    We've all experienced peer pressure (同伴压力). It happens to everybody. However, people have different reactions. Confident people refuse to do things they don't want to do, but shy and anxious people often give in. It may be because they want to be liked. It may be because they worry that their friends will make fun of them, or perhaps they're just curious about trying something new.

    It's hard being the only one who says no and the question is: how do you do it? If you think that missing maths, or smoking, or going somewhere you know your parents wouldn't like is a bad idea then the answer is simple: don't do it. It's your decision, nobody else's. You don't need to be aggressive. You don't need to shout and scream, but you must be confident and you must be firm. You need to say, “No thanks. I don't want to do that.”

    Being on your own against everybody else is very hard, so it can really help to have at least one other peer, or friend, who will say no too. You want friends who will support you when you're in trouble. You don't want people who will always agree with the majority. Remember, the most popular people aren't always the most trustworthy.

— You can learn a lot from people your own age. They can teach you great football skills or the best way to do your maths homework. They can recommend music and advise you on fashion. And don't forget you can tell them things too, and that always feels great. So, find friends who have similar interests. And remember, friendship isn't about feeling depressed and guilty.

A. Choose your friends carefully.

B. Firstly, you must decide what you believe in.

C. It's about sharing experiences and having fun.

D. Of course, peer pressure isn't completely bad.

E. It may be because they were all born to be stubborn.

F. Depression and guilt will surely give you peer pressure.

G. Whatever the reason, some people end up doing things they really don't want to.

    Variety is the spice of language. The words listed in this book are not intended to replace those that most people use most of the time. Rather, they are variations on the theme. We tend to use the same old words over and over again, to limit our powers of expression by limiting our vocabulary. {#blank#}1{#/blank#} but why not enhance your speech and writing by learning to use new ones from time to time ds alternatives?

    How often have you spoken of having an accident? {#blank#}2{#/blank#} Or why not occasionally describe a situation as aggravated(恶化)instead of worsened.

    I don't mean that you should throw away the Mold words”. {#blank#}3{#/blank#} English is an especially rich language, and often there are differences between two words that are generally regarded as die same. Thus, a mishap is not merely an accident; it is an unfortunate accident. Because there can be fortunate accidents, like bumping into an old friend you haven't seen for years and whose address you've lost. {#blank#}4{#/blank#}.

    No doubt a good many words in the list will be familiar to you, but do you use them, or do they remain the “property” of others? {#blank#}5{#/blank#}Try to make these words your own, as companions or friendly rivals of the ones you have owned in the past. Let them compete, and make your language all the richer.

A. Just vary them with the “new words”.

B. Many words have more than one meaning.

C. There is nothing wrong with the “old words”.

D. English words are grouped according to their origins.

E. Why not use the alternative mishap once in a while?

F. They are included to introduce variety into your speech and writing.

G. So in using mishap instead of accident, you must be sure of the difference.

    Changing your life can come in small, easy steps. You can transform yourself and live a better life by making positive changes along the way. Here are some choices that will lead to your transformation.

    Choose to change bad habits

    Some bad habits seem to stick around without us even realizing it. {#blank#}1{#/blank#}You can overcome them, find better alternatives, and get through your struggle to become a better you! Do it for yourself more than anything.

    Choose to grow

    It's easy to get stuck in a fixed way of life. {#blank#}2{#/blank#} In choosing to grow, you build character, develop your strengths, become aware of what needs improvement, and turn into the well-rounded person you need to be to succeed.

    Choose to seek a balanced life

    Where do you need balance? Are you all work, no play? Or the opposite? {#blank#}3{#/blank#} If you're spending too much time working or locked away alone, find the time for social interaction and having fun. If you haven't committed to a schedule in a while, make the decision to start following one.

    {#blank#}4{#/blank#}

    This is vital to human existence. We need the loving bonds created by family members and friends. Personal relationships are key to emotional growth and social stability.

    Choose to live your passion

    Whatever your dream is, you can have it. The person you wish to be and the things you wish to achieve are within you. Make the choice to pursue those passions at whatever cost. It may mean clearing out your schedule or doing something you've never done. {#blank#}5{#/blank#}

A. Choose to spend time with those you love

B. Choose to organize your schedule flexibly

C. Make the choice today that you won't be ruled by them.

D. Neither extreme will lead you to a pleasant life for very long.

E. However, with re-evaluation and growth comes a beautiful freedom.

F. It's good to change, and you've only got so many years to refresh yourself.

    You can read a book for pleasure one time through and be just fine. However, it is harmful to deal with academic reading the same way. In order to read and comprehend a book or article for school, you need to be much more strategic(策略). {#blank#}1{#/blank#}

    Understand types and themes.

    In most reading tests, the student is asked to read a passage and predict what might happen next. {#blank#}2{#/blank#}This is to make sure you're able to infer information from the clues. The type of text of a book helps you make predictions about the action-which helps you.

    Read with tools.

    Any time you read to learn, use active reading skills and there are tools that are not so good to use. A pencil and a pack of sticky notes will be good tools. You can mark in the margins without any damage. Use your notes to write down thoughts, impressions, predictions, and questions as you read. {#blank#}3{#/blank#} You create some serious damage when highlighting.

    {#blank#}4{#/blank#}

    It is not wise to look up new and unfamiliar words as you read. Make a logbook of those new words, and revisit them later. Be sure to keep a logbook of new words and visit it often!

    Analyze the title (and subtitles).

    Once a text is completed, the writer may reflect on the true message or purpose and come up with a new title. {#blank#}5{#/blank#}

A. Find out the new words.

B. Work the vocabulary skills.

C. That is, if you want to earn a good grade!

D. A highlighter(荧光笔), on the other hand, can be a really bad tool.

E. What might happen next will help you a lot in reading.

F. Prediction is a common reading comprehension strategy.

G. It will be a clue to help you understand the message better.

    Although many Chinese students say that their knowledge of English grammar is good, most would admit that their spoken English is poor. Whenever I speak to a Chinese student, they always say, “My spoken English is poor.” {#blank#}1{#/blank#} I would like to suggest that there may be some reasons for their problems with spoken English.

    First, they fail to find suitable words to express themselves due to a limited vocabulary. {#blank#}2{#/blank#}However, you can speak with a limited vocabulary, if you choose a positive attitude. Others will follow you as long as you use the words that you know.

    {#blank#}3{#/blank#}Sometimes they make mistakes when they are speaking because they are shy and nervous. Yet students should remember that their goal should be FLUENCY NOT ACCURACY. Your aim in writing is to be accurate following the rules for grammar and using the right words and spelling them correctly. However, in speaking your aim is fluency. You want to get your message across, to talk to someone in English, as quickly and as well as you can, even though sometimes you may use a wrong word or tense, but it doesn't matter. {#blank#}4{#/blank#}

    The third reason is that not enough attention is paid to listening. You have one mouth but two ears! All that hearing is necessary for you to start speaking.

    Fourth, most Chinese students are reactive rather than proactive(主动的) language learners. Instead of actively seeking out opportunities to improve their spoken English they passively wait for speaking opportunities to come to them and wonder why their English always remains poor. {#blank#}5{#/blank#}

A. The person you are speaking to will understand you and make allowances for any mistakes he hears.

B. Obviously the better answer is to expand their vocabulary.

C. They may try to avoid making similar mistakes next time.

D. If you have this proactive outlook, then you will see English opportunities wherever you go.

E. Second, they are afraid of making mistakes.

F. However, their spoken English does not have to remain “poor”!

G. The second reason lies in the reluctance of using what has just been learned.

Home libraries can be a dynamic expression of the owner's personality. Creating a home library is a fun way to display your interests while establishing a special space for reading.

While there's no right or wrong way to design a library, the questions can be puzzling, especially to someone with hundreds or thousands of books. How do I organize?{#blank#}1{#/blank#} We'll discuss how to build a home library that works for you.

What room should I use for my home library?{#blank#}2{#/blank#} While reading in a room with big windows and lots of light is refreshing, storing books in natural light is harmful to them. Basements heavy with humidity (湿气) will cause mold (霉菌) and attract insects.{#blank#}3{#/blank#}

When you started using the public library, you probably learned about Melvil Dewey and his system for ordering libraries. The Dewey Decimal Classification System has ten broad categories for organizing books, including philosophy, religion and the arts.{#blank#}4{#/blank#} For example, when you want a book on modern art, you head to the 700th block. Larger libraries, such as those at universities, tend to use the Library of Congress Classification System, because it offers a more specific array of subjects for categorization, adding subjects such as medicine and law for a total of 21categories.

{#blank#}5{#/blank#} Your home library may or may not be as large as your local public library, but a good system of organization will still help you find the book you want quickly. You could take a page from Dewey and the Library of Congress and sort books by subject matter. Sections for subjects such as history, technology or fiction might make their retrieval (检索) easier. This system will also allow you to highlight a particular passion, such as an extensive collection of World War II history,

A. How do I get everything to fit?

B. Each category is assigned a number.

C. Almost everybody wants a home library.

D. A good system of organization is the key.

E. In addition, basements are likely to be flooded.

F. Almost any room will do with a few exceptions.

G. The size of a home library depends on how much space you can spare.
