Back in 2008, American photographer Rose-Lynn Fisher was going through a hard time in her life, so she often cried. One day, she didn't brush her tears(眼泪)away. She put one tear under a microscope (显微镜), wondering what her tear would look like.

She was amazed by what she saw. "It was really interesting, "she told the Telegraph. "It was almost as if I was looking down at a landscape from a plane. "It was such an amazing discovery!

So she started thinking about a question: would a tear of grief(悲伤)look any different than a tear of joy? What about a tear from cutting an onion?

She collected 100 samples(样本)of tears caused by different things and put them all under a microscope. She was surprised to find that their appearance was changed by what had made people cry.

She thinks that this might be because of the different hormones(荷尔蒙)in the tears. The hormones may change their molecular(分子的)structures.

Then she wanted to know if men's tears are different from women's tears. She was also surprised by what showed up in the photographs of microscopic tears.

It was not a controlled scientific study, so there were many factors that could influence the resulting images. However, what she found was already something impressive.

Why don't you save some of your own tears and see what they look like when you are sad, happy or chopping(切) onions?

(1)、Why did Fisher cry often in 2008?
A、Because she was having a hard time. B、Because she needed tears to do her research. C、Because she dropped a microscope. D、Because she was not good-looking.
(2)、Fisher was amazed by _______________.
A、difficulties in her life B、a tear under a microscope C、a beautiful landscape D、her trip on the plane
(3)、What does Paragraph4 talk about?
A、How many tears she had cried. B、What usually makes people cry. C、How she studied tears and what she found. D、Why she wanted to study chemistry.
(4)、After her research, she found that ______________.
A、all tars have the same size B、tears' appearances can be different C、tears contain (包含) different hormones D、men's tears are the same as women's

Do you and your friends ever talk about your dreams with each other? If you do, you might have noticed something interesting – some of your friends seldom remember their dreams, but some can always describe their dreams so clearly that it seems like they're describing things that really happened to them. What makes those people different?

The answer is simple. There are two different types of dreamers – low dream recallers(回忆者)and high dream recallers.

Low dream recallers usually remember their dreams only twice a month. But high dream recallers are able to remember them about five mornings a week. And a new study suggests that activity in a certain part of the brain could have something to do with it, reported The Huffington Post.

Perrine Ruby, a French researcher at the Lyon Neuroscience Research Center, studied 41 people (21 high dream recallers and 20 low dream recallers) and recorded their brain activity.

She found that a part of the brain called the temporo-parietal junction (颞顶联合区) was more active in high dream recallers than in low dream recallers – both when they were sleeping and awake.

This brain area collects and processes(编程)information from the outside world. This means that high dream recallers know more about what's happening around them. For example, when they are awake, they respond (对……有反应) more strongly to hearing their own names, and when they are sleeping, they are woken more easily by sounds and movements.

By closely studying people's brain activities, Ruby found that high dream recallers have twice as much “wakefulness time” during sleep as low dream recallers do. And it is during these short times of wakefulness that the brain remembers dreams.

“The sleeping brain is not able to remember new information,” Ruby told The Washington Post. “It needs to wake up to be able to do that.”

This is not hard to understand. Just try to think of your own sleeping experiences. If you are worried during the night, you are more likely to remember your dreams, but if you sleep well, you will remember little in the morning, and this is because “you never get a chance to remember”, Robert Stickgold, a Harvard Medical School researcher, told The Washington Post.

    Garbage(垃圾) Island

You can't see it from the air. It's almost impossible to see from a ship. But somewhere in the North Pacific is a huge island of garbage, just below the water surface.

What is the island made of?

The garbage island is not an island, but a collection of millions of plastic and other objects. The water movements of Pacific Ocean bring the objects together and cause them to go around in a big circle.

Charles Moore found it in 1997 and named it “the Great Pacific Garbage Patch” .

Where does all the plastic come from?

Much of the garbage comes from everyday objects, such as shopping bags and water bottles. Some of these objects finally reach the ocean. Garbage from the western coast of North America takes about six years to reach it. Objects from East Asia take about a year. Other garbage comes from ships passing through the area.

    Is the Garbage Patch dangerous?

The larger pieces of garbage are a problem for wildlife. For example, sea turtles(海龟)and seabirds often think the plastic is their food. They eat the plastic and die.

In addition, the plastic stops sunlight from reaching deeper water. Without sunlight, very small sea animals die. Then, there is less food for larger fish to eat.

What can we do to help stop it?

Cleaning up the island isn't easy. But we can make people realize the problem. One environmentalist(环保主义者), David de Rothschild, is sailing around the world in boat made of plastic bottles to teach people about the problem of garbage in the sea.

Another idea is that we can recycle the plastic garbage. Environmental engineer Cesar Harada is building a robot that collects pieces of plastic. Harada hopes to use his robot in the Pacific. Harada also has a website for reporting environmental problems. He says, “I hope everybody can become an environmental activist.”
