sometimes you don't feel like doing what you want to do.

G. You need to do this even more if you feel down and have no motivation.
