【阅读gb】北师大版(2019)高中英语 必修第三册Unit 7 Lesson 1
People use money to buy food, furniture, books, bicycles and hundreds of other things they need or want. When they work, they usually get paid in money.
Most of the money today is made of metal or paper. One of the first kinds of money was shells.
Shells were not the only things used as money. In China, cloth and knives were used. In the Philippine Islands, rice was used as money for a long time. Elephant tusks, monkey tails and salt were used as money in parts of Africa.
The first metal coins were made in China. They were round and had a square hole in the centre.
Different countries have used different metals and designs for their money. Sweden and Russia used copper to make their money. Later some countries began to make coins of gold and silver.
But even gold and silver were inconvenient if you had to buy something expensive. Again the Chinese thought of a way to improve money. The first paper money looked more like a note from one person to another than the paper money used today.
Money has had an interesting history from the days of shell money until today.

Smarter Studying
How did you learn how to ride your bike? Someone probably gave you a few lessons and then you practiced a lot. {#blank#}1{#/blank#} No one is born knowing how to study. You need to learn a few study skills and then practice them.
Pay attention: Good studying starts in class
When you pay attention in class, you are starting the process of learning and studying. Do you have trouble paying attention in class? Are you sitting next to a loud person? Is it hard to see the board? {#blank#}2{#/blank#}
Good notes = Easier studying
{#blank#}3{#/blank#} Try your best to use good handwriting so you can read your notes later. It's also a good idea to keep your notes and papers organized by subject.
{#blank#}4{#/blank#}
Waiting until Thursday night to study for Friday's test will make a night no fun! It also makes it hard to do your best. We're all guilty (内疚的) about putting things off sometimes. One of the best ways to make sure that doesn't happen is to make a schedule of what to do.
Sleep tight (充分地)
So the test is tomorrow and you've followed your study plan, but suddenly you can't remember anything! Don't panic (恐慌). {#blank#}5{#/blank#} Try to get a good night's sleep and you'll be surprised by what comes back to you in the morning
A. Children may get upset when they are hungry. B. Tell your children how much fun it is to fly before the trip. C. Most kids have a stuffed animal or a blanket that they love. D. If a child brings them up, tell him that flying is perfectly safe. E. Leave a little extra time so you can make your children walk. F. Bring a favorite book and a new book your kids have never read. G. Your phone is another favorite tool for keeping them happy on a flight. |
There are some children who love to fly and then there are the kids who are afraid of the unknown. The following tips may help you if you want to travel with your children by plane.
●{#blank#}1{#/blank#} If you tell the child he will soon be flying on an airplane and leave it at that, his imagination can turn to fear. Instead, tell him how wonderful it is to fly.
●Don't tell children about the dangers of flying. {#blank#}2{#/blank#} And you can promise him that the plane will not crash.
●Read a book to your children. {#blank#}3{#/blank#} Reading may also make your children fall asleep.
●Bring a comfort thing that your child enjoys. {#blank#}4{#/blank#} Be sure to bring that blanket along as it will provide a safety net for the child. Having this blanket along may also help him fall asleep. Bring a safe electronic device that shows movies or supports video games, and offers children puzzles.
●Bring snacks. Children are picky eaters and may not like the food being offered. Three to five hours can be a long time on an airplane without food. {#blank#}5{#/blank#} When they are upset, it is easier to let fear of the unknown take control.
