Things to Consider When Choosing a Major

Majors are important in college because it's what determines not only what degree you will graduate with, but what career you will be most qualified for once you've graduated. While it might not be something you want to think about right now, it is something you're going to decide on eventually.

The biggest thing to remember when choosing a major is to stick with a subject that interests you. This is for your career, and you're much more likely to be happy if you choose a field that's in line with what you would like to pursue as a dream job.

It is undeniable(不可否认的) that some careers just make more money than others. That means that some majors are more valuable than others, and as college is supposed to be an investment, thinking about your dream salary is of great importance.

So don't choose career that will bring you a great salary but that leaves you feeling depressed and unhappy.

If you're one of those lucky students who know what you'd like your major to be before applying for college, we suggest that you research your top choices first. Which ones are best known? Do these programs have a good reputation for helping students find employment in your field after graduation? Which schools offer world-class professors? These are important questions, because unfortunately, not all majors are created equally.

Don't Panic.

If you've gone through all these tips and you still don't know what you'd like to major in, don't panic. It's normal to go to college not having a clear idea of what you'd like to do as a career; it's also normal to think you know what you want to do as a profession only to change your mind halfway through your time in college. Remember that college is about finding what truly motivates you, so don't panic if it doesn't show up right away.

A. Be confident with yourself.

B. You have time.

C. How much money do you want to make?

D. Talk to professionals in the field.

E. However, remember that your happiness is very important.

F. What schools are best for your interests?

G. What excites you?

    There is an old Spanish Proverb which states, “Tomorrow is often the busiest day of the week”. {#blank#}1{#/blank#} I'd say, too many. Our dreams should not, and cannot wait. We have to go for them now! Here's why.

    1){#blank#}2{#/blank#}

    Nobody likes to talk about death, but the reality is – everybody is going to die at one point. None of us know the day, or the hour. Therefore, today is all we have. Don't go to your grave with unfulfilled dreams. Make the decision to go after every dream, big or small right now.

    2)The world is waiting on your gift

    I know this may be hard to believe, but the world is waiting on YOU! Yes, YOU! {#blank#}3{#/blank#} Sure, other people may be able to sing. But they'll never be able to sing exactly like you. Sure other people can write, but they'll never be able to write from the same perspective in which you write. Don't deprive(使丧失) the world of your gift. It's the oxygen that we need to survive. Thus, it is your responsibility to figure out exactly what your gift is, and use to better your life and the lives of those around you.

    3){#blank#}4{#/blank#}

    You can dream about writing the great American play that you want, but it's never going to happen unless you actually put pen to paper. You can dream about finding a cure for cancer, but it will never happen unless you actually go to school to become equipped with the necessary tools to find that cure. {#blank#}5{#/blank#} They require you to get your head out of the clouds, and actually do the work to make them happen. Get to it!

D. Possibilities you never knew existed are waiting on you

E. How many times have we put off our dreams until tomorrow?

F. Unless you take the first step, your dreams will never come true.

    The UN has recognized the contributions of volunteers on Dec. 5, International Volunteer Day. Here, the four things are offered to consider before taking the leap into overseas volunteering.

    Choose your organization carefully

    {#blank#}1{#/blank#} volunteering may be a fundraising mechanism(筹资机制)for a development project. For others, volunteering is fundamental to their programs, and those serving take on professional roles in longer-term development.

    {#blank#}2{#/blank#}

    Volunteers want to help and make a difference, but most know this isn't a purely selfless act. You will learn new skills, broaden your horizons and come to better understand yourself and the world.{#blank#}3{#/blank#} Reflect on your motivations. You want to help reduce global poverty or protect the natural world, but what else? Have you always wanted to travel, but not as a tourist? Work with kids? When you understand your motivations, you'll be in a better position to choose the option that is right for you.

    Work alongside the local community

    Often times, travelers volunteer in isolation(隔离)from the local community in which they are working in.{#blank#}4{#/blank#} This enables you to ensure you are committing to a project that promotes long term and sustainable change.

    A volunteer trip is just the beginning

    {#blank#}5{#/blank#}Further ignite(点燃)the global change maker in you by taking your experience one step further when you return home. Spread the message of your transformative experience to others, helping to spark the change within them.

A. And that's all OK.

B. Know why you're going.

C. Don't assume you know it all.

D. Communities always welcome volunteers.

E. Volunteer travel is a life-changing experience.

F. Some organizations require you to pay your own way, and often include a fee.

G. Make sure to travel with organizations that have strong partnerships with local communities.

How the Elderly Are Treated Around the World

    How cultures view and treat their elderly is closely linked to their most prized values and qualities. {#blank#}1{#/blank#}

    In the US and UK, Protestantism (新教) is at play. Western cultures tend to be youth-centric, stressing qualities like independence. {#blank#}2{#/blank#} It ties a person's value to his or her ability to work – something that becomes weaker in old age. As their health becomes worse, the elderly in these cultures often move to old people's homes and nursing homes.

    In France, parents are protected by law. It is difficult to imagine an Elderly Rights Law being a focus in the laws of many Western cultures. France did, however, pass a similar law in 2004. {#blank#}3{#/blank#} One was a group of official statistics showing France had the highest rate of pensioner suicides in Europe, and the other was the aftermath of a heat wave that killed 15,000 people, most of whom were elderly and had been dead for weeks before they were found.

    {#blank#}4{#/blank#} Native American cultures traditionally accept death as a fact of life. In many Native American areas, elders are respected for their wisdom and life experiences. Within Native American families, it's common for the elders to be expected to pass down their learning to younger members of the family.

    The way to care for Chinese elders is changing. Chinese families traditionally view respect for one's elders as the highest virtue, according to the Confucian tradition. Adult children are generally expected to care for their parents in their old age. {#blank#}5{#/blank#} Nursing homes are beginning to become a more socially acceptable option for elderly care.

A. However, this tradition is beginning to break down due to rising lifetime and an aging population.

B. In the African-American area, death is seen as an opportunity to celebrate life.

C. Here's what we can learn from other cultures about treating the elderly.

D. But China faces the unique problem of tending to an increasingly elderly population.

E. Native American elders pass down their knowledge.

F. It was only passed following two disturbing events, though.

G. This relates back to the Protestant work rules.

Learn to Manage Your Time in College

    A common view both among and of college students is that they are always short on money. While this may be true, many college students are also always running short on something else: time. {#blank#}1{#/blank#} Here are a few things to consider:

    Manage your academic time.{#blank#}2{#/blank#}Consequently, your academic work should always come first when it comes to arranging your time in order of importance. When looking at your schedule for the week, figure out what your academic commitments look like. What time do you have classes? How much homework do you have to do? What assignments are due? When do you have major exams or quizzes?

    Manage your personal time. It's an unrealistic expectation to think that you can study, go to class, and work all day, every day.{#blank#}3{#/blank#}Make sure to allow yourself time to go to something fun in the yard, attend a meeting for your favorite club, and just hang out for an hour or so at night with friends over dinner. Doing things that make your personal time more enjoyable and not totally focused on school? can actually improve your productivity when working on projects later.

    Keep your health in mind. When people's schedules are tight, one of the first things to go is sleep. While it may be common among college students, a lack of sleep is more hurtful than you might think. It can throw everything into disorder: your mental health, your physical health, your stress level, and, of course, your schedule. {#blank#}4{#/blank#}

    Use your technology. Nothing helps a college student stay organized more than a good calendar! Some students use the calendars on their phones; others use things like Google Calendar; others still use the classic paper-calendar model.{#blank#}5{#/blank#}Just change and try again.

A. Try your best to keep a routine on a regular basis.

B. Remember that your brain needs to have a break, too.

C. If what you're using isn't working for you, don't give up.

D. How can you balance your time when there never seems to be enough of it?

E. It's important to remember why you're in college in the first place: to graduate.

F. Making a list and then crossing items off as they are completed can be satisfying.

G. Take moments to plan out the time for a week: your homework, social time and sleep.

    It could happen anywhere at any time.{#blank#}1{#/blank#} Most people, at one time or another, have been on the receiving end of a random act of kindness. In a sometimes cold world where people can be so focused on what they're doing, a random act of kindness can make all the difference.

    They can be relatively insignificant. Hannah Bailey from London, for example, told the Metro newspaper about how she was given her fruit and vegetable shopping for free. The seller did her a kindness when it emerged she didn't have any change to pay.{#blank#}2{#/blank#}

    The city of Naples has long had a tradition called' caffè sospeso'. When buying coffee, a person who has recently been lucky would purchase two cups but only drink one, leaving the second one anonymously(匿名), out of the goodness of their heart, for a poor person to claim for free.{#blank#}3{#/blank#}

    However, in some cases, these little acts can be a matter of life and death. Take, for example, the unnamed commuter, who in June 2018 fell off a station platform onto an electric railway track in Toronto, Canada. A quick-thinking, hut even now unknown, bystander selflessly leapt down to pull him to safety.

    So, why do it? {#blank#}4{#/blank#} The people never meet again. According to UK charity The Mental Health Foundation, acts like these can “give our lives new purpose, show us other perspectives on our own problems and even make us feel content.”

    {#blank#}5{#/blank#} Hold open a door for someone, deliver a compliment—even give up your seat on a bus. Help someone who is in need. It takes all kinds. It needn't be anything huge. One day, whether you need it or not, someone might help you in your hour of need.

A. So give it a try.

B. Be brave to face challenges.

C. Often, the acts aren't paid back.

D. She was happy about it all day.

E. She was in low spirits the whole day.

F. This tradition is now more common worldwide.

G. It's often unexpected, but almost never unappreciated.

    Including children in the farming lifestyle has many benefits. Sure, it is nice to have the additional help with chores(家庭杂务), but it also fosters so much growth, sending our kids down a good path towards who they will someday become. It is possible that our children will grow up to lead lives that do not include farming. {#blank#}1{#/blank#}

    Through caring for farm animals, kids learn that in life others often come before self.

    {#blank#}2{#/blank#} It doesn't matter if we don't feel like it or if we are sick and tired. What matters is that we take care of the animals that take care of us and do so in a timely manner.

    {#blank#}3{#/blank#} If the work on a farm does not get done, the operation fails. It takes discipline and commitment to get down to business every day, and seeing this in action will give kids a good work attitude. They will know and understand that nothing good comes easy and that they have to work to survive. {#blank#}4{#/blank#} Functioning as part of a productive team will surely be playing a crucial role sooner or later in all walks of life.

    Additionally, fanning teaches patience. {#blank#}5{#/blank#}Cattle will be difficult to control. Horses will run away when you try to catch them. Goats will kick over that bucket of hard-earned milk. A rooster will decide you got too close to his hens and give you a run for your money. In spite of all that, kids will learn to be patient and take things easy.

    There may not be any instant reward, but in the long-term kids will see the benefit of all their efforts during those hard days.

A. At the same time, they learn to work with others.

B. Farm life also teaches kids the value of hard work.

C. Children learn to be grateful for animals for eating purpose.

D. Teamwork is no longer an important skill to develop and use.

E. There are going to be a lot of days when things do not go your way.

F. However, what they learn on a farm can also be instrumental in their future lives.

G. Animals need to be fed, watered, and cared for before we get to sit down and relax.
