When we plant a rose seed in the earth,we notice it is small,but we do not criticize it as "rootlees and stemless".We treat it as a seed, {#blank#}1{#/blank#} （give）it the water and nourishment required {#blank#}2{#/blank#} a seed.

    When it first {#blank#}3{#/blank#} （shoot up）out of the earth, we don't condemn（指责）it as {#blank#}4{#/blank#} （mature） and underdeveloped, {#blank#}5{#/blank#} do we criticize the buds for not being open when they appear. We stand in wonder at the process {#blank#}6{#/blank#} （take） place, and give the plant the care it needs at each stage of its development.

    The rose is a rose from the time it is a seed to the time it dies.Within it,at all times,it contains its whole potential. It seems to be {#blank#}7{#/blank#} （constant） in the process of change: Yet at each state， at each moment, it is perfectly all right as {#blank#}8{#/blank#} it is.

A flower is not {#blank#}9{#/blank#} （good）when it blooms than when it is merely a bud; at each stage it is {#blank#}10{#/blank#} same thing—a flower in the process of expressing its potential.

    John Snow was a famous doctor in London — so expert that he attended Queen Victoria as her personal physician. But he became inspired when he thought about helping ordinary people {#blank#}1{#/blank#} (expose) to cholera,{#blank#}2{#/blank#}  was the deadly disease of its day. Neither its cause nor its cure was understood. So many thousands of terrified people died whenever there was {#blank#}3{#/blank#}outbreak. John Snow wanted to face the challenge and solve this problem. He knew that cholera would never {#blank#}4{#/blank#}(control) until its cause was found.

    He became interested in two theories that {#blank#}5{#/blank#}(possible) explained how cholera killed people. The first suggested that cholera multiplied in the air. A cloud of dangerous gas floated around until it found its victims. The second suggested that people absorbed this disease {#blank#}6{#/blank#} their bodies with their meals. From the stomach the disease quickly attacked the body and soon the {#blank#}7{#/blank#}(affect) people died. He suspected the second theory was correct {#blank#}8{#/blank#} he needed evidence.

    So when another outbreak hit London in 1854, he was ready to begin his {#blank#}9{#/blank#}(enquire). As the disease spread quickly through poor neighborhoods, he began to gather information. In two particular streets, the cholera outbreak was so severe that more than 500 people died in ten days. He determined {#blank#}10{#/blank#}(find) out why.

    A rainforest is an area{#blank#}1{#/blank#}(cover) by tall trees with the total high rainfall spreading quite equally through the year. Rainforests have a great effect{#blank#}2{#/blank#}the world environment because they can take in heat from the sun and adjust the climate. Without the forest cover, these areas would reflect {#blank#}3{#/blank#}(much) heat into the atmosphere, warming the rest of the world. Losing the rainforests may also influence wind and rainfall patterns, potentially{#blank#}4{#/blank#}(cause) certain natural disasters all over the world.

    In the past hundred years,{#blank#}5{#/blank#} (human) have begun destroying rainforests in search of the three major resources: land for crops, wood for paper and other products, land for raising farm animals,{#blank#}6{#/blank#}affects the environment as a whole. For example, a lot of carbon dioxide in the air comes from burning the rainforests. People   {#blank#}7{#/blank#}(obvious) have a need for the resources from cutting trees {#blank#}8{#/blank#}we will suffer much more than we will benefit.

    Rainforests are often called the world's drug store. More than 25% of the medicines we use today come from plants in rainforests. However, fewer than 1% of rainforest plants have been examined for their{#blank#}9{#/blank#} (medicine) value. It is extremely likely that our best chance to cure diseases {#blank#}10{#/blank#}(lie)somewhere in the world's shrinking rainforests.

    Of the three major drinks of the world—tea, coffee and cocoa—tea is consumed by the {#blank#}1{#/blank#}(large) number of people.

    China is the homeland of tea. Human cultivation of tea plants dates back to two thousand years ago. Tea from China, along {#blank#}2{#/blank#} her silk and porcelain, began to be known to the world more than a thousand years ago and since then it {#blank#}3{#/blank#} (be) an important Chinese export.

    At present more than forty countries in the world grow tea with Asian countries，{#blank#}4{#/blank#} (produce) 90% of the world's total output. All tea trees in other countries have their origin directly or indirectly in China. The word for tea leaves or tea as {#blank#}5{#/blank#}  drink in many countries are derivatives(衍生物)from the Chinese character “cha”. The Russians call it “cha'i”, {#blank#}6{#/blank#} sounds like “chaye”(tea leaves) as it is pronounced in northern China, and the English word “tea” sounds similar to the pronunciation of {#blank#}7{#/blank#}(it) counterpart（对应物） in Xiamen. The Japanese character for tea is written {#blank#}8{#/blank#}(exact) the same as it is in Chinese, though {#blank#}9{#/blank#} (pronounce) with a slight difference. The habit of tea drinking spread to Japan in the 6th century, but it was not introduced to Europe and America till the 17th and 18th centuries. Now the number of tea {#blank#}10{#/blank#}  （drink） in the world is still on the increase.

    Reggie was a normal boy, but he had been born deaf. He was well known to everyone in town, and they were all very fond of him. Unfortunately, he always seemed to be treated {#blank#}1{#/blank#} (different) from everyone else.

    Reggie didn't like this very much. But the person {#blank#}2{#/blank#} disliked this most was his friend Michael. Michael decided that things had to change.     A 90-year-old has been awarded“Woman Of The Year”for {#blank#}1{#/blank#} （be）Britain's oldest full-time employee-still working 40 hours a week. Now Irene Astbury works from 9am to 5pm daily at the pet shop in Macclesfield， {#blank#}2{#/blank#} she opened with her late husband Les. Her years of hard work have {#blank#}3{#/blank#}（final）been acknowledged after a customer nominated（提名）her to be Cheshire's Woman Of The Year.

    Granddaughter Gayle Parks，31-who works alongside her in the family business-said it remained unknown as to who nominated Irene for the award. She said，"We don't have any idea who put grandma forward. When we got a call {#blank#}8{#/blank#} （say）she was short-listed，we thought it was {#blank#}9{#/blank#} joke. But then we got an official letter and we were blown away. We are so proud of her. It's {#blank#}10{#/blank#} (wonder）."
